YEE HAW!!!!

Just got my new notebook computer the other day. I needed something very portable, so I got a Fujitsu LifeBook P7010.

1Ghz processor
100 GB RAM
Weighs 3.3 pounds!!! (I could take it backpacking)
Enhanced display for viewing outside
Integrated dual-band Intel PRO wireless
Lots of multimedia ports
Fingerprint sensor (would be even cooler if I could figure out how to set it up)

At home I use a docking station with a monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse and since it is rather small.

Not bad at all for a laptop.

Better than most Desktops.

just got a new computer at work today...TT is much faster now ;)

this should probably go on the "You Know You're Addicted to TT" thread but I was more worried that I wouldn't be able to get on TT than any of my actual work applications ;)

Trashed my Desktop
I wanted another tool bar date & clock utility. Tried quite a few & discarded them. Eventually I stopped scanning the downloads & installed about 200 trojans that mimicked parts of my operating system & virus protection.

Eventually I just trashed my computer by accident. Couldn't get back on line & delved deeper & deeper into it's bowels. After I thoroughly trashed it, I found a loose data cord on my high speed modem.

Not very organized, so it took me days to find old installation discs & serial numbers. In the mean time I bought a (my 1st) laptop. Fast, lots of memory, big hard drive & dvd writer.etc. It's pretty decent & I like wireless. I do miss my trackball & liked it better then the finger slide, but everyone tells me I'll get used to it.

Thinking of going data cellular with it.

Cat, I love my Turbo mouse on the desktop so I got a smaller track ball to attach to my lap top. I could never stand the eraser tip mouse on some of the computers.

I really hate the "finger slide" cursor control on my backup notebook computer so I bought a hald held 'fellows' trackball. If it worked, it would be great but I had a great deal of difficulty getting the cursor to move at all. I really like trackballs over a mouse but not that one.

So today, I bought a wireless Targus presenter. Mostly for powerpoint presentations and the like, but it works great as a wireless trackball.

Even comes with a laser pointer. Never had one of those before. Wonder how my deer will like it?

I consider myself dangerously ignorant of most things computing. We now have an itty bitty laptop computer, which has a linux operating system. There's no owner's manual, just things you can read online. Oh, the joy. ;P

It's not so bad, but the downsized keyboard is definitely taking some getting used to.

I mostly plan to use it for journal entries, blogging, planning, et al.

I figure I've put the piedmont about 50 years backwards.

Actually they had a program where if you donated you could buy one.

It's a nifty little box but the OLPC is mismanaged nightmare of a project. I would rather pick one up on ebay that go through them again.

How much memory does it have HPM? Trying to find info about the computer at the site is a bit tricky. I've heard of the program on NPR and Birch and I were thinking it might be a nice little thing to pick up. Right now it's $400 for 2, one donated.

After my experience with the Give 1 Get 1 program I would NOT suggest going that route. It was super painful. I'd find one on ebay instead. Plus the G1G1 is over I think. They had a huge amount of problems with it.

Most specs can be found on the OLPC Wiki
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Hardware_specification

RAM: 256 MiB dynamic RAM; data rate: dual-DDR333-166Mhz;
It is not a performer by any measure and the software bears very little resemblance to most commercial software and you will have to hack it to run commercial software but it's a nifty little box for the inquisitive person and they EXPECT you to learn to hack it. That's part of the whole OLPC plan. Teaching kids to not just use computers but to teach themselves how to work on computers. You have to understand that it's designed as a learning tool for third world countries. If you don't you will be very disappointed.

The cool thing is that his has spurred the commercial box builders to build versions of the XO for the commercial market like the Asus EEE Pc. Most of the OLPC donor who got disillusioned by the G1G1 program went that route and I've heard good things about them. Those run about $300.

Just bought an Asus Netbook for $299. Very small and compact, 10" screen, 160GB HD, 11n wireless, 1gb ram...no disc drives period. I like it a lot, except for the right shift key.

Well, my daughter has succeeded in pulling off about half the keys from our laptop. Plus, it's 5+ years old, so it's time to breakdown and get a new one. Last one was a top of the line Dell Inspiron laptop, and it served us well. We want another laptop due to space constraints in our house and just the easy hide factor.

Any recommendations? I was intrigued by the Toshiba model where you can push a button and have a mirror screen on your HDTV, but I think you can buy this set-up for any computer, really.

I'd stick with Dell, or the IBM Thinkpad series - both are workhorses.

My Toshiba has been a very rugged little workhorse. I would buy another when the time comes.

rosey, if you've got a relatvely newer TV, it probably has a VGA input on the back... I tried an average piece of crap computer on mine and got perfect picture with just a little tweaking. I even cancelled my cable service and get any show I want to watch through itunes now...

I got a Dell laptop through my work and can't sing its praises loudly enough... great computer

It does. I think the VGA has limited resolution tho.

I will probably go back to Dell but try and find a way for wireless mirroring on my TV, or, I guess, pick up a cheap desktop and hide it in the cabinet to power the TV with a wireless keyboard/mouse. Hmmm...

Love my Thinkpad, although mine can convert to a tablet so it has a stylus-touch screen. That extra equipment makes the screen very hard to see outside so I wouldn't do that again.

Hate Dells.

Had two, wife had one for work. IT hated it for several reasons, one, network wouldn't connect. Her work went to Thinkpad.

FWIW.

Thanks for the input all. I ended up with a Toshiba. Best deal for a laptop with the new i7 chip, 500 gigs, 4 mb DDR3 ram, dedicated graphics card, 16" monitor and Windoze 7 OS...

you need to get a portable hard drive. Best investment i ever made. I interface and update every 2 days and with it I can connect to any laptop or PC and it will run like my own laptop. Tried the online storage and back up but to many files came back corrupt or hacked.

I keep a backup HDD, but also Carbonite. Having a backup disk won't do you any good if it is stolen with the computer or something like a fire destroys your house. Mozy is terrible. http://www.carbonite.com/
