December Full Moon Campout and Hike “Full Moon Campout December 16-18 There will be a full moon on Thursday, December 15, so it should still be good for a campout and full moon hike the weekend of December 16-18. Location not determined yet, but possibilities would be GSMNP or the Big South Fork, or any good choice in the east Tennessee area. Anyone interested? http://www.thebackpacker.com/trips/trip/857.php (sorry about this being posted twice) last edited: 12/06/05 10:10:57 PM” 10:08:39 PM 12/06/05 “How about RMNP? ;-)” 10:13:02 PM 12/06/05 “Sure thing :-) I cannot even begin to tell you how much I miss Colorado. I WILL be back!” 10:20:08 PM 12/06/05 “Frozen Head? Cumberland Gap? Are we hiking or car camping?” 11:13:14 PM 12/06/05 “White Rocks in a full moon...pretty impressive Grand Gap Loop BSNRA...very nice. GSMNP can't take my dog :(” 4:53:25 AM 12/07/05 “Chili, I was thinking car camping and night hiking. Cumberland Gap sounds like a good suggestion :-) Sticks, where are the places you mentioned? I'm not familiar with them. last edited: 12/07/05 6:43:36 AM” 6:41:41 AM 12/07/05 “Cool, woodzie. Count me in. Cumberland Gap doesn't really lend itself to car camping, but BSF would. What about something near Roan Mountain?” 9:34:48 PM 12/07/05 “I can't totally commit yet but I would be interested” 10:51:27 PM 12/07/05 “Chili is right about Cumberland Gap. The campground is at the bottom of the mountain and the trails are on top. Grand Gap is a possibility. For one thing they keep one restroom/shower facility heated all winter...nothing like a warm place to sh....you get the idea. There is a way to drive to Grand Gap unless they get a snow storm which at this time of year is unlikely. I have drove a car up there several times and camped. There is a pulloff big enough for 3-4 cars and the entire area is flat. If you have a map of Big South or go to the web site and look at it, Grand Gap is by the main headquarters at Bandy Creek. The trail follows the ridge on the cliffline above the river. I have done it in a full moon before. I have a civil service test on Saturday so I would not be able to get there until Saturday afternoon.” 4:36:09 AM 12/08/05 “Grand Gap sounds good. Chili emailed and also recommended Abrams Ranger Station/Campground. Even though I set the trip up for Friday night as well, it may be Saturday before I get there. A lot of it depends on if anyone else is going to be there Friday :-) If the weather isn't agreeable (rain), I'll cancel.” 8:49:01 AM 12/08/05 “Cancel for rain? Wimp.” 4:21:08 PM 12/08/05 Not looking good “Doesn't look like much interest in this trip, which is probably a good thing because I have a sinus infection. If anyone wants to do an overnight, let me know. Otherwise, I'm thinking this trip is cancelled.” 7:04:41 PM 12/12/05 “Unless the weather is just miserable, I guess I will just dayhike Saturday.” 7:08:17 PM 12/12/05 “errr, won't you be seeing that full moon at home, anyhoo, chili? HI COTTONSOCKS! :-)” 10:16:21 PM 12/12/05 “Going to Frozen Head this weekend if anyone is interested. Email me....” 11:22:01 AM 12/15/05 “I think there's enough snow in Michigan that we might be able to get out to one of the parks and do a little snow shoeing this weekend! (That is, if it doesn't melt... LOL-- It's Michigan.... wait 5 minutes and the weather will change....)” 1:08:21 PM 12/15/05 << back to December Full Moon campout and Hike page
