Black closed cell foam for insulating boiler pipes. Available at heatring/cooling shops. 1/4-1" thicknesses. Works miracles. Non, I have some if you need it.

Oooh! Might have to try that, birch! That's something along the lines of what I was thinking---among other things.

Make sure you pee in your Nalgene at least once every 2 hours to keep the liquid temperature well above freezing. Add large doses of Tang® to mask the acidic urine taste.

Luckily my water wasn't all frozen, so i'd warm that up, pour it in his bottle, thaw a little, pour it out, start again.

I now always heat my water bottles before bed and through them in my bag during winter trips. did it once and I will never stop. They stay very warm, all night long.

during the day or when they are loose for extended periods, and when I am hiking, I store them upside down so when/if the water in them starts to freeze it does so from the bottom and not from the top. That way I can always get the lid open.

Heck yeah, and nowadays I'm armed with a digital camera - I end up takin' more pictures and I don't sit on the film canisters like I did at Sipsey.:)

Lookin' forward to seein' everybody.

Last year I woke up in the middle of the night and got a drink. The bottle was almost frozen so I stuck it in my sleeping bag by my knees.

I had a dream that my foot was being crushed. I tossed around and realized my bare foot was snuggled against that block of ice. It was so cold it hurt.

Funny, Buck! Actually, you raise an important point: what do you do when your pee bottle freezes and you can't empty it the next day? Anticipating this problem last weekend, I was able to dig a hole in the snow/ice floor of my sunken vestibule and pour it out before it froze. Covering the hole with snow kept odors away.

Well, that certainly was a thread killer!

There are a lot of things worse than getting up at night and taking a leak. Dealing with a bottle of urine is one of them.

Depends on how cold it is.

At what temperature is it too cold to go outside and pee?

...and do you only use your pee bottle when it gets below that temperature?

Pee in a whiskey bottle? Heavens to Murgatroid.

When it get down to -15*F or -20*F or less, once I get inside my sleeping bag, I don't want to loose any of the heat trapped inside. Above that, I don't use a pee bottle.

As an interesting sidenote.......
80 proof vodka will freeze at approximately -26.95C or -16.51F. 100 proof vodka will freeze at approximately -40.43C or -40.78F

If there's snow on the ground, it's cold enough to implement the pee bottle technique, IMHO.....

I remember when I was a wee little newbie on this site, and couldn't for the life of me figure out if a "pee bottle" was what it sounded like...and if so, why anyone would want to save their pee in a bottle. Ahhh the good old days!

One thing to note. Always use a different shaped bottle for your pee bottle than your water bottle. That way you can tell the difference even in the dark.

Hey, bit. Want to play a game? It's called, "Is it Tang or is it Pee." You get to take the first sip.

Well, I dunno about yours, but my pee smells so bad, it's a no-brainer.

From now on I'm just gonna use a catheter, and run the hose outside my tent. No more pee bottle for me!

If you are talking about while you are camped in the snow, you can put it in the snow, in a hole in the snow covered by a snow block cap, and put it upside down. The ice will form on the top and work its way down, so if the threads are on teh bottom, they'll be the last part to freeze. In the snow its not likely to freeze at all.

No pee bottle for me. Wouldn't want THAT to leak. I'll get up, as I am a very light sleeper. I like the dark & my night vision isn't usually hindered by a campfire, since I don't make one.(except in extreme cold) Besides peeing outside around the tent helps keep (sniffing) critters away. You're "marking" your territory.

Personally I hate getting up at night to pee. It's all dark, and you have to put your boots on and all that bother. If I were a guy, I'd use a pee bottle when it was 75 degrees out.

My plan: Boil water before bed, fill nalgene, close it tight and chuck it in the footbox of my sleeping bag. Keeps the feet toasty and you'll have warm water in the morning.
