We give Dude with out of MFGR warranty busted snowshoes a new pair for a loss of maybe $100. He now plans to spend 10X that amount and proceeds to be an REI apostle and spreads favorable opinion to other would be buyers.

We blow sunshine up cranky guys aZZ (if he really called at all) and promise to "check into" a situation that "concerns us" He gets a warm fuzzy, his existance is validated and he shuts the F up and gets off the line. Maybe he'll spend some more cash, maybe not but the buzz generated by his yapping spills onto two backpacking forums.

Net result: Increase in sales and positive press outweighs $100 snowshoe loss - Win/win for REI.”

Yeah. They'd never put words in print expecting the other party to read them. They'd just spread nasty rumors behind the other's back and deny it if word ever got back (remember... I live with a houseful of your type).

Yep. IMHO it all points to one person. Read through everything he says about himself and what the others say about him (if you have the time---good Lord!) and notice the manner of speaking/writing. I'm pretty sure I know who it is. VERY closely resembles someone here.”

“Dan McHale is really a pretty cool guy. I talked to him on the phone when I ordered my pack. I doubt there is anyone that has so much knowledge about pack design than he does. He holds a few patents on some of his ideas.”
