Lets see if Pekka checks in here any more.

I was wondering what the thread was called about your brief trip to Teddy Roosevelt Park a few years back... and/or any advice.

Been thinking about such a trip. Will see if I get it on the radar this year. And maybe you want to return, hmmmmm???

I've seen someone on Backpacker talk about going there like in July or Aug -- on the way to a Glacier trip. Now *that* doesn't sound like a good time of the year to be hitting that park to me, probably 110 degrees!!! lol

lizs, I went to TRNP on Memorial Day weekend. There's a pick of my tent site on Phil's pic pages. It was unbearably hot (upper 80s, sunny, and truly desert dry, so dehydration was what got me. Stark beauty is the attraction, and there was lots of wildlife, but mostly heard at night. Stars beyond imagining in the clear night sky, which also meant that it got pretty chilly overnight. Extremes would describe the experience. Hard to carry enough water for the trip and still be able to handle the load. I had my non-water pack weight down around 20, but with the water the rangers rightly said I needed to carry, it was about 60 lbs. Very few places on the trail to get water; the river looks nice, but has extremely fine silt even when "clear" that clogs filters, and sometimes ruins them. Lots of alkaline taint in some sources, too.

I thought I was prepared, but I wasn't ready for the heat/low humidity sapping my body, nor the load on top of it. Plus I got a late start -- this was definitely a time to be hiking at dawn and taking a siesta during mid-day.

Yeah, Pekka saw my other note! :-) (I'm thinking I have an e-mail for you, but -- can't remember part of your name, doh, so finding it might be hard. Or I would have e-mailed. DOH!)

Sounds a lot like the same problems encountered in South Dakota's Badlands, which I've had a little experience with, although just short term.

Which unit were you in? What route were you looking at?

And -- THANKS! :-)

Just checking back...
lizs, I'll have to check my guidebook to remind me of the trail name, but it was the north unit, which is far less visited than the south unit of TRNP.

Thanks. This is one of many IDEAS at this point, but I would be interested in hearing more. :-)

I'm wondering if pekka has been around lately. Looking for some information on the Harrison Hills section of the IAT.
