I guess California is enacting a law (or trying to enact it at least) that will require all food establishments to list the calorie count for each meal on its menu... might be a little overboard, but hell, I can't imagine it hurting anyone

Yeah, lets put calorie counts on the menu because hell, we already have so many health inspectors just sitting around with nothing to do. Now they get to add calibrating accurate calorie counts for every push cart hot dog stand they can find.

What would be fair would to follow junk food advertising with public service messages informing consumers exactly how bad the junk food is.

But then, life is not fair and making money is the prime directive............all other considerations are secondary.
MarkO

I wouldn't even call all other considerations secondary, I'd say they don't exist at all. Any illusion of a secondary consideration is just some sort of marketing or PR ploy

Don't you get it hyway? Slick marketing backed by the uncontrollable desire to make piles of money FORCE people to think that Ding Dongs and Twinkies and Quarter Pounders with Cheese are healthy and fashionable and will make them popular.

Oh---except for MarkO; he's one of the only people in the country who can think for himself.

“sorry, I understand being "big boned" or having a glandular thing, but there's a big difference between that and just being lazy and fat. There's no reason a 10 year old kid should weigh 200+ lbs except poor parenting, and these obese parents with obese kids filing into Wal Mart are, at the least, not adding to the company's image”

Examine the link between poverty and obesity Pepsi. This is what I find the most irksome about people that slam Walmart. They claim to be for "the little guy", "the working family" and "American workers" but then turn right around and show disrespect and utter disdain for the people they see at Walmart. Guess what, the people who are shopping at Walmart are the exact same people they claim to "be for".

People shop at Walmart to save money so it stands to reason that a lot of the people there would be below the poverty line. Buying cheap food means buying over processed food which packs weight on like nobody's business.

In MarkO's case...I am just guessing here but

. Headbands/Ponytails
Your hair accessory may be giving you a headache, no matter how cute the headband or hair elastic. Tight hats will cause a similar sensation as well. Dr. Schlesinger explains, “Tight headbands and/or ponytails may cause headaches because the tissue under your scalp muscles have nerve fibers, which may become irritated by tight headbands and ponytails.”

I stopped at a Walmart somewhere on I-20 just east of Atlanta this past weekend. Every single person I saw working and shopping in that store was black (my daughter says she saw 2 white folk shopping in the electronics area). So now you can add the black community to the list of people that the left show disrespect and utter disdain for.

I think you are grossly underestimating the power of marketing.

Kids aren't born with a craving for sugar laden cereal. They develop the desire after seeing a quadtrillion Trix and Captain Crunch commercials cleverly run during the morning cartoon hour.

I concur, NC. However, it's not limited to kids.

My point is good marketing creates damand. Hyway's point was that manufacturers are merely supplying an inherent demand.

My contention is that most demand is created.

chili, advertising just gets you to buy one sweet product over another, its the damn sugar itself that makes you want to eat frosted flakes over corn flakes.

Tilt doesn't live in Coldwater, MS or he would soon figure out that unless you go to Senatobia to the WalMart, you just won't get anything.

Hyway, I agree with the availability theory in part, but that still doesn't account for changes in eating patterns in areas where things have always been in high supply.

People are getting fatter because they are conditioned for convenience. You think people go eat fast food because it TASTES better?

They do it because of the convenience factor. You think marketing isn't important? If people just naturally wanted the "fat" foods over something else, KFC would be pissing in the wind with grilled chicken.

Marketing will fuel the run on that product, much like it does every other product.

XL, I might be wrong, but I don't think I have made any comments about how children should be raised.

It's interesting that the diet question has shown up on several unrelated threads as of late.

I agree with some of what both Chili and Hyway are saying about consumption. Overeating is a result of ease of supply, bodily cravings and a complete lack of self-control. We all get all of those periodically, some far more than others. My prediliction, both fortunately and unfortunately, is towards beer.

chili, I agree that advertising prods a lot of the choices that we make. But I don't think its advertising that sets trends. Advertising follows it to make sure whoever they are promoting gets their piece of the pie. Look at green cars, automakers weren't advertising about the wonders of green cars until high gas prices caused an increase desire for green cars. Then it became a useful selling point for automakers who wanted to get customers who wanted 'green' cars.

rosey, I agree with you 100% on that, but will add that its also become somewhat acceptable to be fat (movie theaters have seats for fat people, etc)
