“Anyone ever read the "Epoch Times" - it looks like a regular, if thin, national newspaper with lots of decent national and regional stories. I found one on a train when I was bored and read one. Closer inspection makes it clear that its a Falun Gong paper. It's got lot's of articles on the Falun Gong, especially the persecution in China and lots of stuff on the Evil's of the Chinese Communist Pary. I wonder where Falun Gong gets the money to print this (ex-Pat Chinese businessmen?). Here's their website: http://english.epochtimes.com/index10.html” 11:47:47 AM 1/12/06 “They hand it out here by the ferry every week, Ped. I read it fairly often. The Falun Gong are always out on the streets here with rather dramatic demonstrations of their practice and the persecution the goes along with it. I see them on 42nd Street quite often. Usually, there's one person sitting inside a 3x3x4 cage with another dressed as a Chinese police officer. There's also some feigning a torture process, complete with fake wounds on their skin. They also have rather graphic images posted of the real human rights abuses suffered by these people in China. It's just a meditative practice. I wonder why it's so vehemently opposed by their government...” 11:56:12 AM 1/12/06 “Hmmm...definitely one to cherry pick from. there's better sources for news in China.” 12:03:35 PM 1/12/06 ““Hmmm...definitely one to cherry pick from. there's better sources for news in China.” Labornet.org?” 12:08:48 PM 1/12/06 “They just set up a free newspaper box around the corner from me. Their website is: http://english.epochtimes.com/index10.html I agree Mutt, selectivity and salt are necessary with this paper. (I have personal sources I trust for confirmation of any China stories) last edited: 1/12/06 12:12:38 PM” 12:11:17 PM 1/12/06 “Well, I've never really quoted anything I found in there or based any of my thoughts and opinions on it. Just a different source to look at, that's all. Hasn't amounted to much in that caopacity to me...” 12:21:12 PM 1/12/06 “I never heard of the Epoch Times or the Falun Gong.” 12:37:03 PM 1/12/06 “I'm not surprised...” 12:40:03 PM 1/12/06 “Tree: When a local official in China cracked down on Falun Gong, Falun Gong started to protest. At one point they staged a massive peaceful demonstration around the quarters of major pary officials. Something like 10,000 people sat and meditated. Given the size and organization of the protest, the massive membership of Falun Gong (even government officials were in the gtroup) - the Chinese Communist Party freaked out. They figured anything with that kind of power which organized protests against the government was dangerous. Once that protest disbanded, the CCP started an all out (and continuing campaign) to crush the Falun Gong.” 12:46:09 PM 1/12/06 “Bacpac: Falun Gong have been in the news a lot, but they have been most visible in areas with a significant Chinese population and in the major U.S. cities. The Wall Street Journal's Ian Johnson won the Pulitzer Prize for a series of Articles on them. The articles can be found here: http://www.pulitzer.org/year/2001/international-reporting/works/index3.html last edited: 1/12/06 12:50:09 PM” 12:49:42 PM 1/12/06 “That makes sense, Ped. thanks...” 1:05:02 PM 1/12/06
