Time for a cashless society
I would say that 90% of law inforcement problems could be reduced by a national ID system. The first thing would be eliminate all cash. Set a date where all paper money expires. Assign every legal citizen a national ID card or chip. Encode on the card a finger print and iris scan. Put pint readers or iris scanners at Walmart and other places of business for employee pay and customer purchases. No chip, no pay, no purchase. We don't need to build a concrete and steel fence to keep out illegals. An electonic fence will do just as well. Most drug related activity would also be stopped in its tracks without cash. I use maybe $100 to $200 dollars a month in cash. I wouldn't miss it at all.

Exactly Bearmagnet. ID fraud is likely to be a crime many of us will be a victim to. A national ID system would nock ID fraud in the Azz. Even a DNA fingerprint could be used for better identification. Right now we are wide open to fraud.

Imagine how nice the checkouts at Walmart would be in a cashless line. It is like comparing cash toll booths to electronic toll gates. One you wait for people to make change and the other you don't even hit the brakes.

Think of it as an Ipod for living. Remember when you had to carry a trunk sized case to carry all your 8 tracks? Now an Ipod can store your entire collection on a postage stamp sized chip. Tech good!

Come on folks the NSA already taps your phone and computer. The era of privacy is over. You are already a number that has been calculated and classified. We should at least enjoy some of the benifits and convience of the electronic age. Imagine how easy it would be to find lost hikers if their chip had a GPS tracker.

The fight is over guys and the honest people lost. The only ones that have to gain by cash today are those that fly below radar. You pay taxes and are exposed to undue danger because the people are able to commerce freely in society. The taxes alone are worth the cost of the system. Every grass cutter, wood chopper and drug pusher would be paying the same tax as the rest of us. Imagine who easy filing your 1040 would be.

I've found often when I use my debit card instead of cash, it actually take longer. The card almost never scans correctly on the first try, and then you have to wait for the computer as it asks you twenty questions. Sometime cash is just easier.

What about the employers who broke the law in hiring them?
Without the promise of jobs I reckon the illegals would have little or no reason to also break the law.”

Lumberzac most of the items in your cart have electronic tags already. Don't believe me just try shoplifing without removing it. One could simply push their enire cart through the scanner without removing any items. The system can be built.

Actually folks, I don't really look forward to those things I just posted. I was just kicking the can. See now nobody is fighting! You are all posting how bad you think my idea is. Personally if I could go back 100 years and live my life I gladly would. Unfortunately we are stuck in this world we live in. My true thoughts are: Send illegals home, fine the heck out of the employers first offense, jail the employers second offense, shop at walmart if you want to I find it a herd scene and would rather avoid it, cash is an easy way to conduct business legally and especially illegally.

I'm not taking about scanning the items. I'm taking about scanning the card to pay for the items. You want to be able to view how much you’re spending.

Driving through a tollbooth is a lot different that buying your groceries. A toll is pretty much a set price that only changes every few years. The price of goods often changes day to day. Sometimes the computers are updated to match the new price. Have you ever been over charged for something? I do at least once every few months.

I don't buy that crap, Ewker.

Those guys don't go through the crap they go through without the expectation of jobs.

The employers are NOT being prosecuted.
THAT is the root of the problem.

There may well be "brokers" to whom employers put out the word that they need workers.

At the very least illegals send word to their muchachos that so-and-so is hiring.

bateaux, there would be no need for a 1040. Just make a national sales tax especially now that all monetary transactions will be recorded in Washington.

A Bagboy's Revenge.
I'm at the age where I can have fun. When the checkout line is long, I do the "old man coin shuffle." I get out a fist-full of coins and count and recount them with a lot of deliberation. Then I drop some of them on the floor. That is always worth another five minute delay. Finally, I wind up just a little short of the amount due. So then, it is time for the checkbook. You should see how mad some of these waiting people can become.

Screw that idea! I paid my taxes, while I was working. Now that I owe no tax each year, you want me to pay part of your share by a national sales tax. You know where you can file that idea.

I have an older friend who goes to Wal Mart during the WEEKEND SHOPPING CRUNCH. He sets all the alarms to 5 minute intervals, sets off all the noisy games. And then "adds toys" to random carts with kids.

Says it is the most fun he can have for an afternoon.

dammit NS, now stop your bickering. While we're shoving that chip in your brain, scanning your eye and getting a record of your DNA, we'll just take a few extra minutes to rewire your brain so that you will be chomping at the bit to do your part by paying a national sales tax.

Well true of the matter is Bateauxdriver is dead right about what he posted about electronic banking.

I work in that industry, all those things are coming very soon or are already here. It's simply a case of market implementation and customer adoption.

Walmart already requires all products to contain RFIDs or they won't sell them.

MarkO, personally I don't care whether you buy it or not, it is happeneing.

I agree the companies need to be busted for hiring illegals. That much we agree upon. If the comapnies were busted it would stop some not all illegals.
Think how many cross the border so their wife can drop a baby on American soil. The way it is written now the baby is an American citizen, that is up for change in Congress and I hope it happens

Well if we go to the screwed up system they are proposing for immigration we WILL get national ID cards. How the hell will they tell the friendlies from the illegals otherwise?

A national electronic ID card system would lead to a loss of rights.

Generic drugs getting cheaper at Wal-Mart Link from CNN.
Wal-Mart to Offer $4 Generic Prescriptions Link from The New York Times(may require a sign-in).

"Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, said it would begin selling generic versions of widely prescribed drugs to its workers and customers at sharply reduced prices, a move that could force rival pharmacies to do the same."
