It's been a tough week... my gear was s tolen :(View Messages“Some jerk broke into my camper shell on my truck and took 3 Rubbermaid tubs. In one I kept car repair/safety stuff like jumper cables, etc. In the 2nd one I had food. And in the third I had about $600 worth of backpacking and camping gear :( Not to mention it's probably going to be at least $100 to fix or replace my camper shell door. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to me :p” 3:14:15 PM 12/29/05 “Wow that sucks. I hope they find the person who did it, or a mountain lion eats them or something.” 3:16:11 PM 12/29/05 “wow that sucks...sorry bout that...do you have insurance and will the help?” 3:16:32 PM 12/29/05 “Sorry to hear this! I have a 20 degree Kelty bag that you can have. Let me know if you are interested.” 3:18:18 PM 12/29/05 “That's a tough break. Where and when did it happen? last edited: 12/29/05 3:19:56 PM” 3:18:27 PM 12/29/05 “%^#@, I am sorry. My vehicle was broken into about 2 weeks ago, so I can relate. In my case, I determined it wasn't worth it to file a claim so I had to "eat" the costs to repair / replace. Fortunately, I didn't have any of my BP gear in it at the time (whew!) Hope you make out better!” 3:25:22 PM 12/29/05 “WK - thanks for the offer, fortunately I still have my sleeping bag. They stole my 2 stoves, numerous pots and mugs and utensils, headlamps, etc. All the little things! It either happened when I was parked at my boyfriend's house in Bakersfield or the next day after I came home. Probably in Bakersfield, my neighborhood is a lot quieter and nicer than his, though you never know...” 3:25:30 PM 12/29/05 “Yeah, I have car insurance, but my deductible probably won't make it worth the effort.” 3:26:21 PM 12/29/05 “I was mountain biking at Tuskeegee one day and the vandals broke two windows in my truck to get a $20 portable CD player. $420 in windows for a stupid CD player. I can feel your pain.” 3:28:30 PM 12/29/05 “I have a Peak One stove you can have. It looks like the one below ![]() I know it still works and would be glad to send it to you.” 3:29:12 PM 12/29/05 “i had about 800 dollars worth of gear stolen from my wrecked car a couple years ago at RRG. i was so fukcing mad at the world, i half-considered going back and leaving my car parked in the woods, with my gear as bait laying out temptingly, with me hiding behind a tree to jump up and beat the sht out of anyone who came along and tried to fck with it, just to make myself feel better. its a good thing im not a violent person, cuz i probably would have carried it thru before i came to my senses. i have extras of almost everything. let me know if you need anything” 3:29:50 PM 12/29/05 “Plus, your rates may go up if you claim these losses.” 3:30:02 PM 12/29/05 “You guys are too nice :) I may take you up on your offers... I have a bid in on a stove on ebay right now. Next up I will be looking for a headlamp, a pot, and a Leatherman. Something like this makes you realize what gear it is that you really need.” 3:36:06 PM 12/29/05 “I remember hiking with you just after that happenend Scott! Remember that huge tent you borrowed from someone!” 3:36:07 PM 12/29/05 “rates aren't usually effected by theft unless it's high dollar or a reoccurring problem...sounds like you're not exactly sure what your deductible is, it might be worth it just to look into it” 3:36:11 PM 12/29/05 “Hey, there are lot's of us with stuff that we never use.” 3:36:52 PM 12/29/05 “I may have one of the worlds largest collection of backpacking pots and pans, do you prefer aluminum, teflon coated aluminum ,hard anodized aluminum, stainless steel, or titanium? I also have a couple of extra multitools. last edited: 12/29/05 4:09:35 PM” 4:04:19 PM 12/29/05 “Sequoia, if you can find the time, why don't you make some sort of list of everything lost you'd like replaced....then, give us all gear junkies a chance to offer to replace it...I also, as you know very well, have tons of stuff...much of it packed away unused....and, do it on the "other side" too...I think that it just absolutely sucks...you weren't even at a trailhead! probably some pimply little hopheads who were stoned and stupid...” 4:15:32 PM 12/29/05 “that's what's great about being the "thriftyhiker"...if someone steels my alcohol stove, no wup, i'll just make a new one...my tent turns up missing, i'll just get another one on ebay for $35 LOL i'd give ya gear too but i think i only have 1 of everything and most of the stuff i've got people don't want anyway” 4:21:19 PM 12/29/05 “Let me know if you need anything that I could help you with, ok? I have an extra daypack (technical mtnering) if you need one!!” 4:27:57 PM 12/29/05 “Hmmmm. Wasn't that food tub the one WITH THE LOBSTER, PRIME RIB, REALLY OLD WINES in it. And didn't you have a FULL SET OF REALLY GOOD TOOLS in the 2nd tub. And how about the 3rd tub? I could have sworn you were saying how you had several FOUR SEASON ULTRALIGHT TENTS, -20 GOOSE DOWN CUSTOM SLEEPING BAGS, AND YOUR FAVORITE 2 PAIR OF HIKING BOOTS. Hmmm. Might be worth it to check on that deductible after all.... j/k - sorry to hear about the break-in; that sucks!” 5:49:35 PM 12/29/05 “Bear, email me your address and I'll send you a leatherman, used. Actually I have two, the big one and the next size smaller, you can have either.” 6:11:15 PM 12/29/05 “This thread shows how amazing TT'rs really are. I love you guys! Bearcrossing, please post a list. I'd be happy to help.” 7:30:17 PM 12/29/05 “Tango, you beat me to it! That's why I love coming here. You guys are awesome. BearCrossing, sorry to hear about the theft---truly a bummer. I'm not sure what I can provide because my gear list is probably smaller than what you have left, lol, but if I think of anything, I'll let you know.” 8:01:41 PM 12/29/05 “BearCr... Lousy awful dreadful feeling and that does not take into account the need to get the shell fixed too. Sorry to hear it. My car was broken into in a motel parking lot in Bakersfield a few years back.. Lousy. They left our sleeping bags in the back seat all spread out.. like we had them... for airing out after a trip... it was morning and pack up time before we noticed the gear beneath was gone. cooking stuff, food, lights, etc. They left behind their screwdriver and a few odds and ends, so they must have been interupted. Cops were unhelpful. Motel people were annoyed... at US not at theft.... we left REALLY mad at the world. The folks at this forum are astounding with their support. I have no surplus gear to offer right now. Just moral support and condolences.” 8:19:31 PM 12/29/05 “Wow, thanks, you guys are amazing, all of you are way too kind and generous... Please don't even think of giving me anything that you still use or can sell or whatever! I didn't mean to post this as a pity case or whatever. But I do appreciate the kind thoughts and generosity. This is what was in the gear tub: Geko 301 GPS (Yikes... well, I bought the darn thing 2 years ago and still haven't really learned how to use it :p So it was an expensive thing to lose but I probably wouldn't feel the need to replace it anytime soon) Leatherman Squirt w/ pliers Trail drop (watch+digital compass) Regular old fashioned compass PT Aurora Headlamp and EOS Headlamp Pack cover Vaude Hot Rod Stove Another Primus canister stove (don't remember the model name) 3-4 fuel canisters GSI hard anodized 5 piece cookware set Ti kettle Ti spork Lexan spork various other Lexan utensils Orikaso dish various other plastic dishes OR Kitchen kit small Critter Sack Pack towel First Aid kit Repair kit Battery lantern And countless small stuff: small Nalgene containers, 4-5 stuff sacks, 4-5 handwarmers and toe warmers, Sunscreen and Bug Spray, Bandannas, Mosquito Head Net, space blanket, bear bell, hand sanitizer, cards and Pass the Pigs games, waterproof matches, lighters, batteries, rope, windscreen The hardest to lose was my hiking journal and sketch pad that I've had since 1998 :( Those are, unfortunately, irreplacable...” 9:22:30 PM 12/29/05 “And I don't even know most of you! You're gonna make me cry...” 9:35:54 PM 12/29/05 “BC, ygm. don't know if it helps you feel better, but i bet this will all work out in the end. the anger and sadness you feel from the theft will be replaced with the thankfulness and joy you feel from having your gear replaced by TT "strangers" other than your trail journal (the real loss here IMO), i bet things will come out just fine in the end.” 9:56:58 PM 12/29/05 “REeally sorry to hear. I live in the DC area so I'm used to people being s#*theads.” 10:34:05 PM 12/29/05 “We can't replace the trail journal, but somehow I bet you've either related the stories or written them somewhere else or use even your memories,, not the same, I know, but a bit of what was lost can be recovered. The rest we TTr's and other trail friends will replace, I'm sure and now is a good opportunity to look at new ideas and equipment. I have to admit most of my stuff is homemade or found "cheaply",, like all swamp yankee's, my greatest source of income is low overhead,, LOL.” 10:37:19 PM 12/29/05 “Sorry to hear. Years ago someone broke into a borrowed car. Car insurance may not cover the stuff, but home owners/renters insurance may cover part of it.” 10:44:00 PM 12/29/05 “call binks for anything that someone can't give to you. i guarantee if you tell him what happened and you're a tt'er he'll treat you really good.” 11:34:19 PM 12/29/05 “If it ever stops snowing (heavy, wet stuff) so I can get to my Rubbermaid gear containers I think I have some extra stuff in there you might find useful...and, I have an old Magellan GSP that's EASY to use and not large or heavy that might work for you...I'll see if I can find the directions and let you know more about it. And, I KNOW I have a Brasslight stove you can have...I bought them when Aaron discontinued them...wanna try an alcohol stove? It's free...LOL.... Bummer about the Critter Sack...those, as you know full well, are no longer available... I know I have lots of extra stuff listed above that you can use...I have 2 ti-sporks, for example...for sure a Sunato compass...I know I have 2 of those...not the expensive ones...just the usual, flat one..the Silva Polaris 177 I wish I could get to my gear outside but, as long as it's snowing, I can't... last edited: 12/30/05 7:50:08 AM” 7:43:42 AM 12/30/05 “sorry about your loss, I had a radio stolen out of my car some years ago so I know how you feel.” 7:47:45 AM 12/30/05 “I know that somewhere I have what I think is a ti Snowpeak cookset that you can have...” 7:54:31 AM 12/30/05 “I'll take care of the Leatherman and Compass, folks. Bear, I printed off your list so I'll get the Squirt w/pliers for ya, and I have a Silva compass I never use. last edited: 12/30/05 8:07:50 AM” 8:06:19 AM 12/30/05 “I'm sorry I don't have any extras of that stuff. I do have extra platys 2 or 3 liters. Their yours if you want them. Wow I'm not a gear hound!” 8:15:12 AM 12/30/05 “tango = loser” 8:19:58 AM 12/30/05 “Sacco, what you gonna donate?? You turd. lol last edited: 12/30/05 9:11:22 AM” 9:10:34 AM 12/30/05 “dunno. i'll be diggin into the back of gear closet like a gopher this weekend to see what i can find” 10:19:38 AM 12/30/05 “Sorry to hear about the break-in. :-( Thinkbubelz & I had a car broken into while in Philadelphia in 1998. We felt so violated... Thinkbubelz' brother had passed away a few months before and the thieves stole his brother's jacket. Irreplaceable--(we didn't care about anything else, but it is hard to accept it when something of sentimental value is snatched away from you.) Unfortunately, we are still pretty new to backpacking, so we don't have much extra right now... I hope they find the people who took your things!!! I guess crooks never have any sense, or they wouldn't be out stealing stuff.... (Another time, we had our car broken into and the only thing they stole was the little cigarette ash holder with about $2 of change!)” 10:38:09 AM 12/30/05 “I've got the GSI cookset I can send.” 10:39:24 AM 12/30/05 “Wow BC! I'm really sorry, I know how stressful that can be, and of all times for this to happen too, around the holidays! I dont have any extra gear, but I would be more than happy to send you little stuff, like the toe warmers, matches/lighter, sunscreen....stuff like that. BTW, whats the pass the pigs game???” 10:45:52 AM 12/30/05 “BTW, you dont have an email listed....” 10:48:40 AM 12/30/05 Whisterlite Stove “BC, sorry to hear about your loss. I have Whisperlite stove and two fuel bottles if you need.” 10:56:10 AM 12/30/05 “Y'all are great, very generous :) rangertarol at yahoo dot com Oh, Pass the Pigs... It's a game where the pigs are dice. The pigs have appeared in a couple of my trip reports, lol http://www.tarol.com/domeland.html” 2:56:04 PM 12/30/05 “Pinkbubelz, yeah, my sketch pad was the hardest thing to lose. The rest is just stuff, but I had been sketching in that for almost 8 years now... And my biggest irk about somebody stealing my gear tub was they probably didn't even know what half of what was in it was :p Only a backpacker would know what most of it was for. The person probably ended up throwing most of it away :( My boyfriend thinks it was probably some kids. They did a number on my camper shell door, they wrenched and bent up the entire bottom of it. An experienced thief probably would've found an easier way in...” 3:04:12 PM 12/30/05 “For the folks who have offered to give me your extra gear, you are too cool, thank you from the bottom of my heart :) I will reimburse you shipping costs. And please let me know if I can do anything for you! Remember, I have an "in" with a couple of land management agencies... I can help you with maps or find out regulations or to plan out camping trips!” 4:22:31 PM 12/30/05 “Been out backpacking & Christmasing, so missed this thread. Sucks big time, BC! Got any interest in an 'Pepsi' type alcohol stove?” 11:42:56 PM 1/01/06 “reading through this thread is getting a little confusing to me. it seems lots of people have offered pots and pans. and stoves.leatherman. compass... i'm sending a headlamp and a stuff sack. STAT.” 11:58:30 AM 1/02/06
