High school football

“You have to love the wacky world of high school playoffs. Today -- second weekend in November -- there was a game delay because of a thunderstorm and lightning. LOL!

The good news:

Next stop for the Lanesboro Burros 9-man football team: State semi-finals next Saturday at the MetroDome. I should be getting a press pass to shoot it from the field.

Lanesboro is one of Outside Mag's "Top 20" small outdoor town getaways. The team whipped their opponent (probably awed by the football field on the banks of the Root River... and the magnificent bluffs ringing the town)

The bad news:

“Our local high school football team is still undefeated through the second round of the play offs. We have gone to the last two games, and they have provided more excitement than the Chicago Bears. Of course, that ain't saying much.”

My son is a sophmore and his second season of JV football. Last year our team went 10-0 and won our conference. However, last night we lost our first game. :-(

“Well, the game was a blast! We thought it was going to get rained out due to the afternoon storms but the weather cleared and it was actually very nice.

Eric's gf made me a tshirt with his name and number on it! (I was just a bit proud!) When we got there I was able to watch them all walk on the field together. What an awesome sight!!!! They were so pumped!!!

He was on the field for the kick off but then didn't go out again until last qtr. Was all cool...he will play more. He played offensive line. We won 29-0!!!

The hubby said "guess you had more fun without me there". My reply was "well, I would say I had more fun but you wouldn't have been happy if you were there...I HAD A BLAST!"”

Mebbe non-Floridians, too. And Texans. And Californians.... I will admittedly reckon.

Valdosta High School, GA, owns the winningest record of ALL high school sports in America with it's football program. Never forget that.

Hilliard Davidson senior Kyle Garchar masterminded the trick at Crew Stadium and suffered an in-school suspension for it.

Garchar, 17, even produced a videotape for YouTube. The video had been viewed more than 3,400 times as of last night.

He had survived surgery for a brain tumor, a stroke, and learned to walk again. He graduated with honors and went on to attend NC State. The developer of the project is Jim Anthony....owner of LOTS of properties in Upstate of SC and NC called The Cliffs. It just boils my blood to think of him...how many more acres is he going to destroy?????? OK...I don't have to go into it all....the short answer is yes.

“Last night was perfect out, but I didn't go to any games. Watched "Remember the Titans" on TV instead, lol. Great movie!

OK, I admit it. I wanna watch winning teams!! In Decorah, Iowa they surely had that, with back-to-back state titles in the late 80s. Ahhh, memories. And many state football trips.

Around here, Lanesboro went to state two years ago, to the quarter-final, playing in the metro-dome. This year all their big guns have graduated. But, as our sportswriter pointed out, last year they had such blow-out scores that the non-starters/underclassmen were playing good half games, at least, most weeks.

If I really wanna see good, I should go to Rushford-Peterson, on down the Root River. They won the title last year. And after having their town devastated by flooding mid-August (nearly all downtown businesses destroyed in a small town of 1,600 - and all the emergency response volunteer teams from across the country there. Still feeding 2,000 meals a day prepared by volunteers in the church hall) -- well, they had their home opener last night. The football field was on high enougn ground it got little flooding when the creek flash flooded over its levies.

(And to further explain the problem, raw sewage from the sewage plant, pesticides just arrived at a local co-op and other goodies got into the flash flood water mix that the Root River levy then HELD IN the town, especially the downtown area.)

Now the town is showing the same spirit as their year-in, year-out winning football program: picking itself up and starting the recovery process. They've been called a model for post-catastrophe recovery. (Now they just need the state Repub gov. and the house/senate Dems to stop bickering and putting political agenda in front of getting a special session to get some cash aid in there NOW! Yesterday the gov. announced a $30 M package from other programs. A $100 M package has been called for... so still will need some action from legislature, likely in a special session)

The R-P team won their first game of the year. Hope they won last night. Those boys got good, hard work doing flood clean-up and the continuing work.

Cougars, Rams eye MAC title

ASHEVILLE- No more lip service about respecting every opponent equally.

The tension from months and months of buildup can finally be released tonight when Roberson comes calling at Asheville High.

Kickoff for a game that could ultimately decide the next Mountain Athletic Conference champion is set for 7:30 p.m.

"Win or lose, we've got to play again next week and the week after that," Cougars coach Danny Wilkins said. "But this is a biggie."

The Rams (6-0, 2-0) appear to have every thing a football team could want - one of only two perfect records in Western North Carolina, a No. 1 ranking in the Citizen-Times Best of the West poll, a stout defense with three shutouts under its belt and an All-WNC running back in senior Justin Wynn (881 yards, 11 touchdowns).

But the Rams have never won at Asheville (4-1, 1-0) in seven tries. And the two-time defending MAC champion Cougars own a commanding 12-4 lead in the overall series.

"We are excited to be where we're at," Roberson coach Jim Beatty said. "We have so much at stake, playing against Asheville. I talked about it at the beginning of the year. We have to go through Asheville to win the conference. It's just a huge game with two real good teams going at it for possibly the MAC title."

Another All-WNC player involved in tonight's game may be the best all-around athlete on the field. Cougars senior quarterback/cornerback Rahkeem Morgan (571 passing yards, 359 rushing yards and 13 combined touchdowns) is also the only Buncombe County player with a Division I-A scholarship offer (Marshall University).

In addition to his athletic gifts, Morgan still carries vivid memories of last year's 35-13 loss in Skyland. It signified Asheville's only MAC loss.

"They pretty much embarrassed us, and we didn't play well either," Morgan said. "We need to make a statement this year. We need to play hard for four quarters and make plays. We're excited that this game is at home in front of our fans."

A Roberson defense that starts 10 seniors is led by safety Josh Gossett (54 tackles) and defensive end Kersey Young (37.5). Likewise, the Cougars rely on senior linebackers Phillip Lamy (49.5 tackles) and Antonio Carson (37.5).”

On the way out of Robbinsville, you get to a "T" intersection and on the light pole across the intersection there was a sign that read:

"Last one out of town, turn out the lights"
