I think I am getting to old to mess around with my health, so who is with me this new year?” 11:13:26 PM 12/25/05 “lost 38# did not mean to though” 11:24:06 PM 12/25/05 “Well, I am with ya! Today I was at 25 lbs so far lost since October-here is to another 40 lbs in 2006. I toast a glass of water to you ;-)” 11:35:00 PM 12/25/05 “well I have till 12/31 so I raise a glass of wine to you :)” 11:38:37 PM 12/25/05 “I need to get back into a gym!” 7:41:21 AM 12/26/05 “I kept off most of the 30lbs I lost in 2004 and drop to my target when my training peaks. I'd like to drop a couple % body fat.” 7:58:37 AM 12/26/05 “Add me to the list.... man oh man....” 8:18:34 AM 12/26/05 “I'm starting to diet with the new year, but I won't check in on the list since I would find it to be too much pressure. I'll be eating more veggies, and no more mozzarella or cheese dishes. That is how I'm doing it. I'll excersize more, but that's mostly to stay toned. The best way to lose weight is not from excerise as far as I'm concerned. You have to cut back on food or change what you eat. That's the quickest way. The last I heard, you have to do an aerobic activity for at least 20 min. before you start burning fat. and that includes you're keeping your heartrate at a certain level, so it's important to use a machine that can track that. I do have a "step", so I may start up my step aerobics, and I'm buying some loose weights for curls and I already have a long bar for bench presses to stay toned.” 3:58:22 PM 12/26/05 “I thought mozzarella was one of the better cheeses?” 4:15:20 PM 12/26/05 “Spirit, I think all cheeses are high in calories for the small amount you eat as compared with other foods, and it's high in fat unless you get non-fat. I used skim mozzarella for my chicken parmesan for my Christmas dinner. It's 80 calories for 1/4 of a cup w/6 grams of fat. Cheddar is about 125 calories for 1/4 of a cup, so mozzarella can be lower in calories, but that's if you go skim or no fat where I'm not sure if you can buy cheddar cheese in low or no fat varieties.” 4:46:00 PM 12/26/05 “I'm needing to get back on track. In 2004 I lost 35 lbs and kept it off for over a year, but last fall I started gaining again and put most of it back on. I'll probably go back to Atkins, since that worked well for me before. I like real cheese too much to give it up. With Atkins I wasn't hungry all the time - and I lost weight. Biggest change will be getting back on the treadmill again. I was doing well with that for a while, but that didn't last long enough. I want to start our hike this year in good shape. I know I'll lose most of my fat when I start hiking, but I won't lose much weight. I want to start out without the excess I'm carrying now.” 5:56:47 PM 12/26/05 “Well I need to lose the 15 lbs that I put on over the last 2 years. I am ok'd to do some exercises, I'm still limited in what I can do though.” 6:29:33 PM 12/26/05 ““lost 38# did not mean to though” hunting accident?” 7:10:24 PM 12/26/05 “Hey ladies...if you want a reasonably healthy cheese, eat Swiss cheese. Not only is it many times very low in sodium, it is low in fat and calories! Try not to eat Cheddar, Jack, anything that melts easily ;-) lol! As for excercise, well, any exercise is better than none! I try to do things like parking out in BFE at the store so I have to walk, and purposefully walking the grocery store for 30 minutes ;-)” 7:28:22 PM 12/26/05 “sarbar1, you're right about good (fatty) cheese melting well. That fat makes it a better melting cheese, not like plastic, but the trick with those low cal cheeses is to cooking it lightly, really with all cheeses, so they don't lose their moisture. I know my health food store sells some kind of fake cheese. It may be tofu. I don't get it. I moved to WA and found only (mostly) low moisture part skim mozzarella, but I notice you don't see that in cheddar cheese. Those PNW people love their cheddar cheese. They're not screwing with that, lol:)” 7:39:05 PM 12/26/05 “Funny thing Sarbar, I park out in BFE so my car doesn't get bashed up by all the morons jockeying for a close parking space. It's really bad down here. I'm on the "need to lose weight" list for damn sure. I didn't gain anything, but what I have is moving around into worse places.” 8:02:46 PM 12/26/05 “treebait, many years ago, I parked my boyfriend's car out beyond where the other cars were parked in a grocery store parking lot. Came back to our vacation rental and the boyfriend says there's a dent on the car. I'm thinkng he's kidding, but low and behold, someone clocked the car!!! tree, get out and excersize (hike). If you don't lose weight, you'll still be in reasonably good shape. That is what will stop the giggling. Then work on eating less.” 8:20:18 PM 12/26/05 “30.5 lbs for me and did a 2 mile walk on the beach. i'm starting out with short walks and riding my bike for 1/2 hour.” 8:38:41 PM 12/26/05 “I think I gained 10 lbs just over the past 2 weeks. Ugghhh. Once I get back into a routine after the holidays, I'm going to get busy at the gym.” 8:40:29 PM 12/26/05 “Lol...LH...you ever visit the Tillamook Cheese factory in Tillamook, OR? Yeah..ain't no low cal treats there! Thing is, dang, cheddar is only good high fat ;-)” 9:10:08 PM 12/26/05 “I'm with you, mapleleaf! I was doing good until the holidays hit. Yesterday someone asked me what I got for Christmas. My answer: "10 pounds." Back in September I found out my blood glucose levels are a tad bit high and my chloesterol was awful, so I really starting watching what I ate. I lost 15 pounds. But like I said, then the holidays hit! :-( I will get back on track Jan. 4 (none of that New Year's resolutions stuff for me).” 10:22:45 PM 12/26/05 “sarbar1, funny you should mention the Tillamook Cheese Factory. On my plane rides back to and forth to NY from WA, I was served Tillamook Cheese w/an apple and crackers. I was never a cheddar cheese person in general, BUT I did take a mini vacation to the tiny fishing village of Garibaldi in Oregon this summer. You know what that means, visiting the Tillamook Cheese Factory which was on my agenda. I went to Cape Perpetua in Yachats and did some hiking along the ocean, then went up the mountainside to fantastic views of the OR coast. I did the 3 Capes Scenic Loop, hit the Heron Wine/Cheese Factory, they had great herb brie (bought some), and.....went a few times to the Tillamook Cheese Factory over the course of a few days. Hey, it was on our way while doing the 3 Capes Loop on another day. It was only 7-8 min. from my hotel. I took a look at the other people in front of me and did what they did which was to stick as many cheese samples on a toothpick as was possible. I loved that cheese curd that they called squeeky cheese and bought some of that too. I had a burger w/bacon there that was good and on another trip had some of their Tillamook ice cream or was it yogurt??? They serve both. The cheese factory was fun. Free cheese is fun, but not now that I'm dieting. It was a fun trip. We stopped at another winery too; I forget it's name. last edited: 12/27/05 8:00:54 PM” 7:59:46 PM 12/27/05 “OMG....speaking of loseing weight, a co-worker just offered me 5 diffrent kinds of homemade fudge!” 8:03:18 PM 12/27/05 “I don't know about your diet but I can have as much cheese as I want on mine, because it's low carb. I can have cottage cheese in moderation.” 8:03:19 PM 12/27/05 “Leofric, I can't do low carb. I only eat pasta dishes, that is pasta and beans or veggies. I just have to make smaller portions. I always stayed thin my whole life eating pasta. It's only when you overeat on anything that you gain weight. Carbs are not the enemy, overeating is, lol:)” 9:44:26 PM 12/27/05 “I lost 4 lbs yesterday. But that was due to a nasty stomach virus or food poisioning. Take your pick. (G says it was a raging case of mud butt. That describes it quite clearly.) But, I need to lose 10 lbs (ok, maybe less) to fit comfortably in my wedding dress. With the news that G's cholesterol is way too high, we are making changes in our diets to be much healthier. I've got 6 months to fit into a bikini.... last edited: 12/27/05 10:40:00 PM” 10:39:28 PM 12/27/05 “LH I agree on that!!! the atkins diet would put me in the hospital for sure as on that diet you eat everything that makes me sick- BLECH. Im only suppossed to eat lots of complex carbs and fruits and veggies. I can definiatly tell when I stray to the other stuff.....(can you say mud butt and vomit and sick for hours on end?) So I am trying to find a ballence that will still let me enjoy the food I like once in a while (like cheese)” 10:49:42 PM 12/27/05 “I am not on Atkins but another low-carb diet, the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, by Drs. Heller & Heller. Seeing as I've been maintaining my goal weight for 6 months now I'm not about to change a thing.” 10:59:51 PM 12/27/05 “I'm aiming for losing 8 pounds - that'll put me at a good racing weight for the year. Goal is to reach that in 8 weeks - first big race of the year is a 10-miler the first weekend in March. I actually think I didn't gain anything over the holidays. I made a point of not going for seconds, which was really hard because the food was soooooo good. Not much of a sweets eater, so only a chocolate or a piece of pie here and there.” 8:53:57 AM 12/28/05 “Leo...wish I could do a low carb diet-I have to live on a very low sodium diet..and yep, that doesn't coincide with low carb always. Most pasta is salt-free. I eat a lot of whole grains (read unprocessed or minimal), a ton of fruit and veggies, some meat (I cannot eat any that is processed) and some cheese and dairy. I eat soy products and nuts also. Basiclaly I eat out of bowls now to control my portions. It works-is a very healthy diet-keeps you regular if you get my drift. I do miss bread quite a bit..but unless I bake it myself, it is a sodium time bomb. With any diet, eating whole grains and fresh fruit and veggies is so important! It has to be a life changing diet, that you CAN do the rest of your life to work!! And it has to help with diseases and problems that come with aging-it can't be a fad diet that you will tire of in 2 years. Most everyone I know who has done a low carb diet has quit it after a year max. Not that it doesn't work, but not for the long haul. In America we need less processed foods and more natural meals!!! We are a country of being fat, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, etc-we need to be scared!” 10:51:09 AM 12/28/05 “I have to gain the weight back I just lost after being sick. EEEE gads!” 11:41:01 AM 12/28/05 “Hey Wounded Knee, I got 45 lbs you can have ;-)” 11:50:08 AM 12/28/05 “My mother for many years has been very sensitive to sodium, and has had to prepare from scratch most of her foods from many years. It used to be that the exertion of backpacking meant that she could eat salty foods on the trail, but her sensitivity has increased over time. My sister also has shown signs of having the same condition. I don't know if my daughters will be affected at all or not.” 12:14:49 PM 12/28/05 “Want to be Asian thin? Eat like many Asians who eat a lot of fish and veggies with a little rice with each meal. Some Asians cook very thin slices of beef and wrap them in lettuce or some other type of green leaf, maybe cabbage w/rice. They also use very small dishes. It helps psychologically not to eat out of huge plates, especially if they don't have wide borders. I've always bought plates with wide borders, so the food goes in the center. This gal who is promoting her new "how to eat like Asians and live long" book said to put your fork down in between bites, so in other words, don't eat so fast. She didn't say why, but I've always heard it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to let you know you're full and by that time, you've already over eatten. So sloooow down!!!! What a concept, not shoveling food in your face without stopping, how unAmerican, lol:) last edited: 12/29/05 2:20:53 PM” 2:13:23 PM 12/29/05 “Wow! I just inhaled a big plate of leftover beef stroganoff, some celery and carrots, a banana, and a yogurt. BUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRPPPPP!!!!!!” 2:30:53 PM 12/29/05 “i'm probably gonna have to add myself to this list...my wife's pregnant but i'm the one eating for 2!!!...spring better get here fast” 2:34:43 PM 12/29/05 “Bowlder, I love beef stroganoff. I'm not a meat eater, but I love the noodles!!! thrify, make sure she uses cream on her belly so she doesn't get stretch marks. Palmers makes a anti-stretch mark cream though there may be better prescribed ones and don't forget to have her rub the cream on the bottom of her belly when she gets big. A friend forgot that part and got stretch marks there.” 2:47:59 PM 12/29/05 “she's already ahead of ya, but at the rate i'm gaining i'm gonna have to use some too last edited: 12/29/05 2:53:48 PM” 2:52:50 PM 12/29/05 Weight loss in 2006 “I think my biggest weight loss opportunity will be deciding on a new water filtration system. Right now I carry either a PUR Scout or PUR Hiker, 11 or 9 oz respectively, but I'm thinking about just going to the drops or something similar. After all, most of my water is high sierra, so it's not like it's a terribly contaminated source to begin with. In winter or spring when it's snow-melt run-off I don't filter anyway. Oh.... were you talking about something else? Sorry for the thread degradadtion :)” 3:00:22 PM 12/29/05 “Well, water contamination would be a great weight loss system..lol ;-) Just not pleasant :-D” 3:02:24 PM 12/29/05 “if you want to loose some serious weight wanderer just don't use anything for your water...you'll not only loose pack weight but then when you get the squirts from the water you'll loose body weight too...it's a win win” 3:04:40 PM 12/29/05 “2 bouts of diarrhea would take off my holiday and beginning winter weight! We have lots of streams and water sources in WA that can give you giardia, just let me at them, lol:)” 4:59:45 PM 12/29/05 “I finally rid my house of the last high calorie food, so I can start my diet full force for the new year. The last item was half a box of yellow cake mix. I went all out and made peanut butter hot fudge filled cupcakes with it. I had the hot fudge in the house too for when I made them the first time. Now may days will be filled with vanilla yogurt from Costco if I want something that tastes decadent. I like chocolate, but their vanilla yogurt tastes like you're eating frozen creamy heavy cream. I recommend it. It's about 300-350 calories for a roughly 16 ounce cup and only $1.36.” 7:55:13 PM 12/30/05 “High calorie fat stuff usually isnt an issue in my house since CMB doesnt eat sweets at all and eatting that kind of stuff makes me very ill and I dont budget that stuff into the grocery shopping money. for me mostly it will be more excersise as I have a mostly sit down job which I spend between 40-60 hours a week at. I have always had a slower matabolisem even growing up as a kid I was chubbier then all my brothers. I got tested for thyroid disease once and I was borderline but not bad enough to need treatment....Weightloss wont be easy but I feel so much better when I am thinner and that alone will be worth the hard work.” 10:26:47 PM 12/30/05 “my pants aren't any tighter after Christmas and 4 days of interviewing. That is good news.” 10:53:42 PM 12/30/05 “I really need to set down a program for myself this time and stick to it. I'm definitely getting a good workout this week! Lots of cardio and muscle work, lol!” 10:32:11 AM 12/31/05 “I'm concentrating on portion size. I've already gotten rid of the "cottage cheese" look on my butt and thighs, and I think I can do a whole lot more if I just don't overeat. I'm not going to go so crazy with eating the "right" foods, just watch how much I stuff in my face.” 3:20:55 PM 12/31/05 “Smiley, same here. I already eat a good diet, no candy, ice cream, chips, fried foods, so all I have to do is portion control, but I'll aim to eat foods that I don't tend to over eat on to make it easier.” 5:57:31 PM 12/31/05 “ok Day 1... I have a goal and I am going to stick to it. I find that works the best for me. I want to really be in better shape for my up coming trip. I find what gets me is I do not eat all day nor drink and then by dinner i am very hungry and tired. so i eat and go right to bed. no more. i will drink lots of water and eat at least a nice light lunch. after dinner i will take a walk around the park. it is a two mile loop. stair climber in the morning and walk after dinner. sounds good!!!” 9:29:56 AM 1/03/06 “Lipstick... Not all Asians are thin.... LOL I just found a free website called "www.peertrainer.com". You form groups of 4 and encourage each other about your weight loss...I never paid too much attention to calories until I started to do a food diary--- that can totally take you off guard and help you to become aware of what goes in your mouth! The nice thing is that within each group, your comments to other group members remain "private", so that you can encourage each other without having to announce every little detail to the world... :-) We'll see how helpful it is to my goal of being a healthier person for 2006! One of my resolutions is to pack more lunches and to eat out less.... hopefully, that will not only save calories, it will also save money as well!” 9:49:58 AM 1/03/06
