Has anyone ever had the chance to venture into this area? My GF's father has been going up there for 20 years and tells me it stands apart from anything he has ever experienced.

I am not looking for anything specific on it. I guess I am trying to gauge the popularity of the place. From what he told me is very well known now. Just trying to find an unknown escpace; vein, but eh thats ok.

Simer will probably jump on this thread. He's a guide up there in the BWCA. If you like that and want fewer people, try Quetico (further north and fewer people) or even better yet, Woodland Caribou Provincial Park (even further north and even fewer people).

I can tell by your rapid replies that you are already sucked into the vortex of TrailTalk. BTW, there's no escape from here. And it's addicting as hell.

By Trail Talk, you mean conversations about the outdoors?

Two reasons I will like this place-

1) Not a lot of people in the Coast Guard get into the outdoors as I like to

2) Not a lot of PEOPLE that I know get into the outdoors as I like to.

So yeah, I probably will like this place.

That's still a dream trip for me, but I think both Nigal and Wounded Knee have been there too. Look for their 2 cents tomorrow.

Coast Guard in Wisconsin___shades of snake eyes!

I used to frequently the BWCA and other border lakes. But that was more than 30 years ago. Now they have lots of new rules and a reservations system for the BWCA.

Been up there about a half dozen time, the last one of which was a 19 day 250 mile canoe trip from International Falls, Mn. southeast along the Canadian Border to McFarland Lake near Lake Superior last September through October.

Velcom...muah-ha-ha-ha-ha....
Well, I've not been to the BWCA as I am cheap, kinda a spur-of-the-moment person and don't like crowds...for this reason I go up to Voyageur's National Park..

for another thing, it's only a 3 hour drive from where I live in Wisconsin. Lots don't like it because it's open to motor boats and pontoon boats but, it's huge and easy to find a quiet spot..I spent a week up there on a solo kayaking trip and want to do it again...

contact Wade Watson and his wife, Nicole. She works for the park and he is an outfitter who has lived up there all his life and knows it very well. He not only rents kayaks but will help anyone plan a great trip.

Since you're in Wisconsin, may I suggest going to Canocopia in March. There you can meet a lot of us and learn just what the area has to offer...it's a great resource!

I live about 170 miles south of the Boundary Waters and have a few relatives living outside (Ely). It's a better place to hike than float because very few hike there. Took a hike with Simer there a couple of years ago and we never saw anyone during the 4 days. I was pretty impressed and plan to spend time there and on the SHT this summer. Oh, yeah, I live in NW Wisconsin and spent some time in the Coast Guard.

I once danced the tango with a bear up in the Quetico.

You danced with Tango and a Bear up in Quetico? Which was scarier?
Nimblefoot

Ha! I would have rather danced with Tango, not the bear. Two Korean women with 4 little children were waking up on the first day of a 15 day paddle when a bear entered their campsite while they were cooking breakfast.

They paddled to the island we were camped on, freaked out speaking no english. From their reaction, we figured it out pretty quick that they got a visit from a large animal from and because they had no gear in their canoes.

They pointed us toward their site and we paddled over to find the bear (about the size of a great dane) eating pancakes right out of the stove that was still on.

I moved in behind it to flush it one direction, but it didn't want to move. I wanted to get to the stove because it was sitting near a pile of pine cones. I knew if the bear knocked the stove over, the entire are would go up faster than ever.

After I saw that my friends had gathered up the gear, I made a dash for the stove. The bear zig zaged toward me, I took cover behind a large boulder, he went to one side and I ran around the other side grabbing the lit stove in stride.

Mission Accomplished!
