Okay, if you don't have an international sim card thingy you can't place international calls...but, can you receive international calls?

yep, you don't need a sim card to make international calls, you just need to tell your cell company to allow international calls.

possibly, depends on the phone firm, but it was one call I made four years ago, so I could be wrong. It was sprint that needed it.

same with cingular. I receive phone calls from Germany all the time on my cell. If I want to call Germany I need to call cingular and the pull a switch. I guess they set it up so you can.

way too expensive! I buy a calling card and call to germany from my cell if I need too. Much cheaper...even it still does use your minutes on your cell.

Verizon runs a credit check and puts on an international dialing feature (if you pass). They also have an international long distance plan --- 3.99/month and the per minute rate is less.

I have never had to have anything turned on to make or receive an international call. However I had to call and get on a international plan so it would not cost to much.

The difference is if you want to use your call while out of the states. If your phone isn't the right kind it doesn't matter what plan you are on it will not work.

So, I broke my cell phone - I can still make calls just fine, but I have no idea who I'm calling because I can't see the screen. I have an audiovox flip phone, the main screen only shows up white, can't see anything.

Has anybody had this problem before? Is it something I can get fixed, or is my phone shot?

Shot. Once the screen is gone its most likely shot. Unless you have the right tools to open up your cell phone and see if a wire has become detached.

Yeah, the phone is shot. This happened to my son's phone. He contacted the company and they sent him a new phone for free, along with a pre-paid package label to send back the broken phone.

might work if my phone was still under warranty... unless there's some secret I don't know about.

Call them anyway! You just never know. It's worth a shot.

Is your contract up for renewal or lapsed to month-to-month? They might send you a new one free if you re-up for a one or two years service agreement.

I think I'm due for a new phone in September... that's a long time to wait.

Well like Creek Dancer says, call 'em anyways. They might be nice and cut a deal. You can't lose for asking.

I like my Blackberry, but it doesn't bounce well. It seems like that thing is always hitting the concrete.

simer, my Nokia does the same thing from time to time. I try turning it off then on and sometimes I do the Arthur Fonzerelli trick, I drop it. It works too.

Simer, if you are with Cingular give them a call. My phone died last summer and when I called they offered to send me a reconditioned phone from their warranty/insurance division for $75. Even though it was an older phone its most important feature isn't in modern phones, so I bit and took their offer. Might have helped that I have been a customer since 1993, but it still can't hurt to ask.

Good time to get a PDA. I'm sorely tempted but no broadband access in the boonies. (SLOWWW) I do miss my old 3w bag (cell) & Sat phone though. I tried to call "the boss" with my little handy-dandy cell from a peak and got NADA. She gets a 'might' testy when I don't-want-to-come-out-of-the-woods 'just yet' syndrome. Those fraction-of-a-watt cells just don't cut it, even with all the new cell towers going up everywhere.

I'm thinking about getting rid of my cell phone. I don't use it that often and it doesn't even get a signal when I'm at home unless I stand by my mailbox. If my phone dies, I've already decided not to replace it.

Back in the old days, there was no display of the number you were calling. You found out whether you got the right number of not when somebody answered.

catskhiker, if you must get connected in marginal areas, check if your phone has an antenna port (usually at the base of the built-in antenna, under a rubber plug). With the setup I bought for my phone a few years ago I can improve my reception by about 20 dB. Not something you can take up on the mountain easily, but still possible if you must.

My source for multi-directional, yagi, and planar cell antennas (and adapters for various phones): http://www.criterioncellular.com/home2.html

if you're with cingular, they have treo's for $129 on their website. They are refurbished, but still look like new.

I love my treo...never gonna go back to a normal phone again.

Hey lumberzack!! I called you the other day by mistake. heeehee...did you see a strange number on your phone? I transfered all my numbers to the other phone and by mistake typed a few.

How long ago was that? I do remember getting a strange number a little over a month ago, but I figured it was the drunk people calling me again.

why do drunk people call you?

Looking for rides. I've had a few drunken messages left in my voice mail left by people I don't know looking for a ride home. I don't know how they got my number. All I can figure out is they dialed it wrong.
