Dinner is where you need to watch the eating-as well as snacking afterwards!” 11:39:32 AM 1/03/06 “sarbar, you're so right. you can eat the same amount of calories but spread it out over 6 meals a day and you'll lose weight just from that. eating throughout the day keeps your metabolism revved and keeps you alert.” 12:19:11 PM 1/03/06 “Having tried them all, the best way to lose weight is exercise...like pushing yourself away from the table!” 1:11:35 PM 1/03/06 maple “You body thinks its starving all day (it is). Whne youfill it up at night ..it hoards the calories. What others said. Eat three meals .. . .with an eye to portion control and each with a little protein and a little carb. Between the meals have a snack. Eg. yogurt.” 1:18:39 PM 1/03/06 “I think everyone has to do dieting their own way and what works for one person does not work for another. I stayed thin all my life by just eating dinner. I was never hungry for breakfast or lunch. I do, however, eat early enough in the day so I don't go to sleep with a full stomach and don't overload on dinner calories. A snack can also be a cup of chicken soup bouillon during the day or late evening when you stomach may feel too emtpy. It's generally never good to let yourself feel total hunger. Of course I do eat breakfast or an early lunch if I hike or do a lot of daytime activities. I think that to diet, you should have an idea of what calories the food you are eating has inorder to balance your meal or meals for the day along with energy burned.” 1:50:11 PM 1/03/06 “I think everyone has to do dieting their own way and what works for one person does not work for another. The same goes for sodas where people say stop drinking soda and you will take in many less calories, but if you don't drink soda or drink diet soda, that would be of no help to you. It all goes back to everything in moderation.” 2:08:39 PM 1/03/06 “day 2 and Ive stuck with it, even going to the gym :) I worked out today and took stairs at work also- (Had to take about 4 pain pills after though just to walk on my foot) 6 meals a day is tough to do as I am always way busy but its how im supposed to eat with my hiatial hernia. So I am trying to eat at least 3 meals a day.” 2:16:21 PM 1/03/06 “my fiance has been eating 3 meals a day with a piece of fruit or some yogurt between meals. it doesn't take long to eat and it keeps her wide awake with high energy levels.” 3:19:19 PM 1/03/06 Good luck to all!!! “Here is the rule (doesn't mean healthy) if you eat less calories than you expend you'll lose weight! If you ate Nacho Cheese and Cool Whip right before you go to bed as long as you eat less calories than you expended during the day you'll lose weight! Notice I said doesn't mean healthy. I agree with LH, what ever works best for each individual. I have to watch portion size and eating when I'm bored. That being said I lost 5 pounds I am 140 right now!! yippee!” 5:56:56 PM 1/03/06 “6 measl a day? ugh no way could I do that. I will try to do a snake and dinner.” 8:22:58 PM 1/03/06 “Maple..what they mean by 6 meals is think 6 very tiny meals....or 3 regular meals and 3 snacks. What it does is keep you sated feeling so you are not as likely to binge. :-)” 9:51:27 PM 1/03/06 “maple eats snakes...bleh!!! do they really taste like chicken maple?” 9:58:44 PM 1/03/06 “Grrrr...I gained 6 lbs over three weeks...too much holiday get-togethers. :o( And there's still a lot of chocolate and cookies left!!!!” 3:39:09 AM 1/04/06 “I dumped the left over fudge in the trash. Our problem is that we have three birthdays in January. That means approximately five cakes w/ ice cream!! I went back to the gym last night and spent an hour on the bike. The place was packed! I saw a really interesting movie last night called "What the Bleep do We Know?!" and at one point they said that our cells actually plump themselves up if we have a constant negative body image, in responce to the message our brain is sending them non-stop. Interesting.” 8:01:15 AM 1/04/06 “Free to register and participate in the National Body Challenge at: www.discoveryhealth.com There are interactive tools for tracking exercise and building meal plans. Meal plans include recipes and grocery lists. Pretty cool even if you are just trying to get back on a healthy program.” 8:09:03 AM 1/04/06 “so i ate breakfast and lunch. man i was so humgry last night. screw that. i am better off not eating! no j/k. i need to take snacks with me.” 8:15:13 AM 1/04/06 mapes “what sarbar said: “Maple..what they mean by 6 meals is think 6 very tiny meals....or 3 regular meals and 3 snacks. What it does is keep you sated feeling so you are not as likely to binge. :-)” sarbar1 For me the three regular meals work, with a snack in the morning and a snack in the afternoon.” 8:32:08 AM 1/04/06 “don't forget its that time of the yr Girl Scout Cookie's” 9:00:25 AM 1/04/06 “Forget to buy them and you're better off. The GSA will take cash donations.” 9:52:18 AM 1/04/06 “I gained a lot of weight last year after I broke my foot and couldn't run anymore. I am only just now getting back to running. For me I have found that I can only really be good at changing one thing at a time. That is, I can diet and do that well or exercise and do that well. If I try to control too many parameters I don't do as well as if I focus on one thing. So I tend to focus on running and don't diet. I just eat sensible meals and try not to binge or anything like that. When I am running 30-40 miles/week I am burning an extra 3500-5000 calories per week and have to eat more so dieting is a bad idea anyway. The running carves the weight off me at an alarming rate. At some point my wife will tell me to start eating more.” 10:04:20 AM 1/04/06 “Jimmy san that is an excellent idea. I find thats where I fall down most...is trying to do both at the same time.” 10:10:29 AM 1/04/06 “Jimmy san that is an excellent idea. I find thats where I fall down most...is trying to do both at the same time.” 10:11:02 AM 1/04/06 “Jimmy san that is an excellent idea. I find thats where I fall down most...is trying to do both at the same time.” 10:11:02 AM 1/04/06 “Well I have found that running alone won't do it and dieting alone can but it's not that easy. Running and dieting, which I've been doing for a year and a half now, is working well for me. I monitor my weight and either cheat a bit if my weight's too low or do an all-out carb day to adjust. Yesterday I binged on crackers and eggrolls. I do that maybe 8 times in a 3 month period. I'm running 50 miles a week, burning 6800 calories. My weight has been stable at the goal weight for 6 months now, but it takes constant monitoring and adjustment of what I eat. A typical dieting day starts with me having fasted since bedtime, no water or anything. I weigh before treadmill, then drink a calculated amount of water during exercise, then weigh again. I drink coffee and break my fast at lunchtime with salad and cottage cheese. No snacks, just water or coffee until dinner time, where I eat anything I want for up to an hour. Then water only until bedtime.” 10:27:25 AM 1/04/06 “Holy smokes, you must be a stick! Im not that serious yet...perhaps when I get closser to my goal weight i'll have to take those kind of measures but not yet...Im just going to try and keepmy cals intake lower then my BMR and estimated calories burned in excersise...” 10:49:13 AM 1/04/06 “This is my personal experience and view and is not intended to piss anyone off. This is such a personal topic I guess it’s possible someone will be upset with this. It’s not my intent to upset anyone. It is my personal experience that not eating enough is far, far worse than eating too much. If I ate too little while working out I would wind up in a state a few weeks later when I would be utterly ravenous and eat anything I could get my hands on. In other words eating too little or fasting ultimately led to binging… and binging lead to a lowering of my self-esteem which in turn lead to more dieting/fasting, etc. It was a viscous and self-defeating cycle that I don’t think can be won. In the end excessive control of food, eating too little, and fasting were nothing more than another manifestation of an obsession with food in a way that was tied to my self esteem in a dangerous way. When I let go of the food (in a sensible way, mind you) and obsessed about running, fitness, and building muscle mass things went a lot better.” 11:25:52 AM 1/04/06 “I wish ... but I have taken off a few inches of waistline. My shirts fit better too. I was seriously overweight when I started my program. I had to get back into shape as I went along, and there were some points where I seriously overestimated my fitness and hurt myself trying to do too much too fast. But I have made it, even though there were times when I seriously thought I would not be able to. I know not every program works for everyone. I share what works for me in the hopes that it might prove useful to someone else.” 12:45:28 PM 1/04/06 “Well, I'm back home from my extended Christmas vacation. My fiance and I have been eating pretty well together, but now that we're on our own, I admit I'm a bit nervous about the choices I may make. I HAVE to continue to watch my portion size, and I've vowed to have one salad a day. Just finished off a small bowl of preztels, time to exercise now!” 3:17:58 PM 1/04/06 “Losing weight tip: Make only one portion for dinner w/no leftovers. If there are leftovers, quickly put them in the refrigerator or freezer. Jimmy san makes a valid point. Don't let yourself get really hungry and there really is no need for it when there are low cal snacks or drink some chicken bouillon. I think everyone knows not to go shopping when you are hungry. Being really hungry just makes you eat anything in the house. You don't always have to be full, just satiated. If you like bananas, a half of banana with diet soda or a low cal drink will fill you right up until dinner or as a late night snack.” 5:45:17 PM 1/05/06 “I think the best time to weigh yourself is in the morning (before you eat or drink) after your first pee and dump with the same amount of clothes on or not on if you want a realistic reading every day. last edited: 1/05/06 5:48:57 PM” 5:48:18 PM 1/05/06 “When I feel hungry the first thing I do is drink a glass of water. I read that often times when you think you are hungry you are in fact merely thirsty.” 5:53:17 PM 1/05/06 “I stepped on the scale last night at the gym out of curiosity (i checked my weight last monday) and well...I was shocked to find that I had lost 5 pounds even!!! I havent even been doing that much diffrent cept work out a tad harder, taking the stairs when I can, oh and I stopped taking my medicine, and ive been drinking loads of water, have styopped drinking cola and eatting sweets and fried stuff. :). I think thats a pretty good start for the new year resolutions! last edited: 1/07/06 10:27:12 AM” 10:25:19 AM 1/07/06 “That's great SC!” 11:09:24 AM 1/07/06 “Why did you stop your meds? Was that safe?” 11:16:45 AM 1/07/06 “sarbar, I asked my doc and he said he thought it was ok that I try. If I am careful about what I eat and drink, and when I eat and drink, I should be ok. So far so good. I find that if I dont eat or drink anything (even water) a couple hours before bed, then I am fine all night and I dont get sick. The meds were making me gain wight like a rhino. At this point, if I get sick, It isnt life threatening. last edited: 1/07/06 11:28:05 AM” 11:23:43 AM 1/07/06 “F-U-N. Nothing like blotation from meds :-( Don't blame you!” 12:22:58 PM 1/07/06 “good for you spirit coyote! i'm orking on my next 20 lbs and have increased the walking. i did almoxt 5 miles today.” 6:57:16 PM 1/07/06 “Good job SC!” 7:13:50 PM 1/07/06 “wtg SC & Cyndee ... y'all can do it!” 8:03:31 PM 1/07/06 “More hiking, days at the gym and watching what goes in the bod will always pay of. Don't forget to always drink lots of water.” 10:27:50 PM 1/07/06 “I'm on my way! :-) Hiked 10.5 miles this weekend with a great group of TTers! ;-) And, we finally got the new treadmill! I put in 35 minutes and burned about 205 calories this evening... I tried one of the programs and the inclines were challenging! Can't wait to get back on it!” 10:41:43 PM 1/16/06 “lost 5 more pounds, down 35.5! off to the exercise bike and a walk with my granddog this afternoon.” 9:23:01 AM 1/18/06 “I'm down 6 lbs since Christmas. I'm on my feet so much more now that I'm teaching, plus there's no time to eat! I'm also keeping up with my exercise, at least for the moment! Hopefully I can keep it up during my student teaching. :) Now....I'm off to try on the veil I just got in the mail with my wedding dress! Hope the dress fits a little better now!” 3:52:44 PM 1/18/06 “I'm down 6 pounds. I keep going to British Columbia where I can get foods I like, so I'm not progressing. It's been pretty easy so far. I'm lifting weights too and doing some sit ups, not alot, just to be toned. If you count calories, you can eat practically anything as long as you are aware of how many calories you are taking in per day if you are dieting that way. I've been enjoying finding great tasting meals for about 1,200-1,300 calories a day. 100 calories are for during the day where I eat a lettuce wedge w/low cal dressing and then I save the rest of my calories to have a normal dinner. For instance, you can have a cup of soup for lunch and a turkey sandwich w/bacon/low fat mayo and lettuce for dinner w/a side of veggies and be within 1,200 calories for the day. Hummus is a great meal to have. A whole can of chick peas that you make into hummus w/1&1/2 pitas with it is about 800 calories if you only use 1 tsp of tahini paste which is high in calories. The pitas are 180 calories a piece. You will be so full from eating that for dinner and it's very healthy for you too!” 4:01:37 PM 1/18/06 “Surgery helps woman drop 450 pounds After turning her life around, Connie Jackson tells her story in book, creates Web site to help others By SAMEH FAHMY Staff Writer Connie Jackson of Joelton is quite busy these days. "The phone just does not stop ringing," she says, just after getting off the phone with the co-author of her first book. Jackson's e-mail inbox had 60 or so new messages from people who had learned about her through her Web site, ConnieJackson.net. The night before, she had more than 25,000 people visit her site after she spoke on a program hosted by motivational speaker Tony Robbins. Another 20,000 visited her site the next day.... http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060120/FEATURES01/601200369” 8:12:31 AM 1/20/06 “Considering what I weighed when I finished my hike, she lost three of me.” 8:20:33 AM 1/20/06 “Looks like I may have finally lost a pound this year. I weigh every day, then take an average for the week. Actually, I may have lost 2 pounds. Still have 6 or 7 to go....” 8:27:05 AM 1/20/06 “Yes, it's 2 - woo hoo!” 10:30:38 AM 1/20/06 “A 2 pound a week weight loss is good. It's good to keep to a weight loss regimin where you watch what you eat. My husband tried missing meals and lost weight, but when you go back to eating those meals, you just gain it back, so you really should just cut back on what you eat at each meal.” 2:56:58 PM 1/20/06
