BEING OFFENDED
A comment from another thread brought this up. This is sorta strange, but is there anyone else out there who doesn't experience the "feeling" of being offended?

I cannot recall ever actually feeling "offended" in my adult life. I can relate to it, because as a kid I've experienced it, but not in at least 20 years. It's like feeling upset because somebody else verbally rejects something about you. Right?

Is that strange? Anybody else relate to that? I feel like I'm missing a gene or something.

The "feeling" of being offended?

Is that anything like feeling pissed off?

i only get offended by people that i love or by people who i really really value their opinion which is few and far between...one of my biggest pet peeves at work is when people let their emotions get involved with work

hpm - That's what I don't really get. Do people actually "feel offended"? How do you "get offended"?

How do you know if you are offended?

What does that really mean, to take offense? Does it mean you have been violated in some way because of something somebody said? How do you feel violated?

I really don't get it. I can see feeling bad about something somebody says about you, like your nose is too big or something. But is that being "offended"? And I can't for the life of me attach any type of "feeling" to if somebody says something about one of your beliefs/postitions, etc. Like if somebody says "conservatives are dumb". Should I feel differently then? Should that be upsetting somehow, and if it is, is that being "offended"?

I picture in my mind sort of an "internal being taken aback" when thinking about what it means to be offended, but don't think I've actually experienced it.

chappy asked about offensive odors. Sure, a burp can smell bad, but do you feel differently than if you smelled a rotten egg that you just happened upon?

Offense to me is anything (edit) purposefully done (/edit) that causes me to have a negative reaction.

So yeah if you get kicked in the nuts I'm guessing you will feel pretty damn offended.

ahhhh ... it couldn't be the welfare state that was created. -- got it.

government should stay out of military action and focus on regulation and welfare -- got it.

... Just like our founding fathers envisioned.

(Not the ones that wrote the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE - I'm talking about Soros and the like)

More conservative comedy -

Iraq not going badly - It's the media.
You're not badly off - it's the media
Gas isn't expensive - it's the media
There are no forclosures going on - it's the media.
Food prices aren't going up - it's the media
There's no credit crunch - it's the media
No healthcare problem - it's the media.
People don't like Obama - it's the media
McCain isn't old - it's the media.
Don't trust your own experience - you've been listening to the media.

I guess you don't have to bother with facts, evidence or searching your views - hear anything you don't like - blame the media.

It's the go-to excuse for the conservative of today.

Is there nothing that can't be explained by the meedja????

Wall Street Week offers some pretty extreme spin there and a major bit of elitism: "the average person has no idea of what's going on, the idiots don't know how good they have it."

It's not just the Iraq War, its 4 dollar a gallon gas, its record trade deficits even as the dollar falls, its a dollar that has sunk in comparison to almost every currency, budget surplus turned into deficits, the mortgage crisis, an economy which has not done nearly what one would expect given a hugely stimulutory economic policy (war, budget deficits and tax cuts), and the disappearance of many middle income blue collar jobs. I think its also the sense that
our economic might relative to many other nations has dwindled.

I can't imagine that we will be facing a great depression any time soon, but there are rough waters and tough changes ahead.

What the hell was that?   The ghost of Louis Rukeyser?

I came across a classic the other day....

            "Sire, the peasants are revolting!"

"You said it. They stink on ice."

                    – Count de Monet & King Louis XVI
                        (Harvey Korman & Mel Brooks)
History of the World Part I   (1981)
