Up and hit the shelter and then back down.

I have crampons, and a 10 degree bag. I want to get a weekend with ice and snow!!

“I would definitely consider going the 27th, but you are no longer allowed to have campfires at that shelter. First shelter to ban campfires in the Smokies. I would love the snow and ice, but dam - no fire!!! They bricked up the chimney. I hiked up Alum Cave in January the other year and didn't have crampons, but wished I had them. I crawled and slithered...with my Dad and neighbours!!! Have fun!”

“if you can find wood up there with snow on the ground...more power to you...i didn't see a lick the last 2 times i was there. and the chimney was so full of holes, it's probably best they bricked it so someone didn't die of smoke inhalation.
And if it's cold enough, screw getting cold fiddling with a small fire..hit the down sack and crash!!”
