catskhiker - When I originally posted the picture of my car parked at the trailhead in a Disabled Parking Space, I explained that "I did not leave the car there. I left the Disabled Parking Place for the day hikers." It was only there for the picture. As you pointed out, it could become a target for vandalism and that is the main reason I do not leave the car in such a position.

It would be nice to have the car close-by, when I end a hike. Each time I start a hike I do not know whether or not I will be able to finish, or in what condition I might return. There is no way for me to know when my knees may quit cooperating.

But more important, it is a real shame that people draw important conclusions based upon limited information or observations. Especially when they might learn more by offering their help, even if it does not appear to be needed immediately. One's eyes do not always see the entire picture.

Sorry, but if you go hiking, your car has no business in a disabled spot whether your knees "might" give out or not. Seems like you are trying to justify it in your own mind but basically don't care. You just like those spots like too many other people with tags they don't really need.

Wow...that is lame-o cats.....I mean, I am SURE you'd target me when I drive my mom around! This past summer, I was parked in a handicapped spot near the beach-my mother was in the back seat of my Explorer. She had the windows cracked...and heard two ladies going by talking about "how could a car with hiking stickers need to be in a handicapped spot!". So, a lot of times, people don't know the whole story if they see what they think of 'healthy' people getting out of the vehicle.
My mom likes to go to scenic areas with me. She can barely walk, has to use a sport walker to get around (she has lost parts of her feet, and is legally blind in one eye.) So we go places...many times I go walking and she likes to sit and look out the windows. Should she have to not use her placard, and park in a less scenic area? I think not. She is allowed to be there!

During the height of my illness this past summer/fall, I seriously considered getting a placard. I could drive, but there were days I couldn't walk more than 1/4 mile without almost passing out. Going to the grocery store would wear me out so bad, I would have to sit in the truck for 10 minutes before I drove home. The thought of parking next to the store was a fantasy I'd have loved. Yet, I knew that if I did, I'd hear crap from people in the parking lot, due to my age.

We all know that the stickers & plates are abused. Many times the person who might NEED that space isn't even IN the car.

We all see road rage too. It's not zen, it's just a little consideration & common courtesy.

I've herniated discs folks on the job, to such an extent I can't carry a winter back pack any more. I've had severe limps for months at a time & spent 8 months on crutches after a gunshot wound. I still believed that other people needed it more than I. The abuse of those spaces is tremendous.

Be considerate & fair is all I ask.
catskhiker

Catskhiker, you are so wrong! You fail to recognize that I have been on crutches for most of the last two months. I have been using them to rise from bed and from sitting positions, to walk inside my abode, and everywhere outside. Right now I could not attempt to backpack. But I plan to try it again soon.

I previously met the qualifications for a Disabled Parking Permit and continue to do so. Using the Permit in a legal manner is not abuse of the existing system.

You previously said:
"If you backpack or hike short of using a wheelchair, then yes you are abusing this system in my unenlightened opinion. If you workout, swim or take martial arts classes.....again yes, I believe you are wrong."
To all of that I say, BS! Most people in my position would likely use a wheelchair and/or a mobility scooter. I struggle to continue in a more difficult manner. And for that you would disqualify me!

Taking these disqualifying items in order:

1. backpack or hike short of using a wheelchair - I use a very strong stick for major support. I, also, use trees, outcroppings and anything else handy for support. Small watershed barriers are major obstacles for me. I have learned to use my legs in an extended position like poles together with my strong, hiking stick to overcome obstacles. The hiking stick, also, aids in both my support and balance as I stumble along the trails. In fact, most of my weight is normally on the hiking stick. I can no longer carry hardly any weight in front of myself, like groceries. But, fortunately, I can carry weight on my back by leaning forward and putting most of my weight on the hiking stick. So, perhaps, my hiking stick can be considered my wheelchair!

2 . workout Many disabled people work out. Most or all of the 12 Disabled Parking Places in front of my health club are filled all day. They do a lot of physical rehabilitation in the building. This activity is considered working out. Many such workouts could be considered limited. We all do what we can. Disabled folks work aroud their limitations. I do the same in my workouts. I avoid running and jumping, but this does not mean that I don't get a workout. My main limitation besides my knees is to keep my heart rate below 130. This level is quite liberal for my age. Disqualifying me for working out is ridiculous.

3. swim You are way out in left field on this one. Most swimming is done with the arms. I have seen numbers like 90-95%. Swimming puts almost no weight or pressure on the knees. However, if you are including diving in this, you are correct. Jumping up and down on a diving board would require good legs and knees. But I don't think you were including it. This one inclusion alone just about nullifies your entire argument.

4. martial arts classes Previously I explained that I only have to do things that I can do. The rest I am required to learn, in case I ever give instructions. The instructor, my classmates and I are very careful of my knees during classes. I still have an ace in the hole. If my knees do not improve sufficiently, I can do the maneuvers from a chair. In fact, we have practiced doing just that. I can sit in a chair and make throws and/or disable attackers coming at me from any direction with any of 14 different attacks, straight punches, hooks, chokes, grabs, kicks, etc.

I attended a clinic in which one of the participants had only one leg. He did well and was very good in his Martial Art, Jujitsu.

So, disablement is no reason to withdraw from participation in Martial Arts.

So much for your arguments. They aren't worth anything. But, at the same time, you are entitled to your opinions and your preferences. Under your rules I should not have a Disabled Parking Permit. Ok, but there is a difference between methods of qualification. Your's may be the better, but I'm going with the legal one. The rest of your statements have to do with your personal situation and suspected abuses by others. Again, may I urge caution. A book should not be judged by it's cover. You may see me walk or stumble and decide I am not disabled. However, I'm going to go with my doctor's decision. She is the one who examined the most recent x-rays of my knees.

Crash Bang is a smart person. I have to agree with him: "You just wanna argue with somebody”

"We all know that the stickers & plates are abused. Many times the person who might NEED that space isn't even IN the car"

How do you know that? Not unless you watch the people get out of the vehicle would you know that. Even then, there are people that look "healthy" that have plates or a placard-they have illness or health problems that don't show on the outside. Fair and considerate? I don't think you are being that with how much you are judging others rights to be there!
My mom's sister has permanent plates. From the outside she looks just like an older lady. She can barely walk from the store parking lot to inside. She only goes to stores with power carts. She has had numerous cancers that have eaten her strength, and suffers neurorapthy of the legs so has little feeling in her legs. Should we say she shouldn't have that spot out front?
Oh yeah, and on the topic of pregant woman and parking spots....a lot of stores out here have "expantant mom" slots. Man I hated waddling at 8 months. I was out of breath with that balloon called my child inside. It is a nice touch to see those parking spots!

It’s not difficult to get a disabled parking permit. Many people ABUSE them is all I said. My wife works in a hospital for the last 30 years. My daughter worked in a hospital for many years thru high school & college until she became a teacher. I have spent THOUSANDS of hours with Doctors as part of my job. My next-door neighbor is a doctor. One would be willing to give me one if I’d just do as he asks.

If you NEED it, I think it’s a GOOD thing for you to use. If you are going hiking or martial arts classes you are ABUSING the privilege.

I use 2 hiking sticks AND pain medication. I hike alone & at my own (slow) speed so that I can stop & go as I please. (Or turn around) NO EXCUSE.

Workouts? Yes, you are abusing it. Someone that can barely make it into physical therapy (with assistance) or a chiropractic prob NEEDS that space far more.

Yes, I include Swimming too, short of a physical therapy session WITH a physical therapist or other medical personnel.

Martial Arts? Are you kidding me? Stop lying to yourself. You LIKE parking up front & you don’t & will NEVER care what other people think.

Again, if there are times that you need it, I have no problem with that.

MANY times you do not need it & take the spot from somebody that does. AS I said before, it wouldn’t be too high on my list (& many others) to solve an abuse to your vehicle for its misuse.

Crash Bang, I see road ragers in court all the time & you strike me as one. I could be wrong. (wouldn't be the first time).

I agree that pedastrians should considerately walk to the side, but the center is safer place to walk. Many have been struck by vehicles backing out of their slots. Pedestrians have the legal right-of-way in most instances.

I actually leave early for 95% of the places that I have to go. I've stopped & assisted stranded motorists & accident victims (easy excuse for my work) and STILL made it to work on time. I'm probably one of the few people on this list that ACTUALLY drive at the speed limit, come to a full & complete stop at signs & don't run red lights.

Give yourself extra time & the slow drivers, school buses, flat tires or whatever won't drive you to rant. EXPECT these problems in advance.

catskhiker - Your post at 7:49:53 AM 1/08/06 was full of repetition. You are like a broken record. Crash Bang could be correct, you may be Sarge. I've already shown you the errors in your viewpoints, but you don't seem to understand.

People that can hike, work-out, do martial arts and swim and have a permit are not abusing the privilege.

OK, prove that many people abuse the permits.

There is no test or determination to see who needs the Disabled Parking Space the most. Either one qualifies for the permit or one does not!

You say you hike. You say you are eligible for a Disabled Parking Permit, but you choose not to get one. So you say that I should follow your lead and not have a permit if I hike. Your decision is yours. Sorry, but I'm not going to follow you. And that does not make me wrong, or you either in your decision. If you were to get a permit and use it, the only abuse would be in your mind!
"MANY times you do not need it & take the spot from somebody that does. AS I said before, it wouldn’t be too high on my list (& many others) to solve an abuse to your vehicle for its misuse."
catskhiker
MANY times you do not need it ? Name them
take the spot from somebody ? again, when?
somebody that does (need it) ? How can you determine if they need it or not? You've already said that most people are abusing the system!
"AS I said before, it wouldn’t be too high on my list (& many others) to solve an abuse to your vehicle for its misuse."

Yep Cats your right I want to waste 5 plus min. waiting for people walking abreast down a parking lot. I have nothing else better to do with my life that to watch the ass end of someone while I sit in my car.

You say be thought full and considerate lets try this one on for size. When I walk down a parking lot and I hear a car coming up behind me I move to the side. When I come out a store and there is a car waiting at the cross walk I pick up the pace or start to jog to get out of their way. Why do I do this maybe because I'm aware of my surroundings and not self absorbed like everyone else.

And yes I get road rage when some butt hole thinks its a good idea to drive 4 inches off my bumper so if I think about tapping my brakes my Explorer butt will be eating his grill for lunch (or vice versa) And when I try and slow down to let them go around me they are still there. If I speed up in and attempt to lose them they are still there. Nothing pisses me off more.

I guess my mother was in the wrong when she would take my grandmother to lunch (who had Alzheimer’s) and parked in a handicap spot. Or pulled up front of the Assisted Living Home to take her back to her room and spend an hour plus with her even though my grandmother wouldn't remember it.

Your right in that we should all just suck it up with something disables us from our normal selves. While I'm on this stupid rant why not get rid of all handicapped parking as it sounds like from you NOBODY deserves it.

Please go head and insult the rest of us as we are all in the wrong no matter what.

that is fine as long as she used the handicapped spot when your grandmother was with her. I am assuming you mom isn't disabled since you didn't say anything about her. Did she use it when she wasn't with her? There lies the problem. People abuse the handicapped spots when the person isn't with them. That is what gets people upset.

As far as your mother dropping your grandmother off and taking her upstairs plus staying an hour that is wrong. What if everybody did that? There would be no place to park for anyone dropping someone off. What if an emergency happened? Where will the ambulance park..out in the parking lot!!

Roam Around - Many "gyms" have other things to offer. And many things can be used by disabled people. Our place has an extensive Rehabilitation Center. And there are numerous water classes like AquaFit, H2O Low, Aqua Abs, Aqua Power and Aquaatic therapy. There is a snack bar and a gift center, a children's center(mainly for children of people who work in the hospital), a baby sitting facility. a masage faciity, a beauty shop, etc. In a way I feel guilty using one of the elevators instead of the stairs to get to the main exercise areas on the second floor and to some of the specialty rooms on the third floor.

A disabled person may want to exercise parts of the body that are not disabled. Like, with my bad knees, I can certainly exercise my upper body on machines or in the weight room, or go swimming. I can even manage to play some racketball or handball at times, but I don't run around the track. In another area I can do push-ups, sit-ups and crunches.

So many "gyms" are much more than just a gym. And Disabled Parking is provided probably because of local laws.

Handicapped parking is a real pet peeve of mine. Here in Ohio it is way too easy to get a HC tag. When I see someone jump out of their car and run into the store from their HC parking spot it pisses me off. Now, I also feel people like NS should be able to get a temporary tag for post operatives reasons. I had a friend who had his pelvis crushed at work and was disabled for months afterward. He wasn’t able to get a temp HC tag. But some fat guy who caused his own disability gets one AND he’s got a scooter.

When I go to the store with the guys I take care of I could get a HC spot every time because they are in wheelchairs. Instead I park way out in the boonies and push them in.

Ewker...ambulances don't park in the handicapped spots...most modern parking lots have areas that are no parking, where ambulances can use, if needed. That would be right in front of the building, where ramps are.
It doesn't matter if someone uses a handicapped spot for 5 minutes or for 10 hours-it is their right to park in it. That is why it is there in the first place.
And yes, it is very obvious Cats is trolling to get people inflamed.

Now fer the Walmart ceenter thingie..our newer local Walmart does have that. So does our Safeway. Every other aisle has a walk area so you don't have to walk where the cars are. Pretty sweet indeed. Ya'all just need to live in better towns ;-)

I tried to stay away.....

My dad was classified as 100% disabled by the US Government. One of his legs was amputated, he had suffered numerous heart attacks, and could only walked limited distances and used his wheel chair frequently when the pain in his stump became too much for the prosthesis.

If he had to walk too far in a parking lot on occasion I watched him take a nitro pill just to get that heart to calm down.

Did he look handicapped? No! If you didn't know him and he was wearing the leg, you might get pi$$ed at him when you saw him get out of his car in the handicapped stall.

Yes, he swam for recreation, rode his motorcycle for recreation and drove a vehicle to get from point a to point b. Because he was able to swim and ride a motorcycle....does that mean he doesn't deserve to use his government issued placard nor have that permanent license plate with the wheelchair on it? Do you realize how hard it is to get big brother to acknowledge you have a physical disability? Try 30 years of hard work.

I say lay off the handicapped people that don't look handicapped. I am sorry but I think we have a few (or maybe only one) mentally challenged people on this board who need a placard of their own.

Now, hopefully this is the only fuego thread I will ever allow myself to jump in on.

Actually.....
All I wanted to do is get you to think about it a little bit. I don't get involved with handicap parking or any other little stuff. My involvement is with major felons. I simply wouldn't get involved if I saw a handicapped person get mad either.

I don't like tailgating, but I won't slam on my brakes for a tailgator. I WILL drive slower. I got rear ended in town once when a crossing guard stepped out in front of me on a dreary day. I stopped for the kids at the crossing guards signal & the car behind me didn't.

That's a guaranteed 'points' ticket and the ONLY reason that she didn't get one because the officer from a local dept asked me.

40-50,000 people die from accidents a year & many of them needless deaths. Drive a little slower, be a little more courteous. Don't road rage.

I didn't say it, but I did not care for his site. Because:

1. It needs work. The page did not fit the width of my screen. Some of the type extended out of sight to the right, and no horizontal scroll bar was present.

2. There was no mention of what might happen to all these trip reports in one location. I could visualize someone publishing a book with a collection from that site. Maybe I missed any mention of security for the documents. It would be a little more difficult for someone collecting them from this site. But, of course, it could be done.

3. Not enough details were presented.

Then later, he, more or less, said the hell with his contrubuting any posts here. So, it appears that StoveStomper was correct. It was a one-shot plug for his site and away he went. Maybe it will turn out to be another "WebShots" deal. Free today, but if it grows, you'll have to pay or lose what you have!

I guess you're saying from my own words that I should have offered help. In those words of mine I was thinking of approaching someone who just parked in a Disabled Parking Place and offering help, instead of jumping to a conclusion that the person is abusing the system. In this situatin I had looked at the Profile Information and at his site before uttering "Yawn."

Sick of a car taking up two spaces on the street? How about a car too close to yours? What about the car at the mall parked diagonally? Now you can do something about it. Simply download a notice and place it on the car's windshield. The owner of the vehicle will be informed of their asshole staus as well as the proper tips to improve their poor parking techniques. It's time to put an end to asshole parking, or at least to make fun of it.
