I need a knife “I'm in the market for a new kinfe. I man reason is i need one for a survival program i;m taking for school this summer. I'll be doing high angle rescue, low angle rescue, swift water training and others. I will also have to servive for 3 days by myself on a mountain, possible about tree line i normally like small pocket knives but i think i may need something a little bigger then 2in and i have been told that a large non-folding knife is good for the servival part, but i don;t want that for all the rescue stuff. Does any one no of a good pocket knife that might fit all my requirements or should i just get two. I have never had good luck with mulit-blade knifes they always get really lose on me and are hard to work with” 10:58:22 AM 1/14/06 “try ebay!” 9:23:38 PM 1/14/06 Benchmade 551 Griptilian Pardue “I have this model and I like it a lot. Benchmade is a very good knife IMO and you can send the knive in to be resharpened. If you have a tendency to lose knives, then don't bother with a Benchmade because they are not cheap. Kilgore” 9:37:55 PM 1/14/06 “Check out some Cold Steel knives online at coldsteel.com I sell these knives and for the money they are top ranked, easy to sharpen, and hold an edge like all getout.” 9:43:47 PM 1/14/06 “I need to sharpen mine soon. any suggestions?” 9:44:54 PM 1/14/06 “use ceramic rods on a wooden block that puts them at a V angle. I find these are easiest to use and get your knife razor sharp. All you do is cut the blade straight down on the rods like your slicing cheese and the V is the perfect angle for the edge. last edited: 1/14/06 9:48:02 PM” 9:46:47 PM 1/14/06 “ok i know this might be a silly question but, is it possible to over use your knife? i use it almost every day. mostly to cut ropes and leather (most tided dogs i foind are tied with these)” 9:50:01 PM 1/14/06 “If you 'overuse' a knife you just keep sharpening it till the blade is used up, kinda like a sliver of metal, but that would take A LOT OF USE. Like any tool, you use it till it's used up.” 9:57:48 PM 1/14/06 “cool. I do love my knife!” 10:03:13 PM 1/14/06 “you think i should get 2 knives or one and what do you feel about folding vrs fixed” 11:06:01 PM 1/14/06 Folding vs Fixed Blade Knives “Personally, I usually carry both when I am BPing. A full-tang fixed blade can be had fairly inexpensively. They are nice to have for most stuff, but a folding knife is also nice. My fixed blade is attached to my pack and generally stays with it. My folding knife stays in my pocket always. Kilgore” 11:12:57 PM 1/14/06 “folding. easy to carry and mine hooks on my belt.” 11:16:00 PM 1/14/06 “Is it the kind that locks open?” 11:17:23 PM 1/14/06 “yes i have to push this thing that is in the middle. LOL i am such a warrior” 11:20:12 PM 1/14/06 “but i will tell you one thing, it comes in handy if you lock yourself out of your truck. and you need to unscrew a window that goes into the cab. it works as a screw driver. not that i have ever tested that before ya know :D” 11:34:05 PM 1/14/06 Kilgore “I'm the same way, I carry two, a swiss army knife with all the gadgets, and a "buster" Cold Steel "Recon Scout" bulletproof, rockcrusher to chop down forests and build shelters with. LOL. last edited: 1/15/06 6:24:12 AM” 6:18:31 AM 1/15/06 “Out of context quote alert! See first entry.” 6:54:12 AM 1/15/06 “??????????????????????what that, nimble??” 6:55:52 AM 1/15/06 “"I think I may need something a little bigger than 2 inches..." Still though, he's twice as huge as One Inch Wang, lol” 6:57:18 AM 1/15/06 “hey, two inches can do a lot of damage........” 6:59:07 AM 1/15/06 “I will second the recommendation for cold steel brand. I have their "master hunter" knife and have for about 8 or so years now. Its still holds an amazing edge ( I have field dressed 2 deer plus skinned em back to back without the need to sharpen, that includes cutting the breast plate and pelvis). Gerber makes good blades as does kershaw. A locking blade will work in a survival situation but really a bigger full tang knife is better for survival in that you can use it for heavy chopping and grunt work that would bust a pocket knife.” 7:38:03 AM 1/15/06 “either a fixed blade or a locking blade. either way find a knife that you can use with either hand, while opening it or closing. also something important is the blade design, many different types of designs are out there, find the one that works best in most of the types of uses you will be needing. go with a benchmade and you will be getting a good knife for your investment. they have several types that fit your needs.” 10:31:57 AM 1/15/06 “If you can not find a knife on your own should you be taking a survival class? :p” 10:38:42 AM 1/15/06 “YES” 12:41:07 PM 1/15/06 “if you take a survival course you would not need to "find a knife", you would be required to fashion one out of bone, stone, wood or whatever.” 1:26:01 PM 1/15/06 “I get to have a knife and i know what i like and what i use, i like small pocket knive i have several gerbers but i was wondering if anyone has done anything like this before. And if they like a big knife for cutting wood or if there really isn't a big need for that and just a small knife like i already have is good. And all of you have a knife so this way i get to see what you have and why you like it with out having to buy everthing” 11:53:44 PM 1/15/06 “You will need two knives. The one you use for survival is not want you want around ropes. Knives used during rescue are shaped differently and designed to specifically cut rope and webbing, usually with little risk of injuring the person you may be rescuing. Most rope rescue programs will teach you that you NEVER take a knife out during rope rescue unless you are certain what you are doing. We always had a rule that it took three people to authorize a knife pulled. A very dear friend fell to his death when he pulled his knife out during a training (not with our team) and cut the wrong line. It happens. last edited: 1/16/06 12:05:24 AM” 12:02:09 AM 1/16/06 “ditto on what mtnsteve says.....the popular rescue knife has what is called a 'sheepsfoot' blade where the point is rounded to slip under clothing and cut the material without cutting the person. Buck also has a couple models that have carabiner clips on them. Just do a search online of brands: Cold Steel, Gerber, Buck, etc. and then go to Academy, WalMart, etc. to get one in your hand and feel of it to see if it's what you might want. last edited: 1/16/06 7:19:32 AM” 7:16:47 AM 1/16/06
