Zeta strengthens into tropical storm

MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Zeta again strengthened into a tropical storm Thursday and could break the record for the storm lasting the longest into January since record keeping began in 1851.

Zeta, the 27th and final named storm in a tumultuous, record-breaking hurricane season that officially ended more than a month ago, had sustained winds near 40 mph at 10 a.m., up from 35 mph earlier in the day, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Winds had reached 65 mph on Wednesday.”

“LOL....I love the panic buyers during Hurricane Season...my neighbor started quizzing me on "food supplies" I started laughing. Since I am a backpacker I usually have 5 or 6 days of meals set aside. I just finished dehydrating a huge supply of bell peppers, next is the ground beef, and italian sausage.
When I was a kid we had a snow/Ice storm in Dallas Tx. Power was out for days, we put all the fridge items in the snow on the deck outside my bedroom. Since we had gas Water heater I had hot water for showers, and the house was built to where the two fireplaces could keep the majority of the house from freezing.
Slowly but surely my brothers and parents slipped out and went to my grandmother's house (gas floor furnaces). They finally asked me when I was leaving.
I looked at them and said,"What, I got light, a nice bed, heck even hot water to shower and clean stuff. Guys, this is just camping to me. Heck it is nicer than camping"

“I'm not panicing...I just want to be ready, .....but there are a few things we need....we had plenty of food & water, and all my camping/backpacking gear....we were without power for almost a week, with temps in the 90s...we have city water, so we had water and took cold showers....but we almost ran out of gas...and at times there was no gas.....we have a generator and we watched tv every now and then so we could see what was going on to the west of us...and we could keep our cell phones charged....panic???....no......I just like to be prepared.....and not wait until the last moment.....I must say tho last year before Katrina, Walmart had everything you need ( batteries...water....propane..etc..) stockpiled and in the middle of the isles so you could get it quick....”

“Many of the grocery stores here now have backup generators just in case of another extended outage. Florida's trying to make it state law that all gas stations have generators to keep the gas flowing. I still haven't reorganized the "important papers" for this season.”

“That's a good plan......BUT what can ya do when there is no gas....people went crazy last year at gas stations...I just stayed home!!!!...saved my gas for emergencies!!!”

I became informed the CO2 thing is a lie, my gosh, CO2 levels have only increased by 80 parts per million these last 60 or so years! Thats an infitesimally small increase isn't it?

No, the levels were only 300 ppm 60 years ago, so an 80 ppm increase is actually nearly a 25% increase.

Of course such levels of CO2 is irrelevent to the frequency or magnitude of hurricanes the Heartland assures

because

(from the Heartland Institute) such levels have never been observed before, therefore we have no idea what will happen, so there is absolutely no reason to be concerned about increasing hurricane frequency and/or magnitude, why worry, be happy.

“(CNN) -- The 2006 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be an active one, with up to 10 of the big storms, the National Hurricane Center announced Monday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that four to six of those hurricanes could reach Category 3 strength or higher -- with maximum sustained winds topping 111 mph.

NOAA predicts 13 to 16 named storms this season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. Eight to 10 of those storms are expected to reach hurricane strength.

NOAA administrator, retired Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, said that warmer sea surface temperatures, low wind shear and other wind conditions are favorable to hurricane development.

Now for federal assistance to come your way you need to have the MAYOR, EMA DIRECTOR and Governor agree to allow federal assistance. If they are too stupid or idotic to allow it...you are on your own. Additionally they must have a plan filed with FEMA that tells what they think they will need and shows at least and assessment of the danger.
If not...YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.”

“tides are up, wind and sand are blowing and we've moved outside furniture in. we have two sea turtle nest in front of the house, i'm sure we will loose them both. if they get saturated with water it destroys the embryos. not sure if the wildlife agency that looks after them will be picking the eggs up or not.

“Creek Dancer, I have never been there, but my kids have been there on school trips. I know a couple people who have volunteered there and of course the facility shows up on the news every so often.

I have been present when the sea turtle rescue people dig up the nests 3 days after the initial hatching. They count the eggs and set free any of the little buggers still alive. Its cool to watch them make their way to the surf.”

“Hyway, I have volunteered there as well and hope to return this summer. My family vacations at Sunset Beach, NC every summer and I take a couple of days to help out at the hospital. It's very cool to watch a "boil", i.e. turtle hatching. As the little guys make their way to the surface, the sand appears to turn over as if it were boiling. Last summer Sunset Beach only had one nest, as opposed to several dozen. I think that the hurricane activity from last summer had an affect.”
