While I am a religious person I do realize that atheists can be good, moral people too.

Gee how magnanimous. I believe that in spite of believing in silly fictitious anthropomorphic skygods, the religious deluded can be good, moral people as well.

Whew luckily stuff like this only happens in churches....

You know I personally wish claiming the term Christian came with more alientation. I still think Constantine made the worst mistake when he made it legal. Then anyone could be one.

Rubbing forehead...MarkO..you probably missed this in school. Prior to Constantine and even today in many "loving societies" like the peace loving Muslims or some socialist regeims...being a Christian is more or less a death sentence.

I don't mind all these different groups having their own delusions about invisible men living in the sky, its when they start forcing those delusions on those of us who don't share them through influence in the government and law that I start to feel a bit chafed.

Obviously, it's impossible to get to a common agreement about what's "bad" and "good"... but seeing as religion is probably the single greatest source of death in history (until we nuke ourselves or whatever), I don't know that any religious groups have much right to enter the debate. And yet they seem to be the ones shouting "morality" the loudest...

I am sorry but I can see how this would happen. We left a large Lutheran Church due to the very fact that most churches have lost their purpose.
Their leadership treated the Church like their private 'Country Club" and so we left.

I have no problems with those who do not believe as I do. Thats between you and whatever you believe.

So, why are you sorry? You do seem to apologize a lot for your choices/opinions. Is it possible that at some subconscious level you realize that you're full of #&%!$?

aw heck, I knew I should've put an underscore in there... it's supposed to be pepsis formosa - tarantula wasp. Instead, I'm just super-lame.

overall, I think we all have some beliefs (myself included) that others would find to be ridiculous. I think that's a very comforting thing, even if the beliefs are absolutely laughable it's still much better than everyone believing the same thing. But when those beliefs start dictating law and public opinion, they get dangerous. The mormon church recently spearheaded a movement to make gay marriage illegal in California, which was passed last year. Whatever one's opinion on gays and their right to marry is, that's scary that a church was able to take these rights away from a group of people who were, most likely, not part of it...

Ahhh, those Catholics sure know how to love...

Thousands beaten, raped in Irish reform schools

DUBLIN – A fiercely debated, nine-year investigation into Ireland's Roman Catholic-run institutions says priests and nuns terrorized thousands of boys and girls in workhouse-style schools for decades — and government inspectors failed to stop the chronic beatings, rapes and humiliation.

High Court Justice Sean Ryan on Wednesday unveiled the 2,600-page final report of Ireland's Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse, which is based on testimony from thousands of former students and officials from more than 250 church-run institutions.

More than 30,000 children deemed to be petty thieves, truants or from dysfunctional families — a category that often included unmarried mothers — were sent to Ireland's austere network of industrial schools, reformatories, orphanages and hostels from the 1930s until the last church-run facilities shut in the 1990s.

The report found that molestation and rape were "endemic" in boys' facilities, chiefly run by the Christian Brothers order, and supervisors pursued policies that increased the danger. Girls supervised by orders of nuns, chiefly the Sisters of Mercy, suffered much less sexual abuse but frequent assaults and humiliation designed to make them feel worthless.

This is reminding me of the congressional hearing yesterday about 'restraint and seclusion' methods employed by sadistic teachers on special needs children in this country today.   When the investigator from the GAO started talking about case studies and analyzing autopsy reports....   let's just say it became stomach-churning very quickly.

Instead of getting rid of the bastards, school administrators were covering it up.   It sounded way too familiar ----

It's because those individuals think that by becoming a priest or nun, they will become cured of committing those atrocities.

I remember a private outfit called Anawakee that operated in Georgia and Florida.   Their alleged mission was to help 'troubled youth'....   but they wound up on "60 Minutes" back in the 80s for systematic cruelty and other bizarre crap. They finally got busted and the geezer who ran the place drew probation.   Mike Wallace went back a couple of years later and the guy was still running it in violation of his sentencing conditions.   He's dead, now, I'll bet.

A guy I knew slightly was sent there as a 15-year-old and he said they put him in solitary confinement for six months.   This guy was a psycho, so who knows?   I guess these sick places can run more smoothly if the victims have no credibility (?)

One of the things they were supposedly doing was putting the older abusive delinquents in charge of the younger ones with minimal supervision, like 'trustees' in a prison.

In exchange for this great service, well-to-do parents were shelling out thousands.

I got cornered in the cantina at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon this weekend by some babbling lunatic who tried to convince me and my friends that the Grand Canyon is absolute and irrefutable proof of the great flood, and that it's blatantly obvious that, rather than taking millions of years, it was created in a very short span, a year or so, by the receding waters of the flood.

I was content with just nodding and smiling and making an excuse to leave, but my friend, always the antagonizer, decided to ask him a few questions on such topics as:

Dinosaurs Fakes placed on the earth by god to test our faith (cue Bill Hicks - "I think god put YOU here to test MY faith")

Carbon Dating A tremendous lie by the satanists and evil jews that make up the scientific community

Inconsistencies in the bible There are no inconsistencies. It's all the word of god and is the only truth.

99.99% of the scientific community agreeing that the Grand Canyon took millions of years to form They're all wrong. Or they're deliberately lying because they're satan worshippers and god-hating atheists

The dude was a real winner.

Teen Birth Rates Higher in Bible Belt
Jeanna Bryner,, LiveScience
posted: 1 HOUR 32 MINUTES AGO

(Sept. 16) -- U.S. states whose residents have more conservative religious beliefs on average tend to have higher rates of teenagers giving birth, a new study suggests.
The relationship could be due to the fact that communities with such religious beliefs (a literal interpretation of the Bible, for instance) may frown upon contraception, researchers say. If that same culture isn't successfully discouraging teen sex, the pregnancy and birth rates rise.

Scientists aren't sure why religiously conservative states tend to have higher teen birth rates. "We conjecture that religious communities in the U.S. are more successful in discouraging the use of contraception among their teenagers than they are in discouraging sexual intercourse itself," researcher Joseph Strayhorn said.
