I am wondering whats the best method for packing peanut butter in the winter so it doesnt freeze? It's one of my favorite backpacking foods...

if its cold enough to freeze peanut butter I might just stay home. With the oils would it freeze as quickly as water etc?

Put it in a ziplock bag and stick it in your pack close to your back. Or a pocket. Keep it near your body to keep it warm.

spread it into relatively thin sheets separated by wax paper - to use just cut it to desired size

I don't think peanut butter will freeze, at least completely. I know there wasn't a problem with it freezing at FYAO IV when it got down to -26*F.

the wax paper idea actually comes from handling Ultralight Joe's Moose Goo in the cold : http://www.ultralightbackpacker.com/moosegoo.html

Anything you don't want to freeze in the winter has to be kept close to the body (i.e., in a pocket, etc.) at all times -- especially up north, where the daytime high might not reach a thaw.

I keep my peanut butter m&m's in the outer coat pocket. Easy to reach, out of the wind, and just close enough to me to keep them warm enough so they don't freeze over.

Oh, and about the thread degeneration, let's face it. When you put the phrase peanut butter packer into the title, you're just plain asking for it... :)

i'm w/ carlette and deoredx...i think it'd take a lot to freeze pb...even if it did freeze, a couple minutes in warm hands should thaw it pretty quickly

When I was in boy scouts, we would pack into these squeeze tubes. We did the same thing with jelly.

They were like a big toothpast tube, but they had a removable end opposite the opening that had a slide deal that kept it from coming out the back.

I have no idea where we got them.

Chief, I have those. They're made by cohglans and you can buy them at sports authority, kmart, etc. Anywhere car camping stuff is sold. They actually work very well. The trick is to nuke the peanut butter until it's pourable to fill the tube. It returns to it's original consistancy quickly.

The only problem with those tubes is they are too dang big.
Way too much PB or jelly for a weekend backpack.

Well, I know how some of my former clients would smuggle dope into the jail.........

but it would be hard to tell where the peanut butter started and ended if you use that method.

Stove, you don't have to fill them full. The end closure clip slides up on the tube and you can put just a bit of PB in there.
I personally hate cleaning them out. My favorite way to carry PB is the skippy squeeze sticks, but I'm almost out of those and I haven't seen them in stores in a long time.

Yea Sass, I have several of those tubes.
They do not work so well for small amounts.

I've been using the MRE PB packs. GREAT!

How long would a small package of peanut butter last if you vacu-sealed it?

vacu seal?

Does peanut butter need to be refrigerated?

A jar of it stays in our pantry for longer than any trip I have taken.

Yeah, just how long does PB stay good?

I have several big jars of PB that were given to me after the hurricane. It's gonna take me a long time to use them all.

Sassafrass - same here, I used to always take the Skippy PB tubes, haven't seen them in a long time and I've looked hard.

PB is like honey, no refrigeration necesary and it lasts a very long time. That's partially why those are 2 of the 3 ingredients in Moose Goo.

tech, I bought something like twelve boxes of them on clearance for $1.25 each, ages ago. I think we have 3 or 4 tubes left.

I guess I could buy enertia ones but they're expensive and skippy and Jif tastes better.

Although this thread title is a little spooky I will go ahead and post here.

I wrote an email off to the producer on the peanut butter in the small packages (tubes).

It is still being produced. There records indicated Food Lion was buying to product but my local store in Maryville didn't have any.

Has anyone found any lately?

My local Wal-Mart Super Stores have quit carrying it also.
It was pretty expense compared to reg plastic jars. Not sure how well it sold.

Talk to your grocery store managers. They'll often order you something they don't regularly stock.
