Hobb's Cabin, anyone?
I'm thinking about doing an overnighter next week, to Hobb's Cabin at Savage Gulf.

I'm not sure which day yet, because it depends on my wife's work schedule, which I won't know until Saturday, but I'm thinking Wednesday night is the most likely.

I'm desperate to get another bag night in this year, so I'll probably go alone if I have to.

Anybody else interested?

I've got to work Wed but could leave after work. I'm off Thurs/Fri so Thursday night would work better. Post your plans once you know.

I might be up for it Bit. Not sure what my plans are but I am off from this Friday until the 2nd of Jan. Just depends on family things, but let me know when you decide what day for sure.

My wife said she'll try and get her schedule for next week today, but usually she cannot get it until Saturday.

The scheduling where she works sucks big time. They run their work week from Sunday to Saturday, and post the next week's schedule the day before it starts, even though they know a week or so in advance what it's going to be. It makes it impossible to plan anything.

I am interested and Wed. would work ok for me also. Was planning a return trip to Roan High Shelter, but it is just too far. Savage Gulf is alot closer and I haven't been to Hobbs cabin either. Stovey I hope you get to make it also.

Doesn't have her friggin' schedule yet.

The problem is compounded because the kids are out of school, and my sister-in-law works at the same place. We share child-monitoring duties, so it's possible that I might have to stay home to watch my kids and my nephew, too.

OK, so my wife has gotten tired of me pestering her about her schedule, so she said just plan the trip and I'll work around it somehow.

So, how about this:

Meet Wednesday evening at Savage Station, spend the first night there, then hike to Hobb's Cabin on Thursday, spend Thursday night there, hike out on Friday morning. I'd make it a day later, but I know she has something planned for Saturday and I don't want to impact it any.

Does that work okay for folks?

karo, if I remember correctly, there are 5 bunks made with webbing. Seems like I slept well, but I remember the smoke from the fire messed with my allergies a bit. Some campsites about 40 or 50 yards from the cabin as well.

It will be dark before I get there Wed afternoon at Savage Station.

Do they lock a gate?

I don't think so. Emmy will know for sure.

I'll be leaving from my place around noon. The last time I went it took me three hours to get there, but I had family with me then.

You gonna carry some firewood for a fire Wed night? How close is the camping area from the parking area?

I can haul a few logs up with me.
Tons and tons of trees down around me.

Long range weather.com forecast for Beersheba Springs looks great.
A low of only 32 Thurs night, high 40s by midday. 20% chance of rain. Perfect!!!

Stovie - the rarely lock the gate. Maybe sometimes on the weekends, but you shouldnt have a problem next week.

Stuff...
Register....the Rangers will check....
Firewood is ALL OVER...Pine beetle damaged trees were cut and much was left....
There is a gate but seldom locked...the Rangers have a house at the trailhead, it may be occupied, or not....water and bathrooms at the station (Soda Machine there too). Water access at the campsite may be turned off due to cold...there is a standpipe just inside the treeline...

Finally, enter the campsites by going downhill and East of the Wooden Office Building....it will save you steps.

....going downhill and East of the Wooden Office Building.....

You talking about the permit and ranger station?
If one is standing in front of the building looking at the building, which way do you go?

I remember a path over on the right hand side.
StoveStomper
10:10:23 AM
12/23/05

yep...
Walk around the building to the left, head Downhill and back to the right...(East)...the entry to the campground is at the bottom of the grassy area to the rear of the cabin in the treeline...

Yah I think it's around to the right. There is an access to the campground from that trail.

Bit's right...
but the trail loops around a circle to the left, going Downhil to the treeline cuts the circle...follow the Radius not the circumference...:-)

Hobbs Cabin

Watersource is downhill right of the front of the cabin...

Campground at Savage Ranger Station looking West...note the parking through the trees...the ranger cabin in through the trees to the left at the top of the grassy hill...
