“Just wanted to say "hi". I just joined the TT boards. I know some folks here from Midwest Hikers and out on the trail.

I'm newer to bp'ing, have gone on 2 overnighters and have always been a dayhiker. I grew up near Indiana Dunes and now live along the north shore of Chicago.

Where on the North Shore?

We just moved from Hyde Park (Chicago) just around the corner from the Dunes. We now live in Mundelein a short drive to some parts of the north shore.

ChicagoMark I'm in Highland Park--I know where Mundelein is. I do a lot of dayhiking in Lake county. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit it but I got a shield for the hike Lake County program last year! It was fun, though, I discovered some places I might not have otherwise.”

It's great to have someone from your area that is a real hiker. Posting at this site are a bunch of patsies from your area. They mainly get together for lunches and drinks and try to bluff each other as to what great hikers they are. So, be careful.

I can grasp that you are a talented person and I sense that you are beautiful. How 'bout posting a picture of yourself on a trail or at the beach along the Indiana Dunes? This site has a place for your pictures.

I recognize your area a little. The same train that serves Indiana Dunes goes to Hudson Lake, before it gets to South Bend. Did you live anywhere near the International Gardens? Highland Park is not far from Twin Lakes, Wisconsin. The Twins were Mary and Elizabeth, which extends south into Illinois.

Are you ready for the smelt fishing season along Lake Michigan. It gets to be a lot of fun, when the smelt start to run.

“thriftyhiker - I don't understand your question. I would never make vile comments about my original, home town area. No way. It is optional on whether or not you want to include Indianapolis in the Chicago area. I do not. And I was only trying to see if I could pull a few legs(sort of like joking). I expected to get hit a lot harder! "Chicago folks" have become soft!

But here is how I can justify my statement.
If you look at strings about Chicago, "Lunch in Chicago" currently has 551 posts. This by far outdistances the total number of posts for all the Chicago area backpacking threads. Here are some of the strings. Sorry that the columns do not line up. I used the "pre" tag, but something else is still blocking the alignment. [It did not come out right. To find some of the strings, you are welcome to do a search using "Chicago."]

I just wish that I could be back in the area for some of the events. BTW, you can still enter your Bag Nights For 2005 before the final listing, which may be tomorrow. BTW, my total was 152. I feel that gives me a little right to pull some legs of the luncheon crowd.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that the Chicago luncheon group is great on exchanging Christmas Ornaments.

“Nowslimmer, have you considered the fact that the supposed lack of Chicago hiking threads might be because most of us who live in the Chicago-land area hike elsewhere?

If you were to read the Starry Snowshoe thread, that is all about getting together on a Chicago-area trail. There's just not much to offer around here without driving a couple hours at least.


All of my hiking in the last two years has been more than 2 hours from Chicago (except for the Indiana Dunes) and a thread about those hikes would never have the word Chicago in them.

Needless to say, nothing very challenging. Although I did enjoy the Independence Park trail which also hooks up with the Des Plaines River trail. Grassy Lake in Lake Barrington and MacDonald Woods in Lindenhurst were nice.

Thank you for the trail information. I plan to look up the trails. I had already checked some with Google. In one place I found that there were 10 or 12 trails which could be hiked for getting the Shield. Another place said you only needed to hike 7-trails to qualify. Somewhere else indicated that there had been a free period. Did you manage that or did you have to pay the $10 for the Shield?
