“Newt Gingrich gave a commentary this morning on NPR that I thought hit the mark. I tried to find a transcript on their site but there wasn't one so I'll summarize. He said that absolute power corrupts absolutely all the time and that parties with no limits to power growth are absolutely corruptible. He also said that the framers of the constitution called for limited government. He spoke about the vicious cycle of lobbyist throwing fund raisers that raise enough money to scare people away from running against incumbents, this in turn frees up time for the incumbents to raise even more money. Fund raising has no place in Washington DC. You can listen to the whole thing here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5135241” 7:39:13 AM 1/09/06 “I think they should set a limit on the amount of funds a candidate can spend on a campaign. Lets see what they do when they have to stick to a budget.” 7:44:50 AM 1/09/06 “Newt really is very knowledgeable on this type of thing and he really did do everything he could to call for true limited government but was lamb basted by everyone on both sides for it and he backed down. If you like what Newt has to say you should check out Larry Elder’s books The 10 Things You Can’t Say in America and Showdown. Elder’s is very good at explaining the Libertarian point of view. Many people think that Libertarians want total freedom and chaos but when one takes a logical look at it in the big picture it really is a great concept.” 7:59:13 AM 1/09/06
