I found a good, light, cheap aluminum mug to use for a cookpot at Shoppers Grocery store yesterday.Im not sure what it weights yet but it must be about 3 ozs or so and the one I got holds about 20 ozs if filled to the rim.It has a good flat bottom for stability and my stove/potstand and even a small fuel bottle fits inside. Its my lightest/smallest kit yet.Not bad for 3 bucks. Now I just wonder if SS found anything to insulate the handles yet,Im good at burning fingers!!LOL

I have a 2 cup measuring cup that I got at an antique shop for 25 cents. It's pretty old but in good shape, graduated for measuring flour, sugar, etc. Look for them at flea markets or antique markets.

That mug has been the topic of many a ultralight thread for the past few years.

It's made in Mexico and at one point, some Wal-Marts had it.

pedx picked up a couple for me a couple of years ago and I still owe him a windscreen/pot stand in return. (hanging head in shame)

I think it's one of the greatest cheap lightweight cup/cookpots around.

Aluminum causing Alzheimers is a debunked urban myth.

streamweaver: Get some silicone tape and lightly wrap the handle.

It will keep you from burning your hands. Aluminum is highly conductive with respect to heat which is why it is so good for cookware (it's much better than titanium for this reason). I use an aluminum can for a cook-pot on the trail and I use a silicone rubber band around the lip of the can to form an edge so I don't burn my lips when my lips touch it. That's not my invention, it's a packaged solution.

streamweaver - every covering I've tried on the handle burns off at some point.
Now I carry a small camp towel knockoff and I use that to pick up the handle.

My alcohol cookset is a red-bull stove, that 2 cup measuring cup, a tin foil windscreen, and tin-foil lid. I also include a bandana. The cup is for boiling water and drinking coffee/tea (I always use a mug/cup for a cookpot for this reason). The bandana is a hot-pad but has many other uses. The foil and cup are very light, certainly lighter than the alcohol fuel that I keep in a Platty Lil-Nipper with the top replaced with a "squirt" top.

Is your red-bull stove the potstand too?

My regular pepsi stove is a bit big to put in the mug with the rest of the stuff so tonite Ill be making a smaller burner. My potstand was one of those Magic heat stoves(fuel sucks but the stove is great)that I got at Kmart for 4 bucks. To make a lighter version I used one of those alum duct connectors for the center part and two short peices of alum bar stock(shortened) and copied the Magic stove design. It fits perfectly inside the mug!

Yeah. I use a pressurized side-burner design and a little piece of foil as a priming dish. I can boil 2 cups of water with just over .5 oz of alcohol.

I mean yes, the stove is the pot stand. That makes it a little trickier to work but I have gotten pretty good at it.

I think the titanium cups are about $15 in REI. My husband returned an item and had extra money left over and bought one or two. I didn't even want to know about it since we had regular ones that we never used anyway that were already light enough, those green ones that I think may be from REI or other camping type stores.

I like my titanium double-walled mug in the winter, but you sure can't cook in it! I have two single-walled titanium mugs both of which I like a lot but it takes more fuel to boil water in them since titanium doesn't distribute heat nearly as well as aluminum. Still, they are cool. My friend tells me that there is some new process for refining titanium and that it is more abundent than aluminum and that it will at some point be just as cheap as aluminum and more commonplace Don't know if that's true or not.
