This trip came about kind of as a last minute thing. I was trying to make the MD AT trip, but decided that wasn't going to happen. I was dying for a trip, since I haven't been out since the birth of my son. Harriman seemed like the logical solution, close by and nice views. The only one that could go on such short notice was GreenMonkee. Thank God for that, or I probably would have ditched the idea. I picked up GM around 2:00pm (I'm a slacker)and we headed on up, I could feel the excitement as we neared the NY border. I so needed this trip! We arrived at the trail head a little before 4:00, and quickly made our way up Tom Jones to the shelter. It's a short hike, but this was about the "getaway" more so than the mileage.
We arived at the shelter and imediatly set out in search of wood, as the temp was about 30 and dropping fast. Gm was hauling some big a$$ timber back to the shelter, you should have seen him, it was impressive! I had brought my Sven (thanks Marko for the Idea) and started tearing up those logs, saw dust was flying and I was generating heat baby! Starting the fire was a snap and we settled in for a night of Growlers (oh Boy!) and Black Berry brandy. We had and awesome time BSing and messin' with fire. I finally managed to crawl in my bag aroud 1:AM? I was a little more than happy I gotta tell ya. Sun morning we awoke to a beautiful white blanket if snow, and it was still comming down pretty steady. We where in no hurry, so we started another fire, had breakfast and enjoyed the snow. At about 11:00am we geared up and made our way back to the trail head. My soul had been renewed. I drove home with a smile, and couldn't wait to see my little munchkin waiting at home. Thanks GM for a great little escape!

PS. Thanks LTHiker for the hand warmer tip for the bottom of the canister stove. At 25 degrees it worked like a charm. Gm took a couple of pics, I'll post them soon.
Peace!

It was a pleasure, Slacker :)

Watch out for those Growlers, they'll get ya'.

Too bad we didn't bring cameras. The photo quality of my phone sux but it's better than nothing.

I was surprised by the condition of the shelter. It was a mess last time I was there.

We had a beautiful crescent moon and starry sky on Saturday night. Waking up to snow was awsome!

I'll definitely be picking up one of those Svens. They're the schit!

Hey BS, I forgot my rainjacket and a glove in your truck. I'm in no rush to get it back.

It was very clean, swept out, no cans, no garbage. A pleasant surprise indeed!

*GM, no problem, I'll hold on to them for ya.

Yeah, it was great because it was more snowy than rainy. Cold rain sucks!

Yea, we took the rocks from one to build up a nice wall to reflect the heat back to the shelter. We were toasty! Or was it the booze, I'm not sure ;-)

It would be nice to have both of them going at the same time. Of course finding enough wood might pose a problem.

There was lots of big stuff around. Cutting it up and/or hauling it uphill to the shelter is where the problem arises ;)
