I counted up 9 so far. Pretty good for such a slow year. I'll be happy if I can double that by the end of the year.

Hey Toejam
Hey Toejam, did Shawn happen to send you an email about a possible Wind Rivers Trip around Late Aug/Sept? He sent me an email last month wanting to know if I was intersted. I told him yes. I was planning to go to Alaska this summer but that has been cancelled because the organizer is having cancer treatments. I had signed up for the Sequoia trip by Bearcrossing next month but nothing looks real good for me till mid August now. My 2006 bags nights stand at 7 so far. Gotta get that number up.

Shawns Proposed trip
Southern loop, 50-60 miles, ten mile days or so. Some trees, some alpine.

You got mail. My excuse is too lame to post in public.

My best bag night was a Friday night when all the family was busy. I kayaked to a big sand bar on the river. It was quick and easy and I was home before the family was fully conscious Saturday morning. I need to do a bunch more of those.

Getting 2 more this weekend....will be with the "noisy" Scouts...but thenI comfort myself by the fact that we have a better record of making Good Citizens than any of the whiney butt, entitlement leftists do. And Jack.....65 is a LOW rate for what you are doing. Thanks by the way.

Troll, eh? LOL! Seems we all ID "bagnights" as we like. For me it's a night in a tent. These nights were all car camping, with a good variety of day activities thrown in.

Sunday, June 18 - Thursday, June 22 (5 nights): Remote, primitive car camp in Black Hills National Forest in the Edgemont, SD vicinity. With Passport in Time (PIT) project, recording and hunting Indian rock art in area canyons. Almost blew away/got killed in cheap-ass Wally World car camping tent four of the five nights with high winds and lightning/thunder storms.

Friday, June 23 (1 night): Cushy car camping at Deer Campground, Buffalo, Wyoming.

Satuday, June 24 (1 night): After day viewing two re-enactments at 130th anniversary of event -- and time at the Little Bighorn Battlefield -- I drove up into the Bighorn Mountains on Highway 14 in the dark. Set up camp in forest on unknown road around midnight. (Never been in Bighorns before)

Sunday, June 25 (1 night): Another remote car camp near Porcupine Creek in the northern Bighorns.

Monday, June 26 (1 night): Set up at Bald Mt. Forest service Campground in Bighorns.

Tuesday, June 27 (1 night): Camped at KOA at Devil's Tower National Monument, WY. (aimed for park campground, but it was full)

Spent nights in my Jeep enroute both to and from my home to the vacation locations, but those aren't in a tent, so not "bagnights."

Friday June 23 Seven miles into Lake Solitude,Cloud Peak Wilderness, WY to survey campsite impacts with friend and Wilderness Watch volunteer RW. Both of us not in our best shape but made good time to have a long evening to explore a popular but new to us landmark. Heard one party move through far below our high moraine site.

Saturday June 24 surveyed 13 sites, trashed and naturalized nine illegal fire rings, back in camp before 6:00. A cold mass started to move through, dampening the mosquitos feast, and treated us to a better than average evening light show across the Cloud Peak summit and Bomber Mountain.

Sunday June Hoar frost across camp except my bivy, Goretex works. We take the long way back to the Battle Park TH to view ATV issues and unlicensed outfitting. The ATV abuse of wet trail spots surpassed my raised bile index and birthed a few letters to some trails people and the FS District Ranger.

Missed lizs and hope the Medicine Wheel was in your journey.

Missed you too range walker. I was in Sheridan very briefly a week ago Saturday. Wondered what the hubbub was, then realized y'all were celebrating Buffalo Bill. And then I got outta town fast, going to the re-enactments at Little Bighorn.

I ended up just staying in the Northern Bighorns, what with screeching Jeep brakes and all, and wanting to limit the times I came DOWN out of the mts, lol. I mt. biked FS Rd. 196, a short loop. Day hiked to Porcupine Falls.

The following day I then did what's called the "Jaws" trail, with a big ole nice trailhead, which you could tell was really set up for horses. Ended up, as I thought it would, going to meet Porcupine Creek and then heading downstream. Could go all the way to (Bucking?) Mule Creek Falls, but I didn't. I went a bit past the Porcupine Creek Falls intersection (where the trail left the stream)... then came back and followed a bushwhacked trail along the creek to the falls. Pretty trecherous footing and all on fallen and at times loose boulders. Tried to cross the stream on a log, which started rolling! I was careful as all get out. It was bad. Half mile one-way at most. But I did get to see where the falls go over the narrow opening.

Then back. Figured around 9 miles with the slow, painstaking, scary bushwhack. 4.5 hours.

Then I went to Medicine Wheel, which I found wonderful and spiritual. That was another 3 miles that day. Also liked being able to see the Porcupine Creek drainage from there. (And hated seeing the stinking RV/travel trailers parked freakin' everywhere! WTF is up with that??!?!?)

Those were the big things. Plus hikes at Little Bighorn and a quick hike around the base of Devil's Tower.

Stovey, "primitive car camping" = middle of nowhere in a tent, but car close by. Could use propane stove to cook, had water in big containers and, at least for the five days in Black Hills National Forest, I was in a big ole honking tent.

Another night. Total 22.

Car camping. Yellow River State Forest. Plus a 7-mile day hike on ALL the trails in the North Unit of Effigy Mounds National Monument. The trail was not offically open past the first new bridge, but we toiled on anyway. Came to a second new bridge and, finally, the hike up and on the ridge to Hanging Rock. Cool!

That trail's been closed a long time... and it's been a long time since I've been back to Hanging Rock.
