Klear Water
Anyone use this stuff? Seems easier to use than Polar Pure and Aquamira.

http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/klearwater_xinix_chlorine_dioxide_clo2_water_treatment.html

Versatile: Effective through a broad range of temperatures and pH.
Durable: Lasts for months after opening.
Self-indicating: KlearWater is yellow when active, becomes clear when inactive.
Multi-Use: KlearWater may be used as a hand and surface cleaner, oral rinse, and emergency wound irrigant.
Safe: No harmful chlorite residue.
Convenient: Simple to use, easy to carry.
Lightweight: Compact size < 3 oz package weight (30 ml)
Cost Effective: 30ml bottle treats 30 liters minimum - treat more by increasing contact time and decreasing dose
Proven: Over 10 years of proven performance worldwide.

I think the "months after opening" may be the bad thing. Doesn't Polar Pure last a lot longer than this once opened?

It seems interesting, I might give it a try. The "Virtually odor - and taste-free" claim sounds familiar. I usually taste the virtually tasteless stuff.

The other "fine print" that dampens my enthusiasm is "1 mL for 15-30 minutes. Halve dosage and double the treatment time, or double dosage and halve the treatment time. Increase treatment time for cold water temperatures, cloudy water, and treatment of some organisms (e.g., protozoan cysts)."

In the summer, I like my water right away and as cool as possible. I hate leaving it out to warm whyile treatment takes place. Leaving the bottle in a stream to stay cool would result in a longer wait. Being sure to avoid protozoan cysts would also mean a longer wait. In cooler months, the wait is also long.

I don't think this will be the water treatment option that gets me to stop using my PUR.

Aqua Mira lasts for years, so I'll stick with that.

pedxing - just leave your bladder or Nalgene in your pack and it will stay cool.

4 years or until expiry date on bottom of bottle to be exact.

I repackage the Aquamira into dropper bottles. It's a very light solution. I hate waiting for it to be ready but it's a very light approach. I saw Captain Hook and Crash Bang use Polar Pure and thought I would give it a try so I ordered a bottle.

I still use the pump, especially when I hike with non-hiking friends. They get grossed out by unfiltered water. Doesn't bother me, however.

What happened to Klear Water!?
Can't seem to get anymore Klear Water. What happened!?

Does anyone have experience with Katadyn's MicroPUR MP1 Purification Tablets? Their active ingredient, like Klear Water, is chlorine dioxide. I would be specifically interested in knowing:

1. Are they tasteless like Klear Water?
2. Can you treat larger quantities of water like 4-6 liters with a single tablet if you let it sit overnight.

As to 1), I would imagine so if the active ingredient is the same and is present in similar concentration.

Don't know about 2).

I've got some MicroPUR but haven't test driven it yet.

1) There is a taste (to me) but it's subtle. If you are used to using another product with the same active ingredient and did't notice it I doubt you'd notice it with the MP1.

2) no. It specifically states what volume of water a tablet can purify. Remember its the concentration of the active ingredients that purify the water not its mere presence. More water, less tablets = lower concentration.

Oh yeah, you can buy Klear Water here:

Out of Stock
humanpackmule, Thanks for the link but I have tried this before. Everyone of those links either does not exist, no longer has Klear Water listed as a product, or, even if the list it, it is out of stock.

Probably Micropur would be fine. I actually hiked the JMT from South Lake to Kearsarge Pass and I forgot my KlearWater. I spent the entire week drinking directly from stream and lake. I did taking water from Leconte Valley though since there are a lot of mules wandering around.

doesn't say out of stock

the clo2 tabs work great. use as directed. i would not go with a reduced dose with increased exposure. technically this should work but the tabs are super light... lighter than the klearwater setup.

there is no taste if you wait 4 hours just like klearwater or aquamira. frankly, i can't taste anything after 30 minutes.

it's just clo2... it's just different packaging. the oxidants dissipate after 4 hours so there is nothing to taste.

I just tried to call the East Coast number on the XiniX website. A guy answers and tells me to call the West Coast number. The West Coast number just rings...

I sent an email to the two email links. We'll see what happens.

I used MicroPUR extensively in South America for a year with excellent results (read, no intestinal parasites...well, I did get Giardia once but I figured that's not too bad).

Anyway, I bought a bunch and still use it here from time to time. Me likes for when the water is clear.

Klear Water IS available
I recently emailed another enquiry to XiniX and they are shipping 32oz bottles of Klear Water now...email them and hopefully you can do the same. I just received 3 bottles.

I am now using the clo2 tabs plus a steripen for everything now. This was a great product for me in its time but no longer.

Klear Water is still the best though
The great thing about Klear Water is that you can treat 4 or 6 liters overnight with a single dose. Micropur ClO2 tablets do not make this claim even though the active ingredient is the same.

Are you claiming one can't treat 4-6 liters of water overnight with Micropur? I am hoping not. I personally have no tolerance for marketing weasel-language.

Micropur has a lot of advantages over Klear Water. Klear Water has a 6 month shelf life. Micropur has a shelf life of YEARS. That's pretty significant given, as you point out, that both forms of water treatment have the same active ingredient.

Micropur
Yogisan,
I am not a marketing person but I have asked that question from experts regarding treating a larger amount of water using Micropur tablets. No one would reply. Maybe no one wants to stick their necks out? As you say, I would expect it to work the same though. I have kept a bottle of Klear Water for over 3 years by making sure it stays refrigerated while not in use. I do admit though, Micropur is easier to use and lighter.

i checked but didn't see it there

...but i did notice that aquamira is now making CLO2 tablets! i did not know this. i think this makes three major brands of clo2 tablets on the market which is good news for consumers. there used to only be one...
Yogisan

...the other brands being Potable Aqua and Katadyn.

It's awesome that the market is so rich that multiple vendors can enter into it. It creates a lot of innovation, keeps prices competitive and quality high.

I still prefer my homemade gear. :)

Klear Water is available directly from XiniX
I received 32 oz bottles of Klear Water directly from Xinix by emailing them at dti@san.rr.com

They mailed me 3 32oz bottles and I mailed them a check for the amount + postage after I received the product.
