wahoo!
Jenson Bissell was named the new director of BSP today. I'm glad someone was selected who knows Maine and the park.

wasnt the old bsp director someone that really hated thru-hikers?

Why would you think that?
He created "The Birches" which is the lean-to and tent area especially for thru hikers. He was against continuing the IAT from Baxter Peak because of the pressure it would put on the park.

we already had an area especially for us at katahdin stream, with a nice view of the mountain. the birches has zero view whatsoever. from talking to other hikers, i got the impression that it was done to get us smelly thrus out of the way, rather than give us a place of our own. supposedly hes made some comments publicly which were unaccomadating. but im only going on what others said. i just know that some other hikers were upset, i dont know the whole story.

I didn't know there was ever a place at Katahdin Stream specially reserved for thru hikers. Where was it?

The Birches was created to get the thru hikers away from Daicey Pond campground which is managed differently than the other campgrounds. Over the years, Daicey has either not wanted the smelly thru hikers, or agreed to tolerate them, and the AT is re routed accordingly. The Birches is a permanent solution to that, also solved the issue of accomodating the thru hikers without too much hassle.

Why would smelly thru hikers want to be exposed to soapy car campers and campground noise?

Twigeater, you have a good feeling for this new guy? Has he said anything along what he plans to do or to continue to maintain the park?

Just so long as we get to visit in the winter.....

Could be like in MN. When the new parks commissioner (or was it head DNR commissioner?) came here from Utah, long-worked-on plans to set up a policy and plans to allow geocaching in state parks went belly up. Thanks new guy.

"The Birches was created to get the thru hikers away from Daicey Pond campground which is managed differently than the other campgrounds"

actually, katahdin stream campground was the place they put us for awhile after daicy pond, but before the birches, at least according to the books ive read and the people ive talked to. i dont know where exactly.

Jensen was the logical choice imo monkeyboy.
I believe they got 70 applicants from all over the world.
I am curious if he'll continue with Buzz's "wilder within" plan, and the tearing down of buildings.

Yeah crash, they put you in Katahdin stream CG but they've done that before - I was just asking where the special place was you were referring to. I thought they were just put in with the general population...
LOL...

I missed the fund raising speech thing...

Part of the deal is a trade of Public Lands - I'm wondering what will be traded...current lands or new lands.
