Also, my Turkey Day hike was 3 days of glory too - I spend the night at Silers Bald, Hazel Creek campsite,and Bear Creek campsite alone - didn't hardly see any other hikers out except for at High Rocks!!!”

“I didn't! I got sick in the 100 Mile Wilderness, made it to Baxter and went into Millinocket to see a doctor. By the time I got well enough to finish, the weather had went south with no indication that it would improve until May or so. I finished about 5.2 miles short, lacking only the climb of Katahdin.”

“Well, I may as well 'fess up. As Bitpusher accused me the other day, I never did hike the AT. Truly, I was camping on a beach in the Virgin Islands (St. Thomas) during all that time. I caught a flight to the mainland, hitched a ride to Pearisburg, Va where I met Crash Bang who gave me a ride to Trail Days. From there I eventually returned to the V.I. and after a decent (perhaps too lengthy) interval I made my way to Millinocket to catch a helo to the top of Katahdin and have my picture taken. Unfortunately I got a little too drunk and smoked up in town and by the time the air cleared it was a little late in the season and no one would fly. I feel dirty and ashamed (raised catholic, I enjoy those feelings) for misleading my fellow tt'ers.

Next year I'm returning to the Virgin Islands and do the whole thing again, except this time I SHALL FINISH.”

Is that all the trip report we get? There are five campsites on Hazel Creek! Did you then hike out, take a shuttle boat or, perhaps, you portaged your kayak with you?

This is good cause for a celebration. We'll have to do-it-up on my next visit up there. You beautiful doll, you!

“Nimblefoot - How do you explain being seen going over the Fontana Dam? If you were in the V.I., you could at least tell us which Island and beach. Now remember, I used to live near there and even got the Navy to fly me to and from one of the V.I.'s.

“Smokygirl, to hike the 900 miles of the Smokies how many miles did you have to do. I have heard it is close to 1500 miles just to get the 900. Did you keep records of that.

The details of my Turkey Day/Hazel Creek hike are on www.footpounder.com. However, I hiked from Campsite 82 to High Rocks and came out at the tunnel on Lakeview Dr. Road to Nowhere. I did Bone Valley back in the summer when my ankle recooped enough to kayak across and then backpack up towards Hall Kress Cabin.

Towndawg - I was so tickled that I ran into Skidder in Maggie Valley and that he came out the next weekend to enjoy my last mile with me!

Ghost - I don't want to pursue another goal - I am just going to get out as much as I can and enjoy my life outdoors. I will thru-hike the AT in 2007 though...

I would love to finally go on a TT hike with you all again soon, but... let's do it somewhere outside the Smokies! hashahahhahahhahah!”

“Ewker - I chronicled every trip. It took me 1124 miles - if I counted right. The lowest it took a 900 Miler was 1092. It took me 4 years of being a weekend warrior with a few long weekends and one week long backpack...”

Now, about Blanket Mountain, it seems to me that they discontinued maintaining a spur trail on Blanket Mountain years ago, shortly after I hiked it. The excuse given was that there were no good views there. Of course, this was not true. But the best views were relatively close to the start of the spur trail. Did you hike this unmaintained spur trail?”

Nowslimmer - yes, I hiked up to Blanket Mountain from Jakes Gap. I really liked it up there. I hiked up Spruce Mountain to the old chimney, which is an unofficial spur and very very pretty up there. The unofficial was better than the official...”
