Why is there always a "Porcupine Rige"?

I was just looking at a map of Glacier Park. There is always a Porcupine something at every park you visit. What do you think the are the top 5 most common names in parks?

On second thought, what is the silliest ridge or lake name you have heard of?

There's a Flattop Mtn in Rocky Mtn NP and in Glacier NP. There's a Flattop Mtn in CO outside of the park too.

Seems to be a lot of 'Dead Horse' places -- I guess because a lot of horses died on extreme terrain.

If I only had a dime for every "Camelback Mountain" I have hiked, I think I could retire. Same goes for paddling any lake named "Crooked" or "Long".

Just proves that people who first name place don't have a lot of imagination, names stick, and few if any bother changing them.

A long skinny lake in Jackson Hole that used to be called 'Beaver Dick Lake' and is now called 'String Lake'

There must be 25 Bass Lakes just in Washburn County, Wisconsin. Across the road from me is lower Twin Lake, to the north is upper Twin Lake and to the west is still another...Twin Lake. Fraternal only.

Sheesh, I was gonna mention Lost Lake (all over) and in South Dakota there are two Hell Canyons in the Hell Canyon Ranger District at Custer (one is by Jewel Cave).

I like these South Dakota names and this is probably the one time you can say such things and get by with it, LOL: Squaw Humper and Little Squaw Humper Creeks. And why is there inevitably a "Negro" something or other? Like, isn't it Negro Bill Canyon in Utah?

Oops, I see Blindman Table on the Pine Ridge Reservation map, in the Badlands near Red Shirt.

Bear Creek, Cub Creek, Rock Creek, Bridalveil Falls, Horsetail Falls, Deer Creek, Pine Creek, Silver Creek, (along with the already mentioned Twin Lakes, Lost Lake) and Lake of the Ruptured Spleen. Every wilderness has 'em. Every single one.

I know a few of those twin lakes up in Wisconsi n. I don't know what is twin about them. I can honesty say I have never caught a Bass in Bass lake. I have crossed a few Dead Horses passes and have never seen any. Where is the truth in advertising?

In the Adirondacks, there is a NippleTop, a NippleTop Mountain, and a Little NippleTop Mountain. All of which are within about a 10-mile radius of one another. Probably the most common name for a mountain (or Lake) in the park would have to be either Spruce or Buck. There are a lot of Bear Mountains and Wolf Pond/Lakes too.
