any of you folks ever take the plunge into a cold lake, river or ocean on New Years Day?
I am thinking about it this yr just to say I have done it.

No. Never have. Never will. I've swam in 60ish degree water and that was bad enough. Birch is the damn crazy that does this type of thing.

Not for me without a survival suit. But I have been on a ship in the Bering Sea while polar Bears floated past on ice floes.

outamatches -
1. For membership in a unique group.
2. For the same reason people try to climb a mountain, swim across the English Channel, etc. Because it is there to be done!

I would have to think hard about purposely doing that. I fell through the ice, ice fishing a few years ago and although it was close to the shore and only up to my waist, that was the coldest I have ever been. My nads still haven't come out of hiding from that one.

In Yoho a couple years back, trailbunny went for a dip in a glacial pond - photo here:

Really funny stories - visiting in Alabama.
The Tennessee River ... and they have what they call a polar bear event... I SWIM in colder water!

Yep. Do it at dawn on January 1 in the Pacific Ocean off the Southern California Coast in water that's about 50F-55F (not nearly as cold as a midwestern lake). There are usually quite a few folks doing the same thing.
