“We are closest to the sun at this time of year, but the northern hemisphere is tilted at its farthest away from the sun at this time of year (which is why people in northern Alaska have no sun for the next month). Because of that steep angle less of the sun's energy hits us. On the flip side, the southern hemisphere is tilted well into the sun, so they get summer.”
