2006 Hurricane ForecastView Messages“From the team at Colorado State U: 17 named storms 9 hurricanes 5 intense hurricanes (Initial prediction for last year was 11; we had 27)” 4:11:36 PM 1/05/06 “Hey we're not done with 2005 yet!! Zeta strengthens into tropical storm Thursday, January 5, 2006; Posted: 11:36 a.m. EST (16:36 GMT) MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Zeta again strengthened into a tropical storm Thursday and could break the record for the storm lasting the longest into January since record keeping began in 1851. Zeta, the 27th and final named storm in a tumultuous, record-breaking hurricane season that officially ended more than a month ago, had sustained winds near 40 mph at 10 a.m., up from 35 mph earlier in the day, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Winds had reached 65 mph on Wednesday.” 4:28:38 PM 1/05/06 “Zeta's about done for.” 11:01:11 AM 1/06/06 “yikers.” 5:38:17 PM 1/07/06 9:23:04 PM 3/19/06 “Are you starting to get ready for this year????.....we have a list of things we need, or need to replenish.....one of my wish list items is a 5" battery operated tv....(I would love a new generator...)...for Christmas I got a "vacuum sealer system" so I need to get my family pictures ready.....” 5:47:19 AM 3/20/06 “I heard the waters in the Gulf are much warmer than normal this time of year already and that they are predicting 27 named storms. Anywhere to actually find this info?” 5:57:32 AM 3/20/06 6:03:56 AM 3/20/06 SOB's of 2006 “2006 Alberto Beryl Chris Debby Ernesto Florence Gordon Helene Isaac Joyce Kirk Leslie Michael Nadine Oscar Patty Rafael Sandy Tony Valerie William” 6:07:23 AM 3/20/06 6:10:48 AM 3/20/06 “Thank you, Divinity. From what I can tell, only a couple degrees warmer than this time of year for Key West but 10 degrees warmer for Pensacola. Am I reading that right?” 6:14:11 AM 3/20/06 “Yes.....wow....maybe an early season???” 6:20:09 AM 3/20/06 Get Busy Div.... “Vacuum seal EVERYTHING!” 6:30:02 AM 3/20/06 “Super...are you making fun oof me?????” 6:31:27 AM 3/20/06 “Oh Nadine, why cain't-chya be true? Ya done started back a-doin' them thangs you used to do!” 7:15:03 AM 3/20/06 “LOL....I love the panic buyers during Hurricane Season...my neighbor started quizzing me on "food supplies" I started laughing. Since I am a backpacker I usually have 5 or 6 days of meals set aside. I just finished dehydrating a huge supply of bell peppers, next is the ground beef, and italian sausage. When I was a kid we had a snow/Ice storm in Dallas Tx. Power was out for days, we put all the fridge items in the snow on the deck outside my bedroom. Since we had gas Water heater I had hot water for showers, and the house was built to where the two fireplaces could keep the majority of the house from freezing. Slowly but surely my brothers and parents slipped out and went to my grandmother's house (gas floor furnaces). They finally asked me when I was leaving. I looked at them and said,"What, I got light, a nice bed, heck even hot water to shower and clean stuff. Guys, this is just camping to me. Heck it is nicer than camping" last edited: 3/20/06 7:42:56 AM” 7:42:24 AM 3/20/06 “I'm not panicing...I just want to be ready, .....but there are a few things we need....we had plenty of food & water, and all my camping/backpacking gear....we were without power for almost a week, with temps in the 90s...we have city water, so we had water and took cold showers....but we almost ran out of gas...and at times there was no gas.....we have a generator and we watched tv every now and then so we could see what was going on to the west of us...and we could keep our cell phones charged....panic???....no......I just like to be prepared.....and not wait until the last moment.....I must say tho last year before Katrina, Walmart had everything you need ( batteries...water....propane..etc..) stockpiled and in the middle of the isles so you could get it quick....” 5:52:13 AM 3/21/06 “Many of the grocery stores here now have backup generators just in case of another extended outage. Florida's trying to make it state law that all gas stations have generators to keep the gas flowing. I still haven't reorganized the "important papers" for this season.” 6:02:56 AM 3/21/06 “That's a good plan......BUT what can ya do when there is no gas....people went crazy last year at gas stations...I just stayed home!!!!...saved my gas for emergencies!!!” 6:10:44 AM 3/21/06 “That's the whole idea really. Don't waste what you do have. That reminds me, I need to call my dealer and see if my new catalytic converter came in yet. Thanks for reminding me Div! ;)” 6:13:40 AM 3/21/06 “Reading materials from the Heartland Institute I became informed the CO2 thing is a lie, my gosh, CO2 levels have only increased by 80 parts per million these last 60 or so years! Thats an infitesimally small increase isn't it? No, the levels were only 300 ppm 60 years ago, so an 80 ppm increase is actually nearly a 25% increase. Of course such levels of CO2 is irrelevent to the frequency or magnitude of hurricanes the Heartland assures because (from the Heartland Institute) such levels have never been observed before, therefore we have no idea what will happen, so there is absolutely no reason to be concerned about increasing hurricane frequency and/or magnitude, why worry, be happy. last edited: 3/21/06 6:21:14 AM” 6:16:05 AM 3/21/06 “I had dreams all night about preparing for a hurricane....flashlights.....batteries....rubbermaid tubs....LOl.......” 6:29:33 AM 3/24/06 Well here it is: “(CNN) -- The 2006 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be an active one, with up to 10 of the big storms, the National Hurricane Center announced Monday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that four to six of those hurricanes could reach Category 3 strength or higher -- with maximum sustained winds topping 111 mph. NOAA predicts 13 to 16 named storms this season, which runs from June 1 to November 30. Eight to 10 of those storms are expected to reach hurricane strength. NOAA administrator, retired Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, said that warmer sea surface temperatures, low wind shear and other wind conditions are favorable to hurricane development. GOOD LUCK TO ALL! ”5:13:02 PM 5/22/06 “Yep, I saw the name list. Good time to move; both HPM (Michael) and his brother (Chris) are on the storm name list. Not a good sign.” 6:52:00 PM 5/22/06 “My Gradmother's name was on the last one. Is the move on? last edited: 5/22/06 6:53:39 PM” 6:53:07 PM 5/22/06 “See ya!” 7:26:49 PM 5/22/06 “KEWL!!!” 7:42:13 PM 5/22/06 “I hope we get hit up here (CT) this year. Nothing big, but a nice lil' Gloria would be good. (sorry, I'm a meteorologist...)” 6:42:48 AM 5/23/06 “LOL.....yes...that is all we are hearing on the news down here......I have been picking up a few things each week....think I will add bottled water to my list...we had water last year....BUT what if we don't the next time???? ...oh...and a pool.....wooo hooooo!!! last edited: 5/23/06 7:03:29 AM” 7:02:03 AM 5/23/06 “OKay lets review, keep 3 to 5 days of supplies on hand. IF A BIG FREAKING STORM IS HEADED YOUR WAY>>>EVACUATE. Now for federal assistance to come your way you need to have the MAYOR, EMA DIRECTOR and Governor agree to allow federal assistance. If they are too stupid or idotic to allow it...you are on your own. Additionally they must have a plan filed with FEMA that tells what they think they will need and shows at least and assessment of the danger. If not...YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.” 7:23:31 AM 5/23/06 “what about the pets? i thought i saw something about a bill that would disallow FEMA grants if there was no pet rescue process in place.” 8:11:37 AM 5/23/06 The first one may be developing soon “According to models we may see something develop soon. http://www.stormsurfing.com/cgi/display.cgi?a=natla_height http://weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/model_forecast/animateweb_e.html?imagetype=model_forecast&imagename=12_054_G1_north@america@zoomout_I_4PAN_CLASSIC@012_....jpg” 9:44:30 AM 6/08/06 Models still varied on track 9:50:33 AM 6/08/06 “Ah Wunderground, practically my homepage during hurricane season.” 10:58:04 AM 6/08/06 “It's official: TD#1, formed in the Caribbean.” 9:55:45 AM 6/10/06 “Maybe, it will bring some much needed rain up here to WNC>” 10:46:39 AM 6/10/06 “Our luck, it'll hit J-ville, bounce off the Atlantic and hit Charlotte next.” 7:07:42 PM 6/10/06 “could be coming my way” 7:11:13 PM 6/10/06 “tides are up, wind and sand are blowing and we've moved outside furniture in. we have two sea turtle nest in front of the house, i'm sure we will loose them both. if they get saturated with water it destroys the embryos. not sure if the wildlife agency that looks after them will be picking the eggs up or not. http://www.weather.com/newscenter/tropical/?from=wxcenter_news last edited: 6/11/06 12:45:46 PM” 12:44:16 PM 6/11/06 “I spent most of the afternoon southwest of Jacksonville, in Orange Park, at our Koi club meeting. As we sat outside broiling in the sun, we watched the obviously tropical system related clous roll in. We started cheering. We so desperately need rain right now.” 4:28:22 PM 6/11/06 “How's everyone on the Gulf side of Florida doing? Okay? We have nothing yet, just clouds.” 7:46:10 AM 6/12/06 “ITS A FREAKING TROPICAL STORM....45 mph winds...30% chance of even reaching WUSSIE CAT 1. Come on...we get that in a typical Summer storm here in Georgia. The best thing is it will kill the RED FLAG stuff in Florida...Amazing how Mother Nature can take care of herself...and there is NOTHING WE CAN DO to change it.” 7:48:58 AM 6/12/06 “Wow XL, you're coming across as an ass this morning.” 7:50:40 AM 6/12/06 “we're right on the beach in pinellas county and the rain and wind are light now but the heavy stuff is just off shore. tornados are being sited in the counties to the east of us.” 8:16:27 AM 6/12/06 “all I know is this better not mess up my plans to put my kids on a plane in Myrtle beach so they can visit their aunt for 10 days. I might be tempted to elave them in a motel and come back in pick them up 10 days later.” 8:29:25 AM 6/12/06 Hyway “Hey Hyway, have you been to the Sea Turtle Hospital in Top Sail?” 8:32:27 AM 6/12/06 “No #&%!$ XL. We all know that, cause well, we actually live with this every year. The only person freaking out about this is you. Everyone else is just comparing notes.” 8:39:08 AM 6/12/06 “Alberto Strengthens.... Hope you all get more rain than wind....peace out.” 9:32:54 AM 6/12/06 “Creek Dancer, I have never been there, but my kids have been there on school trips. I know a couple people who have volunteered there and of course the facility shows up on the news every so often. I have been present when the sea turtle rescue people dig up the nests 3 days after the initial hatching. They count the eggs and set free any of the little buggers still alive. Its cool to watch them make their way to the surf.” 9:52:21 AM 6/12/06 “Hyway, I have volunteered there as well and hope to return this summer. My family vacations at Sunset Beach, NC every summer and I take a couple of days to help out at the hospital. It's very cool to watch a "boil", i.e. turtle hatching. As the little guys make their way to the surface, the sand appears to turn over as if it were boiling. Last summer Sunset Beach only had one nest, as opposed to several dozen. I think that the hurricane activity from last summer had an affect.” 10:11:55 AM 6/12/06
