Well in the other Washington some crazy just tried to attack me while i was walking the dog. He was muttering something about George Bush as he walked toward me. When I was about ten yards away he lent into a garden and picked up a rock. Uh oh, so I skirt to the far side of the path, keeping my front to him. As he passes he lunges and swings a punch. Luckily he's off his face on something, and I lean back out of the way without too much difficulty. My faithful hound theb sinks his teeth into the assailant and I push him - he stumbles backwards. Good boy Diesel! He then backs off about ten yards, goes to pick up another rock. Said faithful hound is going crazy at this point, and he keeps shouting: "Let him go," and "I'll f*cking kill you man," -(bravely I thought as he slowly backed further off).
He's taking off his backpack at this stage and I decide I don't really want to know what he might have in there. So I back off myself. Being one of the most heavily policed parts of the country, (three blocks from the Capitol building) I flag down a cop on the next block, and give him a description, and he goes off to look for him.
Arrive home and give diesel his normal dinner and some cheese and a pigs ear for being a hero.

Well it livened up my nightly walk anyway - though I'd prefer some snow.

Thanks! It was taken on the way to Mt. Baring, 10-29-05. Have you been up there? The other shot was taken at Stevens Pass on 11-06-05.

I haven't been up Baring. In fact, hikes along Highway 2 are rare for me. That picture is really cool how it seems to "pop" off the screen.

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington is removing the $5 day-use parking fee from its 120 state parks. The much-maligned fee had caused park attendance to plummet during the past three years since it was imposed.

Gov. Chris Gregoire signed the repeal bill on Monday, and state parks Director Rex Derr announced that rangers will no longer ask that day users pay the fee.

Repeal isn't official until March 31, when the governor signs a new state budget that also includes a ban on the day-use fees. The repeal bill itself takes effect April 9.

But as a practical matter, the fee is gone, and Derr said, "We want people back."

I suspect it often cost more to collect the fees than the fees generated.

The voluntary fee sites are another joke.

A better way of getting money at these sites is to install pay as you use restroom facilities.

Facilities in general including roads and parking could well be minimized on public lands and the lands will by and large will take care of themselves at low expense.

I don't know why it bugged me so much, but after they passed the law back 3 years ago, I was so irate over the fee I quit going to state parks-making it even worse is that in S. King County, the best beach access is via state parks. Thing is I buy the NP pass, the Northwest parking pass, the Fish & Wildlife for Eastern Wa, blahblahblah...but dang, I was mad..maybe it was because when the law went into effect, I lived on Whidbey Island-and there is 6 state parks within minutes! And another 6 or so within an hours drive.
I was always so proud of the town of Port Townsend, they paid the "parking fee" every year, so anyone could come to the state park in the town.
Now that it is gone (ok, another week or so) I will go back to state parks. There is one 2 miles from where I work.
State parks here, we have so many-they are like county parks anywhere else! Many are in urban areas! They should be free! The NF and NP's? I don't mind paying for them.
