what is your favorite piece of equipment you take on the trail. (by obvious i mean things you couldn't leave the house w/o i.e. pack, food, shelter, etc.)

for me personally it would be my fishing pole.

My frisbee. It makes a great bellows for starting fires, an excellant little side table for drinks, etc, that need a level surface. I've served smores on it and of course, played loads of frisbee with it. I think a dog or two have drank out of it too. I prefer the aerobie superdisc model that's smaller in diameter.

A bandana and it doesn't matter if it's a day hike or overnight. I always bring one.

sass beat me to it...i love my frisbee for all the same reasons...i also use mine for a plate...it's also good for clearing snow to set up your tent or for holding small things

another would be a good book or a newspaper/magazine...i'm not much of a reader but do like to read a little on the trail

binoculars are nice too

My thermarest chair thingy and my blue fleece sweater hoodie.

Oops is that two?

Oh and the scotch/or wine is NOT extra, it's a necessity. I'm on vacation for cripes sakes.

LMAO @ dhutch!

I agree, embear...trying to sleep w/out a pillow sucks! A wadded-up something else doesn't cut it.

Scotch is not equipment. It is a necessity of life, complement to meals and friends, lubricator for vocal chords, elixir for the soul, perfect nightcap, and damned fine too.

Ouch! LOL

I'd have to say my thermarest chair. There is nothing like back support after a long day of hiking! I also like the little inflatable "water wing" that I use as a pillow. My camera is a must! A full flask is nice. I'm by no means a lightweight backpacker!
