I am trying to get information about an X-Box game that Tucker has been playing (not here at home). He pronounces it Metrassault, although I suspect that he could be misreading the title. Anyone have any idea what he might be referring to?

With Christmas upon us I have a question... considering my knowledge of video games amounts to Donkey Kong on the original nintendo. My 6y/o is having a fit for a video game/console whatever, from Santa. I have resisted the urge since I felt it was better she not become absorbed in video games. Upon reflection it dawned on me I can duhh, be the parent and restrict usage to certain times etc etc. So my question is...whats the "thing" in video games...sony, xbox, ninetendo..its all greek to me now. I personally miss the days of pumping a quarter into a pacman machine and hearing waka waka waka waka.

The basic skinny on video games is that the Xbox is a faster machine but costs more and there aren’t as many games out for it. The Playstation2 is not as fast as the Xbox but it is cheaper ($145) and there are literally thousands of games out for it and the games are a lot cheaper. Plus you can play Playstation1 games on it. The next generation consoles are coming out within the next year. They are unbelievably awesome but they will run about $300-$400 and the games will be slow to come out and the new games will be topping $60 a pop. For a 6 year old I’d say the Playstation2 would be all they would need for at least 5 years.

For info on games you can check Gamespot.com. They have really good reviews and they detail the content. Plus all games are rated so you can look at the game box and know what’s in it.

Cool..thanks Nigal.

I'll admit when the XBox came out I watched while someone played a game I can't remember the name..but it was army like..these guys all dressed in black manuevering thru-out warehouses etc trying to get something. Very violent and not meant for kk...but definantely something I'd wanna play. Looked so real..I was amazed.

The XBox is an awesome console but the games are mostely what you saw. They have a lot of first person shooter games but not much for the small kids.

Carlette, I have a PS2, and I second Nigal's take on the difference. I would go with the PS2. Purely for the game selection. If you like games like the one you mentioned, check out Socom US Navy Seals. It's really cool. The third one just came out, but the first two were very popular.
Once a game sells 400,000, it is given a greatest hits designation. They repackage it with the greatest hits wording and sell it usually for $20.00. A lot of kids games make this list. (Ratchet and Clank, JAK) And a bunch of teen and adult games get there too. Many stores have a section just for those games. $20 for a brand new game is a good deal. L
ook for a place in your area that sells used games. If your daughter doesn't like a game, or gets sick of it after a while you can trade it for another game. You will not get back the price you paid, but it's better than nothing.
Gamefly.com is a video game rental place that is similar to Netflicks. They also have used games.

Girl Has Seizure After 5 Hours Of Video Gaming
Doctor Says Long-Term Video Game Playing Is Likely Cause

POSTED: 10:34 am EST December 9, 2005
DES MOINES, Iowa -- A central Iowa mother woke up over the weekend to find her daughter having a seizure.

After a trip to the emergency room, a family learned that the cause was most likely from playing video games too long, Des Moines television station KCCI reported.

Doctors said such incidents are not common, but they do happen. Certain people are prone to it because of the way their brains work. Once was enough for 14-year-old Amy Kopaska.

She loves to play video games, the station reported. She spent five hours straight playing a video game over the weekend. Her marathon session led to a frightening situation.

"This has never happened before. Boy, it scared the life out of me," said Janell Hansen, Kopaska's mother.

Hansen woke up early Sunday and heard an awful noise from her daughter's room. She found her daughter thrashing on her bed.

"I rolled her over. Her eyes were dilated. She was foaming at the mouth, gasping for air. Just breathing very hard," Hansen said.

Hansen said that at one point it appeared her daughter had quit breathing all together.

"Then it was quiet. She didn't move. I thought I was watching her die. It scared me terribly," Hansen said.

Hansen gave Kopaska a couple of big breaths as she waited for the paramedics. At the hospital, after several tests and questions, the conclusion was that the long-term use of the video game induced the seizure.

"The pattern of the lights sets up an abnormal reaction in the brain, and that causes the seizure to happen," said Dr. Joel Waymire, a pediatrician.

Kopaska doesn't remember anything about the seizure.

"My mind is a blank, like dreaming without the dream," she said.

Kopaska was playing the game called "True Crime: New York City." There's a car driving through snow and the snowflakes act as a strobe light.

Kopaska's brother played, too, but he took a break when it was her turn. She stayed and watched him play.

Kopaska now only plays one to two hours at a time and then takes a break.

December 14, 2005 | Issue 41•50

I’ll tell ya what, I really can’t decide what the saddest part is about this video.

Is it?
A) the fact that some World Of Warcraft players actually held a funeral for a character that died?
B) the fact some guild (Serenity Now) decided to crash it and dust the whole funeral precession line?
C) is how pissed of everyone was and the reaction to Serenity Now for doing it?

It's actually so funny and yet so darn shameful it brings out the lee in me.

Just sad man…

I see there is quite a debate going on over that video in the WoW universe. Some people say these guys are jerks, others say "real life" memorials have no place in a virtual world intended to be a fun place. Apparenlty, this memorial was held in "hostile" location in the game.

The only game I have time to play is SOCOM III on the PS2. You have to have a ton of free time to play these WoW (World of Warcraft)games.

That's what I was wondering. I mean, do you pay someone to watch for this kind of stuff 24/7 so you can keep in the loop? It seems way weird to me. In fact, I'm spending too much time online w/ TT now. Time to get to bed and back to "real life". Yes you WoW people, that means a real person snuggling up to another real person. Woah, imagine that.

I've got it on tape, I just can't find it.

Online gaming is a pastime like any other and can absorb just as much time as you let it. Same as any other pastime the level of participation is as unique as the people who participate. Don't assume that everyone who enjoys online gaming has no life or is completely wrapped up in online drama.

Some folks meet their friends at the bar, some meet them online. WoW, TT- same difference.

I find it ironic someone participating in an online venue where you interact with other users would look down their nose at someone else for participating in an online venue where you interact with other users.

"That was not a memorial for an ingame character.

Right, sorry for the confusion. They brought it on themselves because they posted it on the main boards and then had it in an area that was wide open for this type of thing to happen. But ya know what, it still doesn't make it any less funny. LOL!

WoW is an awesome game which is exactly why I DON'T buy it. Champions of Norath, Bulder's Gate Dark Aliance, and GranTurismo 4 keep me busy enough. And to top that off Onimusha 4 is coming out this month. I think TT is about to take a backseat for awhile.

I'm sorry if I came off that way. I'm the last person to put down people playing games. My point was that to be "good" at WoW, and other such games, you have got to be dedicated and commit hours upon hours to build up your characters and stuff. I'm married, work full time, am a live music freak, and try to hike as much as possible, so I just don't have the time to accomplish much on a game like that. Not that my "hobbies" are any better or "cooler" than theirs anyway.

I play SOCOM III on the PS2 for about 3 hours every Tuesday Night if I can. I have a little group of virtua-friends that try and meet up at the same time every week. But, it's not the type of game where you really improve on your character at all, you just get better at playing with the default character.

Anyway, I haven't been on here long, and I didn't want to come off as jerk. This site has been very helpful to me.

One of my kids is on WOW. I have to limit his time. tell ya...everytime I tell him he's done for today...woah...better take cover. I def. find his attitude to be different. He learned to hide his moods because everytime he does get angry, I'll just ground him of it completely for a couple days.

The other one is on Runescape. He's grounded of it now for over 2 month already. I enjoy him sitting with me, actually talking to me and even going grocery shopping with me.

I may have to ground him of that damn game more often.

Point is, those games def. effect a person. If someone tells you different they prolly playing too and are in denial.

is that what you guys were talking about?? I didn't check the link...

Naw, that was wasn't pointed at you, So Il. It was pointed at Hubcaps snide insinuation that people who play online games have nothing going on in real life.

Gem, one problem with online games is that with many of them you can't just quit and save your place in the game. If you are in a particular task or section if you quit during the task you have to start the task over and that sucks because some of the tasks can't be done quickly. Most likely your son is getting pissed because he's deep into getting something done online and now all that effort is getting cut off at the knees.

I have two beefs with online games.
1. The lack of the ability to choose any quitting point in many games makes it hard to just pop in for a quick session and pop right back out.
2. The difficulty of soloing all the tasks. Frankly, I'm not all that inerested in always group gaming online and many of them force you to group in order to get anywhere.
