This morning I decided to split up a HUGE piece of fat lighter my Dad brought up sometime during the summer. Winter will be here soon and a fire every now and then makes the house feel great. Every year I forget until I start to split a big chunk of lighter how good it smells..it always feels like fall with the first whack.

what is a "fat lighter?"

I love my wood stove.

twig - It's what we Southerners call the remains of an old pine stump, still filled with resin. You chop off splinters and they light very easy and burn hot from all the pine resin. You use them to 'light' your fires. That's why they are called 'lighter'.

Hee hee hee - I noticed you never responded to my explanation of my hee hee hee...nevermind on the Feeling Sickly thread. LOL

Ah...and we don't burn pine up north cause it's soft wood...course, I be using my wood stove as my only source of heat and not thinking "lighter"

We don't burn pine either, just a splinter of lighter to start them.

Apparently smell is the key sense for triggering memories.

Last year in Daytona I picked up 5 boxes of those starter logs for $5 each. Who needs "fat" lighter? :D

You can't whapp someone up side the head with a 'starter log' like you can with a lighter knot.

I just split up a piece of hard wood for starter, but the pine thingy sounds (and smells) much better.

salt pork, yumminy...

Speaking of memories and smells, I'm making a boiled dinner this weekend...my house will smell wonderful...

I've found pizza boxes work great for getting the fire going.

Carlette, I have several boxes of that stuff--it's packaged and sold under the name "Fatwood." It's an awesome firestarter.....so much resin in it the smoke is black.

Ahah! LLB sells "Georgia fatwood" I always wondered why anyone would buy such a little bundle of wood for the price and what was so great about it - now I know!

It is highpriced stuff. Plus then I'd miss the splitting it myself. Pine sucks in large pieces for burning b/c of that black soot..uggg.

Twig you gotta try some lightar'd

for carlette
fall and the senses...

the hill i ascended, on a rock i did rest
i looked oer the valley below
my senses alive, the vision before me
the loveliness of a fine autumn show

billowy clouds, drifting above
as bright and white as your smile
the wings of a hawk like the grace of your hand
i surrendered my thoughts to this wile

the colorful leaves, the gold like your hair
shades of red like the blush of your cheek
framed in a sky, the truest of blue
the beauty is now at its peak

the leaves will fall, days become ever short
but it takes not away from my heart
the flutter that rose, the joy i received
in this experience of which i impart
