The meeting location will be Amicalola Falls State Park on the morning of March 1st. We will try to yogi a ride up to the top of Springer. This is a detail that should be worked out ahead of time. This is why its important you RSVP early so everyone can get a seat. Hike on the Appalachian Trail until March 6th where we will catch a ride back to our cars from Hiawassee, GA. Total hiking mileage should be around 80 miles over rough terrain.

For further info the trip is listed in the trips section. (march 1st)

the road up to the .9 mile mark is passable by passenger car, as far as i know, just takes awhile. why not drive there? or start hiking at amicalola. one less ride to have to hitch

Hike Your Own Hike, but this seems like a bad idea to me. The mountain will be overrun with AT thruhikers as it is.
Save some shelter and tent spaces for them.

This section is way prettier in the fall.

Not to mention less populated.

Thanks Crash Bang for the info on fire road.

StoveStomper - yes, I know it will be busy. The point of this trail at least for me is to talk to the newbies. Hike with them a little bit, get to know them.

i have to admit i did not drive to the .9 mile mark, i drove to the 4 mile mark, and had no problem. i know that stove drove to the .9 mark a few years ago, i think he said it would have been passable by passenger car. i also drove to cheese factory campsite last year with no problem. georgia forest service roads seem to be pretty good

wish i could go with ya, hooker. but my vacation time is already set for the grand canyon, a few days after you start the georgia thing

park at Hiker Hostel and have Profile/Almanac shuttle you up to Springer and back from Hiawassee - costs money but great service http://www.hikerhostel.com/

Captain Hook - I drove my Honda Civic up FS 42 to Springer (the 0.9 mark) for New Year's Eve - it was no problem at all - better this year than last year

I thought Crash Bang sounded familiar- I hiked Fontana to Damascus in 04, I think you were ahead of me. I knew folks like Java, Blue, T, Don't Mind, Don't Matter, Mr. T, Flint...
I'm only a lowly section hiker but I have withdrawl too!
