I just missed my 6th anniversary of visiting Trail Talk. It was 3 days ago. I recall when Sass and I stumbled across this place, the first thread we saw was abbout feminine hygiene on the trail and radagasts post of " I dont seem to have that problem", we chuckled and stuck around.

Since then I have met countless TTers (I dont have a list but would geuss about 100), had some of the best trips of my life and met some absolutely wonderful people.

Its funny how a website can bring so many folks together, real strangers becoming friends. Very awesome.

I have seen marriages announced (and made) here, births, deaths, relationships come and go, been a part of representing this site as an adventure racer. I have met people from as close as a few miles, to california and many points in between. I have picked up complete strangers from the airport and invited into my home, simply because of this site. I saw the amazing trip cindylu took when she left the great white north and meandered to the southwest, visiting TTers all along the way. I have seen ( and experienced) an astounding amount of suppor and encouragement at high and low points in my life and the lives of others. This place is much more than random bandwidth chocked full of binary code, its a living breathing place that I love.

Thanks to you all for 6 years!!! Heres to the next 6!!!!!!

After being here for only 6 month, I can only hope that the next 5 and a half years are close to what you've described. So far it's been very interesting to say the least. Thanks bud, and congrats!

I like the idea of a wander East visiting TTer's...it would be a great way to see the country! Maybe when, and if, I get a new car..my present one only will head West and North although I have persuaded it to go to Michigan...cars! scheesh!

So Birch you just signed on right away! It took me a while and when I did, it was also Rads humour that got me hooked.

I'm really glad you remain a TT addict - it makes this a better place to hang around.

I agree with you, that while the backpacking and the craziness is what hooks most of us - there is real community here. It definitely showed through for me when I needed it most.

I'm almost at my 5 year sign up anniv and this past Oct was the 5 year anniv of when I found this place. Rad is also the one that made me feel right at home. I miss him. It's probabably been over 3 years now since he was a regular.

I agree with your feelings about this place.

birch also hit on something I've been meaning to start a thread on. Who all got married as a result of this board. I know Scully and Goose. When I first started posting someone else had just gotten married. I think there are 3-4 couples that met her. Anyone?

Happy Anniversary Birch!

One of these days Thinkbubelz & I will actually go on a hike with you and Sass... :-) You owe us at least one on the Pinckney-Waterloo Trail. ;-)

Maybe we can do a little snow shoeing over the holidays if the snow stays around!

birch - nice reflections! I feel the same. I've been since before the first TT trip, which was in Sept 98.

SARboy and trailartist, meerkat and nomad were the first two TT marriages.

I just passed an anniversary too.

Thanksgiving '97 I did that hike to Roaring Plains after not visiting since '86.

About that time I discovered TT and just had to post about my favorite place.......on earth.

Since then I've done a lot of miles up there with a bunch of TT'ers.

I nearly got Skully and Goose lost there in Oct, '02.
Skully got bitten on the hiney by a snake that day!!

I had my sixth anniversary in September. Long live Trailtalk! Have met tons of interesting people here, discovered great places I'd never known about, and learned so much about backpacking -- and people! (And the French! And atonement! Etc!)

thanks! :-)

For the record, we were never even close to being lost that day. We were merely momentarily confused. For a couple of hours.(and it was an itty bitty snake!)

According to the records I just passed my fourth year anniv. but I think that there was another variation of my name that I was using earlier (HogOnIce with no spaces) I'll have to try that login and see if it was older.

yep that account was six months older so its 4.5 years for me plus maybe a month of lurking wondering about the nutcases that were posting at the time (j/k)

I had to log in as my "other" self (sirepeteofmillwork) to see how long I've been here. Matt states I've been a poster here since 2/2000 but I was a lurker for the first 6 months also. I'm a little shy you see.....It was my main man Walindude that broke me out of my shell. I went down to the Savage gulf for my first trip that year. I remember him treating me like family when I was down there with him. I met Jerbear, The dude, Walkincrow, Rad and his wife Jen if I'm not mistaken, Naked Ape and Steve Hiker. Jerbear was the funniest man I ever met, cracked me up how he was watching and taking about Stevehiker...I made some great friends that week and still consider all of those guys good friends today but The dude and I hit it off the best for sure. Walkindude andf I have been the best of friends since the day we met. I miss that ole'boy.

I started about 7 years ago with my real name for a while, then found out people picked trail names and I was told I should pick a name associated with how I hike or hiking in general.

Does anyone know when thebackpacker.com first came into existence?

Just noticed that my 2nd TT anniversary rolled by on Sunday. I'm not around as often lately, but I'm around most days at least once to scan the lastest posts. I'm getting away this weekend for a 2-nighter trip out on the trail, so I'll call that my official celebration.
