I'm considering a mountaineering class with NOLS. Has anyone else partaken one of these courses? What was your impression. What about other instructional opportunities that are cheaper. Is it worth paying the price for the best?

Of course, if I sign up for one of these, I'll have to put my Glacier trip off until 2007. Hmm.

Search NOLS and you'll find several threads on the subject and a link to another thread on the subject.

NOLS has a good reputation for safety and rescue training.

I am not much on "group" camping or hiking experiences, so the training process was/is stressful for me.

They know their stuff.

Our son's friend who climbed Whitney with us took a NOLS course soon after high school graduation. He loved it, and I respect his opinions. He's a smart kid.

robertr - I'm a NOLS Grad, I encourage you to take a course if it's something that you're really interested in.

I'd be more than happy to answer any general questions that you have about NOLS.

I just got my acceptance letter to the NOLS Instructor course.

That's a big deal for me, a big step towards a future of some sort, where this will lead, I don't know - but the Idea of getting paid to go backpacking in Patagonia sounds like a hell of a plan.

Wyoming here I come!

I'm heading out today for my instructor course, I'm giving myself 3 days to get there, I have to be at a meeting on Wednesday evening.

I'm looking forward to hitting the trail and learning everything I can while I'm out there!

So, not that I show my face around here much - but I'll be gone for at least the next 6 weeks, I'll be back to let you know how it all went.

I was just at the State Parks Bathhouse in Thermopolis yesterday - work related stuff for the Parks Dept.

Wyoming looks as green right now as it ever has - plush almost.

Maybe I'll run into you(and your class) in the Winds - we'll be up around Big Sandy the weekend after next teaching some Scouts snow climbing-ice axe stuff.

Have fun.

so far, it's cool - I'm enjoying it. I expected this part to be a lot more intense than "you have the rest of the day free after lunch" Well, it's not quite like that, but it is a lot less stressful than I imagined. Tomorrow we head out for a 20 day backpacking trip in the wind rivers, followed by a 12 day climbing base camp at split rock, looking forward to it. Right now I'm just enjoying some relaxation time in the hotel room.

I will be on a NOLS course in September Crash. If you want I can tell you how it was when I am back from it. But I guess there should be some people around who already have been on one.
I too would love to hear about their experience.

simer just did one - he had very favorable comments about it. now he's off doing some long term thing in Alaska (i think) that came out of the NOLS thing somehow. I've never heard anybody say that wished they hadn't done a NOLS experience.
