Feeding Trent Lott Lobby Reform
If you are an average worker in Mississippi, in 2004 you made $24,650. That equates to a little over $11 an hour before taxes assuming you work no overtime. Republican Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi is insulted by lobby reform suggested by Democrats limiting meals paid for by lobbyist to $20. Trent Lott's response was, "Where can you eat for $20 McDonalds?" Suppose Mr. Lott if one of your average residents of Mississippi were to ask you to dinner, to discuss his hurricane damage. He would certainly have to work for 1.7 hours for your $20 meal. Over 21% of his daily wages before paying his taxes just to cover a meal, which when offered would insult you. Mr. Lott you have certainly lost touch with those you represent.

I hope you know you have just started another bash Stupid Mississippi Rednecks thread. The haters will come out in droves.

Lott will have another easy reelection because Mississippi likes the guy. That includes quite a lot of Black folks too.

I'm out of this thread.

An alligator could get a meal for less than $20 if we let Trent take a swim before lunch.

What seems to be bothering Lott is he may haver to pay for his own lunches.

Now there's a concept.

I don’t know about anyone else but the very idea that rich politicians are being fed (any percentage) by our tax dollars makes me ill.

I don't mind feeding them, but paper-training them is the worst!

I do a lot of work with public agencies. Some are corrupt and some are surprisingly clean and efficient. The clean ones have very strict rules about accepting gifts. They can’t let contractors take them out to lunch or accept anything of value.

The need for huge sums of money in today’s political campaigns is a guarantee of corruption. We are not their constituents, their source of money is.

I can accept that it takes a lot of money to maintain a home in DC and one ‘back home’. DC is an expensive place to live.

How about we pay our public servants enough to live well and prohibit them from taking anything of value from a lobbyist or anyone else? Seems this would go a long way toward cleaning up the mess that has been made of our system.

James Carville and Paul Begala have come up with a plan that goes even further – they would prohibit incumbents from accepting campaign contributions but free challengers to accept any amount from anyone as long as its reported. Taxpayer’s money would go to incumbents to match the challenger’s haul. I think it’s an interesting proposal.

What about freedom of speach? I should be able to contribute money to politicians I support.

Violin I'm thinking we should provide free dorm style housing for congress in DC. Something on the lines of Bachelor Officer Quarters provided to military officers. I lived in BOQ while in the military and many were really nice. Also an on site cafeteria with a meal plan could be provided. Some meals that can be bought for $20 bucks or less. Then maybe common people could afford to hold office in Washington D.C. without the need for lobbyist dollars.

You do this every single time a thread comes out that mentions the city of New York or any other place you find distasteful. You gotta be able to take if you want to dish it out as much as you do. Which is ok, if you want to be truthful and put yourself in that "hater" category...
