Friday Night Camping on Adena Trace Trail
I am planning on arriving around 3:30 PM on Friday, 3/17/2006. If anyone else is interested we could hike down the East side and camp by the lake or up in the pines. That would put us about 1 mile from the trailhead parking lot with a two minute drive to the meeting place.
See ya later.

Well, I've cleared the home calendar, and received permission from the wife, so unless something unforseen arises, I'll plan on joining Friday night. SC, too bad Mike can't come along, it's been way too long since we've hiked together... Maybe his schedule will change.

randall, he really does hike like a speed demon. OMG....he's freakin' crazy. Not me. Im a slow poke. Steady though and rarely take breaks. so if ya all are faster dont worry bout me, i'll eventually get to camp. I'll take a map or something.

SC, it's indiana, you don't need a map...just walk till ya find a good spot to camp ;) here's a couple websites i posted on one of the other threads for this trip...i can't remember if there were maps though

I've been looking around and there is a geocash on the Adena trace, not far in from the dam.

I would still like a map as I am directionaly challenged...I can probebly just send for one or pick one up when I get there.

Hey Everybody!!
What's Geo caching?????? I got a GPS, use it mostly for the odometer, lol.
Hey SC no maps at the site, but the good news is the trail is realy well marked, but not at the stream crossings. You gotta search a bit to find the other side on two that I know of. FYI the streams can be deep if there is enough rain. Last year in April I had to cross two that were up to my knees, but that was after 24+ hours of rain.

geocaching is a neat game were you find "caches", things that people hide in various public places like parks...some are as small as a film canister with just a log book in them and some have different "prizes" in them...usually small toys and stuff for kids, some even have cash...there's another cool thing called a travel bug that goes from one cache to another and you can track it's progress online...really the fun is just in finding it...check out these sites

www.geocaching.com

or

www.letterboxing.org

the second one is the same thing only instead of giving coordinates and using a GPS they give you clues and you find it on your own

Ok,
I was trying to get a total for the number of people that are going to be camping Friday night (3/17/06)"St Patricks Day" So far I have:
1. Randall
2. Spirit Coyote
3. Wanderfool
4. Golfhiker and company?
5. Thriftyhiker
6. Salem?
Anyone else????
I think that is all. We may have to move up in the pines if that many show. That would put us about ¼ mile from good water (all of it up hill) The shore spots on the east side are small. There is a creek and more room there, but the water is not great!!! Kinda muddy and unpredictable.
Hmmm, sounds like my first wife. lol
See ya later.

I recently moved to indianapolis and have never backpacked in indiana. Where are some other good places to backpack? I hear Turkey Run SP is nice, but i think you have to stay with the rednecks in the campground.

Hi Koomer,

Indiana has two halves. The Northern half is flat, and boring. The Southern half is hilly with alot of great places to hike. Some good places to hike would be: Deam Wilderness just south of Bloomington. Morgan-Monroe by Martinsville. If you want to hike a challenging trail try either the Aventure or Knobstone Trails.

You might want to check-out another website that alot of people post trips to is:

Midwesthiker.com

Hope to meet-up with you on a hike soon

Weather
Hey, does anyone have an inkling about the weather in mid March. The groundhog told us we would have 6 more weeks of winter. Does that mean it's just going to become Spring on 3/17? Ha!! ;)

I want to know if I should still bring my fleece bag liner or leave it at home. What do you think?

I am still up in the air but will probably make it. I will do something that weekend since St. Paddy's Day is my B-day. It's either drive an hour to somewhere I haven't been and meet new people or go 6 hours to Mt. Rogers and bug Frige.

I give you all one guess as to my real name.

Hey Koomer
You could always go on this trip!!
Looks like there is gonna be a lot of folks from TT. Oh yeah, another good place to hike is Morgan-Monroe state forest (Or something like that) That’s only 40 miles south of Indy on 37. They got some really cool Rock Shelters there and that the beginning of the Tecumseh Trail. Here’s the link http://www.hoosierhikerscouncil.org/Trail_Work/tecumseh.shtml

You moved to a good place as there’s a whole lot of good trials in Indiana (Mostly in the South). See ya later.

Weather>>>>>>>><<<<<<
Ok, Mid March can be unpredictable in that part of Indiana. I would bring warm stuff for the nights and just keep checking the Weather. The zip code for that part is 47331 so you plug that into the WeatherChannel site and get something close. A word of caution here, Rain is a better bet than snow, but it has snowed there in March and one year we got 14” Think positive.

Hey GH<<<<<<>>>>>>>
Wow!!! I am still recovering from Crash’s Red River Ice Box trip. Man, it was 9 degrees Sunday morning and snow everywhere. I remember why I don’t winter camp that much anymore. I will post a report on Friday, it should be a good read!!
I still have not found a good campsite for Friday night. As it stands I am leaning towards camping on the east side and heading north from the east side trail head. Anything south of there is not a good bet as it is very hilly. Hey GH you live close, maybe you could head down thataway and do some scouting. The trailhead is right at the east side of the causeway on Fairfield road. There is a parking lot and fishing trails heading north from there. I remember that there is a good spot about a half mile north from the lot. We could even go farther if someone found a better spot.
Well see ya later.

There really are not any good camping spots on the east side of Brookville . . . at least nothing that has been established. I have hiked the entire trail twice before and don't remember any other than the one you talk about using, and that one is quite small. Of course, this early in the year it could be more open without all the vegetation. I stayed at Whitewater Memorial State Park on Friday night both times when I hiked the trail before. It's only about a half hour drive north of the causeway. There is also a campground at the Monds State Recreation Area, but I've never stayed there before.

Here's a link to some pics on my first hike:
