“My mom makes sub sandwiches at WalMart for a living. She works nights so they will be ready the next day. It's a full time job. She gets a discount card which she lives on… buys everything 10% below what they cost at WalMart). She gets health benefits, and can purchase WalMart stock at a discount. She has worked there for many years and is going to be going to management training classes. Prior to this job she "job hopped" below the poverty line. After the job she seems to be doing very well. A lot of people demonize WalMart but I think it's because they are such a big and easy target. I would not be shocked if they deserved a lot of the criticism they get, but I don’t think it’s as bad as some would paint to be.”

1) There many sides and views to anything as big as this issue;
2) Yes, there are issues more important than today's economy, but we can only handle them having strong economy;
3) None of us likes it, none of us wants to be a victim, but what we call greed and cruelty was always one of the major sources (if not the major source) of the overall economy success;
4) Millions of people cannot afford an alternative to Wal-Mart;
5) Would Wal-Mart go away, prices everywhere else will go up;
6) Many more points to either side ...

Wal-mart has eroded workers rights and pay throughout retail. I support retailers that treat my neighbors as human beings, not troublesome elements of production.

I hate buying items made in China.

Some of their food prices are cheaper than Krogers some isn't. Last night I bought food at both places.”

“Locally there is a scam where the local grocery stores charge $3-$3.50 for a gallon of milk. I can get a gallon of milk at Wal Mart or Sams for $1.98 a gallon. My kids drink milk constantly. It got so bad that they did a study to determine if the grocery stores were engaged in price fixing. The claim is that they did an investigation and found this was not the case. They may not have directly fixed prices but if competition was in place I see no reason why their milk should be $1-$1.50 more per gallon that Sams or WalMart. Milk I buy in Wisconsin is more to the WalMart/Sams end of cost rather than in Chicago where it's absurd.

So I get Milk at WalMart or CostCo (turns out CostCo is about the same price) and most everything else at Cost Co or my local grocery store.

“Well, HPM, I guess you'd have to do your own research into what is virtuous for you. Personally, I shop and mom & pop shops (you know, the small business that actually pay taxes, pay thier employees well, etc) and union stores as much as possible. If I absolutely have to shop at a big box, and can't find the item I need at a mom and pop, I wait until they offer the product as a loss leader, so they don't profit off me.

HPM - Check out that Wal-Mart flick. You'll see how much the products you buy at WalMart actually cost you.
