Now if you are in Butler and looking for places to hike, south of you is the Monongahela National Forest, which is just about as close to Backpacker Heaven as you'll find in these parts. Face south.

North of you is the Allegheny National Forest, which I understand also has some nice hiking. Face north.

To the northeast are a number of state lands that have great hiking. Face Northeast.

East of you is the state capital, Hassleburg. Don't face that way.

If I was in Butler, I'd head south to the Mon. Dolly Sods is gorgeous. Otter Creek is relatively remote. Roaring Plains is fairly isolated and beautiful.

There are two sections of the Sods. The Wilderness area takes you down into a stream gorge. The northern part is a 4,000-foot high, four-mile wide plateau that offers open meadows, great expansive views, and highland bogs. There is a pretty well worn trail network of relatively easy trails. If you are good at land navigation, you should have no trouble.

Usually you can see about where you are on the upper Sods whenever you get to a meadow.

No point in that happening. Take the interstate (I-79 I think) down to Morgantown and I-68 east to US 219. Take that south to Thomas, WV, and then take WV 32 south through Davis. Stay on 32 past Canaan Valley State Park, and you will see a sign pointing left to Dolly Sods. This will eventually become a gravel Forest Service Road (FS 19) that will connect to FS 75 on top of the plateau. Continue on FS 75. There is a parking area just north of the Red Creek Campground (fee) for trails out to connect to the wilderness area, or continue across the Sods to the western ridge (Cabin Mountain). you can also continue on FS 75 to Bear Rocks. A quarter mile south of Bear Rocks is another trail out onto the Sods. You can put together a circuit hike from that point.

TT people are good people, despite the BS that goes on here. Depending on how far you want to travel, it is a good way to meet people and learn about different areas.

I am wandering home to catch a nap before I head out to review a play. It is considered gauche to review a play you slept through.

TTer's are good peeps and I've had a lot of fun on the trips. I haven't made it down to hike in PA yet, so I can't comment on any of the locations there. Hopefully I'll be able to change that eventually.

Pennsylvania is a goldmine when it comes to backpacking. there are more trails in this state than any state east of the Rockies and we have more trail miles than most of those states. So if you like backpacking you are in a good place. the central location of Pennsylvania also gets you in good proximity to the rest of the Appalachian Mountains. You can go north or south and get in a lot of great hikes. The smokies are just as close as the Whites!

Happy trails!
