arcteryx bora 80 “Hi all; Was wondering if someone might know what the bora 80 differences were between the '04 and '05 models. Thanks.” 2:48:28 PM 11/19/05 “Anyone have the Arc'teryx Bora 80? I am looking for a new pack and I like this one. But before I throw down 3 or 4 C notes on a pack, I want to get as much information as I can.” 7:42:19 PM 12/17/08 “I rented Bora 80s twice several years ago for climbs. I was really impressed with how well they were constructed and how well they carried large loads. The Arc'teryx belts are multilayer thermoform; stiff but comfortable and will take a lot of load off your shoulders. I think they've redesigned their line since then, but they still have a good rep for being bombproof and dang near waterproof. They are spendy, though.” 9:46:08 PM 12/17/08 “I have a bora 65. Its a relatively heavy pack, and easily holds enough gear for a 4 day trip. Longer than that and you are pushing it. It is very sturdy and rugged, which accounts for the added weight. The Bora 80 will be way overkill for weekend and three day trips. It will be half empty. For a 5 day or longer trip, you will appreciate the extra volume. The belt and shoulder pads are nicely padded, and very comfortable.” 9:04:27 AM 12/18/08 “Thanks. I guess I need to look at the 65 as well. Most of my trips will be weekenders or three day trips. However, I would like to have the extra room for being out a week or more. Decision, decisions.” 9:11:10 AM 12/18/08 “The Bora 80 probably cinches down a good deal, but if the 65 is 6.5 pounds, the bora is likely 7.5 pounds. that is the problem with internal frame packs, you need three or four of them for different loads and purposes.” 11:45:04 AM 12/18/08 “What are you using now? Have you looked at the Gregory Palisade 80 or the Osprey Argon 85? I've never tried a Gregory, but I love my Osprey. With an investment like this, I'd try each of them on in person - I think REI carries all three brands.” 12:11:58 PM 12/18/08 “Chili just curious.. what kind of hiking are you doing with this pack.. Reason I'm asking is I'm looking at the Osprey Aether 85 for Climbing Rainier.. I have tried it on and its sweet.. I'm wondering if it's overkill or if I could go with the 70.. '32oz” 12:15:45 PM 12/18/08 “32oz, I'd go with what RMI recommends, which I think is a minimum 80L pack. That way, the guides can load you down with all the equipment they don't want to slog up to Camp Muir, the bastages.” 1:13:28 PM 12/18/08 “They make great packs. I had an old style 65. Well-made and bombproof. I have a needle pack of theirs now. My giant pack is a Dana.” 1:21:29 PM 12/18/08 “I have been an external frame guy from the get go. (When I started backpacking, internal frame packs were the "great unknown"). I use a Kelty Trekker (and have for many, many moons). I will use the pack for 2-3 day trips 80% of the time, but I am planning on some week long trips. The beauty of the external frame pack is that I can strap a limitless amount of crap to it for the long trips. I am inclined to get the Bora 80 and cinch it up on short trips. Kleetn, I will look at the other packs.” 8:45:00 PM 12/18/08 “You just need a new pack...Your Kelty is about to fall apart.” 5:33:03 AM 12/19/08 “I have a kelty yukon and a tiogga.. I got the yukon to hold up to the abuse the packs took on scout trips, and then I got the tiogga so I could carry a boatload of gear for the younger scouts... Love all the crap you can strap on them.. Will probably go with the Aether 85.. Thanks for the tips.. '32oz” 5:45:56 AM 12/19/08 “Getting rid of old gear is like getting rid of that favorite old shirt. Even when it's in rags, you still want to keep it.” 5:47:11 AM 12/19/08 “Yeah I know...” 5:48:40 AM 12/19/08 “Seriously do you want a pack that big for weekends and 3 day hikes? You will end up filling it up. Alone it weighs more than my big 3. I use the Gregory z-pack 55lt for weekends to a 8 hike through the 100 mile wilderness. On that hike it carried 9+ days of food and all of my gear, nothing strapped on the outside but a z-rest. For weekend trips this pack is only half full even with some luxury items. Just my 2-cents” 6:44:02 AM 12/19/08 “I did two 6 day summer trips (carrying food for 6 days) using a Tallon 44. Quarter dome was strapped to the bottom everything else was inside... Granted i was pushing the weight limit when fully loaded with water, but I had no problems.. That's why I originally asked what it was going to be used for... An 80 would carry gear for 2... I pulled out the Atmos 50 i got my son for Christmas and was salavating at it... Still kicking myself for not buying 2.. '32oz” 7:01:10 AM 12/19/08 “I still have my old Kelty Tioga from 1973. It is indestructible. I like the Bora 65 for hikes up to 4 days, but for 5 day or longer hikes, I'll dust off the Tioga. I also have a super light pack for when I can be solo in cooking and tenting. The Tioga was good enough for 3 Ptarmigan Traverses, 5 Rainier climbs, the JMT, and lots of smaller trips. I have 3 other old Keltys in the shed for loaners for scouts and scout parents, and a Lowe internal frame. My wife loves her Gregory internal frame.” 8:11:39 AM 12/19/08 “Good info. Thanks. I will look at the Bora 65. I like the fit and suspension on the Bora, so it will be a 65 or an 80.” 12:34:36 PM 12/19/08 “The Bora 65 is 5.95lbs that is heavy but it does have a great suspension and it should be pretty versitile. It is similar in size to the Gregory Forester that I had when I started. It got relegated to my Winter big load pack and then got sold as my gear got lighter. Now I do winter with my Z-pack. I am really hoping that this spring I can order a new ULA Amp pack for warm weather trips 10.6oz 2600ci that will get my summer weight down to about 9lb base weight. But it has taken me along time to be comfortable with this weight.” 12:52:41 PM 12/19/08
