Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl
I'm just curious. Does anyone know if this is as good and principled a business as it seems? I met the President (Dan Cathy) and heard him speak once and was very impressed that a fast food company really lived by its principles, even ones that cost it profits (not only that, but he gave me a card for a free sandwich, as well as one of those little cows with a "Eat mor Chikin" sign).

Now, "Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl" doesn't have a great ring to it (and it was awfully one sided this year) - but I can't hold this against them.

My son loves to eat there. I have once. They seem to be for real, but that is not an "inside" observation.

That's my outside observation, too. For me, the fact that they close on Sundays and pass up all that business adds to their credibility.

I don't know how principled they are, but their food sucks. I guess principle is more important than taste for some people.

Sheeze, what a name dropper.

LOL@bacpac!

It was the bowl game that had me thinking about them. Their nearest place is 7 miles from here.

I was also thinking about a company whose corporate practices are really horrible (I'll save that rant for fuego) and I think its a good story when a business gives a high priority to its principles.

I think I mentioned one of the Katrina threads that I thought Orek Vaccum Cleaners and CVS had both been exemplary corporate citizens in the wake of the Hurricane. I do hope to spend more of my time in 2006 pointing to what is good and right in the world.

Pedxing, hopefully I can follow your lead and look for the good things and overlook the not so good things.

From what I know about chickfilA, they are for real.

Their food was pretty good the one time I went there. They have several different types of Chicken to choose from, fried and grilled!

We have one in the food court of the hospital where I work. I take a look at the cafeteria menu for the day, and if nothing looks good then I'll get a chicken sandwich. Mooooo!

I know that atleast in the south, everyone does believe in the reputation of the company. I don't think the "principals" of the company are just marketing hype.

They're all over the south and do walk the walk. I wish I could remember the quote on their placemats I read last week about why they're closed on Sundays. Soemthing like, "Our workers work hard and we believe they should have a day of rest to worship how and if they choose and spend time with family."

Awe! Man I'm gonna miss ya! There's no way everyone here will let ya get away with a bunch of positive talk. If it's not about the world ending they don't wanna hear it! LOL! Chick-fil-a is a christian company and they do seem to live by that.

Hey! They should make one of those legendary humongous sandwiches that if ya eat the whole thing you get your picture on the wall and make for the Jews only. They could make it kosher and call it something like "The Christ Killer". And if ya fail to eat the whole thing you have to convert or fall on a sword.

I didn't say I was going to overlook the negative, or not point it out and name it. I just think it's too easy to get worked up about negative things, and too easy not to appreciate the abundant good in the world.

My grandfather was sad to see firms he did business with opening on Sunday. He tried to shop only at places that had a Sabbath (I think Jewish places that closed for their Sabbath were O.K. by him). Overall, I think its a loss - which might be hypocritical since I shop Sundays and work every other Sunday (although work does involve dealing with health emergencies).

My life is good and I consider myself to be very lucky.

I was just kidding about the being positive thing Ped. My resolution is to not cuss as much (0% on TT and as little as possible in real life).

The interesting thing Ped is that not only is Sunday not the Sabbath but non Jews are not held to keep the Sabbath. In fact we are forbidden from keeping the Sabbath. I never understood why Christian leaders would say Christians are not bound to the law but then turn right around legislate a day or rest?

Phil - I'm avoiding calling things a resolution.

Nigal - The hsitory of how the Sabbath changed is interesting to me. I think having a Sabbath is a wonderfully pro-family and pro-human thing.

I'd like to set my time up better to avoid working sundays. I like having the day to chill after church, eat a good meal maybe a dayhike. If there were a chick-fil-a I might even eat there.

I'd quite happily go back to virtually nothing being open on a Sunday. It was like that in the UK until I was in my teens and it's still like that in France. It's good to have at least one day a week where you can't do all the normal consumer crap.

Remember - that's "more time." I'm not turning into Polyanna's twin brother here.

That said, there is much to praise in this world. Maybe I'm under the influence of the Church with it's huge sign that I see outside my window. The community of that church is a fine one - a real blessing for the larger community. My Street is tiny - about 15 houses total and we have two churches, one kingdom hall and a Hebrew/Bible study program on the street. 4 Institutions, each with it's own version of the Judeo-Christian tradition. They are all good neighbors, but its the Baptist Church (and a Southern Baptist one, at that) that makes the strongest and most powerful impact on the neighborhood. It's full of good people, with a fine charismatic young minister. He performed our marriage ceremony 1 1/2 years ago.

I found out that my uncle, who lives in an impoverished part of Virginia, goes to a church that decided they would rather do without a paid pastor. They let the pastor go, sold their big church, rented a small space big enough for services and stuck all the money in an account to grow. The elders take turns leading the services on Sundays and they use the money to help the poor in their area. My niece, who also goes there, is a teacher and she sees some of the kids who have to go without. The church put her name on the accounts and she has written many, many checks to buy children some new shoes, pay their medical bills, pay for their medications, buy them new school supplies, ect.

I wonder if I could ever talk the mega-church down the road who spent $250,000 on a big Jesus statue to do this?

Nigal is slipping to the dark side. Telling people how to spend their money.

I think Bacpac misses the distinction between persuasion and coercion, between taking a moral stance and advocating government coercion. I'd definitely say the Church has every right to spend its money they way it wants to and if it raised the money for the statue, they even have an obligation to do it.

I'd love to hear the discussion where Nigal brings up that possibility. I wonder if the Church leaders would raise the story of the woman John refers to as Mary of Bethany. I sometimes wonder about the boundary line between iconography and idolatry. I think it raises deep and interesting issues (Who is being glorified by such a statue?)

Oh sure they can spend their money however they want. It doesn’t make them look good but it’s their money. The statue is actually quite creepy IMHO. "Help me! I'm sinking in this damn lake!!"

I just have to wonder how many poor people could have been helped with that much cash?
