Jill Carroll, a journalist who is captive in Iraq, previously wrote this about a friend in Iraq.

The only thing we can say now is at least she died doing what she wanted, doing what she really, really believed in. If she were still here, she'd be most worried now about her driver's family and who will take care of all the other Iraqi families she was working with.

Very similar to her predicament. http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/01/17/iraq.journalist/index.html

Let's pray she makes it out unharmed.

koreans
back a couple of years ago some Korean aid workers were kidnapped.

They were threatened with death unless Korea withdrew its 3000 troops (mostly on the ground in logistical support capacities).

I always thought, and think to this day, that the Koreans should have doubled up.

They should have gathered 3000 hardened combat troops off the frontlines of the DMZ and gone house to house with them looking for their folks.

I gotta agree, Mutt.

Risk of escalation, of civilian casualties and the consequent rise in anger and feeling the need for retribution by civilians.......

Reports are starting to leak that she has been executed by her captors in video. I have no doubt that we will blame Bush, the US and ourselves rather than the animals who kill women in cold blood.

U.S. Military Releases Iraqi Women By SAMEER N. YACOUB, Associated Press Writer
30 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military released five Iraqi women detainees Thursday, a move demanded by the kidnappers of an American reporter to spare her life, but an official said the release was coincidental.

The women were freed from U.S. custody and delivered to the home of a senior Sunni Arab politician in Baghdad, where they were returned to their families, according to an Associated Press photographer at the scene. They were later driven away in taxis.

Armed men who abducted Jill Carroll on Jan. 7 in Baghdad have threatened to kill the freelance reporter for the Christian Science Monitor unless all Iraqi women prisoners were freed.

David Cook, the Washington bureau chief for The Christian Science Monitor, said: "We've seen the reports. We're waiting to see if there are hopeful developments in Iraq."

He declined further comment.

The U.S. military announced earlier that the women would be freed as part of a group of about 420 Iraqis to be released Thursday and Friday from military custody after reviews of their cases determined there was no reason to detain them further.

The military had confirmed it was holding nine Iraqi women. The fate of the remaining four was not immediately clear. Another two women were detained Wednesday in the northern city of Mosul for alleged insurgent activities, the military said Thursday....

If this wasn't already such a sad situation.

Sarge --

we negotiate with terrorists every day of the week. Every administration. Every NSA every CIA.

It is a simple fact. It is a politically neutral fact.

In ANY hostage situation you must open up SOME dialogue between the two parties. Whether the dialogue takes place directly, or through intermediaries or even through the media.

I am making a truly non-partisan statment when I say you are absolutely naive if you don't think the release of the Iraqui women hostages were directly related to the capture of Jill Carroll.

I will make a slightly more partisan statement (although I think it would hold true for any administration trying to prosecute this war) that the Bush administration can't afford to have Jill Carroll represent another failure in the media . .. and I would further argue that her captors Can't afford to kill her because of the bad press they would get.

The easiest solution is to have some arguably disconnected releases of women iraqi prisoners.

Not 100 % releases . . but releases that can be justified as not negoiating while allowing the captors to get a portion what they want.

You can't really believe that the release was random???? or just about to happen anyway??? can you??

Dont recall where jsut read it (today) about the US meeting with sunni insurgent/terrorist leadership in the Anbar province of Iraq and I think Jordan. We do negotiate with terrorists. Maybe not exactly how they'd like but we do meet and we do discuss their demands. Didnt Carter agree to allow the americans in Iran to be held till Ron was sworn in. My history is touchy for that time being 8 and all..

I meant
I meant my comments in the context of Birch's.

There is always some dialogue, at some level, going on. There has be some channels to communicate with folks, no matter how disagreeable.

I don't believe that identifying the 6 (9?) women prisoners we hold, and determining whether they were appropriate for release would take more then 1/2 day if the call came from the right office.

Sarge

ewker, that looks about right.

I never mentioned compromising (though we do at times) but we are negotiating and in that process we will inevitably soften our stance in some areas and not in others. That is the nature of any negotiation, if it werent, and we refused to alter our stance there really wouldnt be a point in even talking.

I dont see compromise as a weakness. I see it as a process of prioritizing and refining ones stance. This can actually strengthen ones side by getting down to the root or base issues.

That all being said. I hope that some friendlies are able to find Ms carroll and are able to expedite the trip to allah for those who took her.

Not true. Some people need extra help to understand their options. Anyways, the negotiations are not just between us and the insurgents. That's an oversimplification of the purpose and a mischaracterization of the talks which has led to your misunderestimating our strategic plan.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - American reporter Jill Carroll was set free Thursday, nearly three months after she was kidnapped in a bloody ambush that killed her translator. She said she had been treated well.

Carroll, 28, was dropped off near offices of the Iraqi Islamic Party. She walked inside, and people there called American officials, Iraqi police said.

"I was treated well, but I don't know why I was kidnapped," Carroll said in a brief interview on Baghdad television.

Her family thanked "the generous people around the world who worked officially or unofficially" to gain her freedom. Her father, Jim, told CNN he was asleep in his North Carolina home when the phone rang at about 6 a.m.

"Hi, Dad. This is Jill. I'm released," the voice on the other end said.

No details were given about the circumstances surrounding her release. The U.S. ambassador said there was no ransom paid by the American embassy, but his remarks left open the question of whether "arrangements" were made by others.
