“Oh, I grew up celebrating Christmas. It was never religious, it was about much more important (and real) things - family and love and of course gifts. So "christmas" is just as good a label as "holidays", imho.”

“This past Monday at our Kiwanis club meeting a member talked about all of the symbols with Christmas. The speaker is also the associate pastor at my church. I thought it interesting when she confirmed that all of the hub-ub we do now dates back to Macy's trying to drum up business in the mid 1800's and that the holiday itself was an effort by the church to cash in on the pagan solstice holiday. I think some in the group didn't realize this. That same night I read the Grinch to my kids at bedtime. The last 3 pages stood out as compared to the days discussion. It's not about the gifts.”

Hoping to do some more hikes in 2006 and to meet more of the TTers in person!

Matt is definitely right about the 6 degrees of separation--Because of the internet, sometimes I think it's shrunken to 3 or 4 degrees-- as a child I would have never imagined being able to reach some anonymous person on the far side of the world while sitting at my desk...what joy technology brings...

For this, I raise my glass and toast to a bigger and better 2006, with many hikes and the meeting of new friends!

I mean, if I don't like cauliflower, I don't spend my day, each and every day, talking about how much I dislike cauliflower. This has gone beyond a mere distaste for Sarge, it's an obsession. Nearly every thread brings an out-of-the-blue reference to Sarge, new threads started out-of-the-blue, old threads dug up and rehashed. It's a serious obsession. I've never seen the likes of it on any of the many forums I frequent. You guys can be discussing cooking recipes or flying kites or polka dancing with no sign of Sarge around and then, voila, you start talking about him. I don't say this in defense of Sarge, I say it as an observation. Truly, many of you are obsessed with the man. You think of him a lot, and I do mean a LOT. This forum is permeated with you thinking of Sarge. It's a wee bit odd. Newcomers here will think Sarge is reincarted Elvis or something. If I don't like something, I don't fixate and dwell upon it 24/7. But that's just me.”
