Or, the Original Soup Man, Al Yeganeh
So, the Seinfeld inspired "Soup Nazi" opened a place down the block here on 42nd Street. I have been meaning to try this stuff. Now, It goes against my grain to pay this much for a lousy bowl of soup. However, I am feeling pretty crappy with some sort of bug, so I figured today was a good day to finally try it.

Now, I make some pretty good soups myself. Also, I know of some restaurants and take out places that make awesome soup. I also have tasted some pretty good stuff made by friends.

So, I decided to purchase a bowl of their Clam Chowder. They didn't have a New England today, so I tried the Manhattan style. Now, I figure that, of allthe good soups I have tasted, I would expect that this would have to truly be a step above and beyond...

...especially since a bowl of this stuff set me back $9.70!

Verdict: I gotta say, this stuff is GOOOOD!!!Yeah, it's definitely hearty, made with great ingredients, not a trace of being watered down, and tasty through every bite. Man, this stuff is fine! And, no one said, "no soup for you---one year!"

At $9.70 it should be, but then I guess that's pretty typical prices for DC lunches too.

Well $6-7 is about the best you can do. Easy to pay that for a sandwich - hitting the $10 mark is pretty easy.

The fact that it's cost prohibitive will prevent this from becoming a bad habit!

I usually have soup at the Admin Bldg cafeteria for $2.62.

The .666666666 mile walk and light lunch has been a good habit for going on four years.

They make a pretty good Italian Wedding Soup now and then......it's all made on location.

They had a seafood chowder a few times that was dang good!!

My expensive grocery store sells hot soup for $3.59 for a medium sized cup. They make a great potato and leek.

Another regular grocery store sells soups now too and makes a great baked potato soup for a bit less. I was told they came from large cans, and the expensive stores soups came from mixes.

Some people think fresh soup means home made soup, but surprise, it doesn't.

42nd Street has become a real big tourist area now that they got rid of the hookers and porno shops, etc., so I can see a store charging those high prices and they are high no matter how good the soup is.

My idea of a good bowl of soup is Vietnamese Pho beef noodle soup. Used to go out with the coworkers once a week. $5 got you a HUGE big bowl. I eat it with plenty of sriracha and hoisin sauce. Really opens up the sinuses, I always figured it was good for what ails ya. We had a couple of Vietnamese folk in the department who introduced us to it. I rather miss it, it's hard to find where I'm at these days.

Leofric1, they serve pho noodles with a side of basil and cream puffs where I went.

I have this one place in WA called "What The Pho". To those not in the know, Pho is pronounced "FA", so it's called What the FA?

Yeah, those Pho places are very inexpensive. We have a ton of them in WA state.

I was told that Asian places will use oyster sauce in their food which you may not realize, so now I don't want to eat Asian food which I was never really fond of except for chicken & broccoli, fried rice and lo mein.

Katz is good for soup? Maybe matzo ball soup which I love. You can't get good matzo ball soup in Washington State. There is some secret to making them come out good if you make them yourself, some kind of Jewish magic.

It's just a pasta ball in a way, made from matzo meal, oil and egg, then cooked in chicken soup. I think that's it. I haven't made it in a long time. I did, however, get some from my nearby Kosher deli when I visited NY this past July along with knishes. People in WA don't know what knishes are!!!

Looked up matzo ball soup recipes, got to thinking about it. Found some recipes have you make soft peaks out of the egg whites, so that may be the answer to lighter matzo balls.

I pretty good site to find recipes is www.cooks.com but you have to have a reasonably good idea of what a good recipe is to begin with for whatever you want to cook or they will have you making lasagna with cottage cheese instead of ricotta and other odd things. Each recipe they list for some dish is very different from the next person's ingredients for the same recipe.

Also, that tv food network site is good for recipes that they cook on their shows so it's somewhat limiting. Their site is:

Some of the best pastrami you'll ever sink yer teeth into!

Lippy, you are right about 42nd ST. Especially here on the east side. It's a very expensive area. Thus, I bring my lunch every day. As long as I have a fridge and a microwave, I have a good hot lunch of my own delicious cooking daily! But, the soup nazi's prices are not a result of this area. He was reputed to be expensive in the original location up town, too. So, I knew it was going to cost me when I walked into there.

Anyhow, I brought the other half of it home for Maple last night. I wanted her to taste it and see if she thought it was a good as I did. She concurred and wants more! I can see this becoming a bad habit!

But, I must say, as pricey as it is, it really fills you up! Looks like it's becoming a chain now, also. So, look for it in your home state, too.

Well, the Soup Nazi is now at my local (UN)friendly mall. There was not a whole lot of selection, and besides, I was in the mood for some ersatz tacos (made from aging chihuahuas, no doubt). I will check it out another time.
