I need a raft.

So far my block hasn't been compleatly flooded but if this keeps up, it won't be long. So far I can get out.

had to empty my rain gage as it was over flowering...again (it holds 6 inches of rain) I emptied it yesterday morning so we've had 6 inches since then, and its still raining. We have almost 5 inches a few days ago. 4 inches a few days before that. Drove past the marsh next to my neighbors....its way flooded, soon it will be to the road out, my only road out. I bet the river is mega high too...I didn't drive down that far. maybe it will be covering the road and I won't be able to get to work :)

We are now an island. I've tired every way possible to get out of here, so that I c an get to work in hammond. Nope Nope Nope. Burn's ditch has taken over the road, the bridge and all the fields. I can't get to 6, I can't get to 80/94, I can't get to I-65. I can't get to 20 and I can't get to the toll. Its looking iffy to even leave the neighborhood now. They had emergency vehicles in here taking a look, to see if they needed to evacuate people. Towards swansom road they have been evacuating. I tried to get to home depot for supples but they were letting people out of that area and not in. So we are stuck.

All of NW Indiana is under water this evening. We have received more than 25 inches on rain in the past 3 days. Major highways are under water. Our town has has more than 75% of the homes flooded and the little calumet river broke thru in Munster flooding half the town.

WK, I was worried about you. They said that highland had been evacuated due to a levy break.

The lake george dam broke earlier and they had to rescue folks by boat from a trailor park near it.

My neighbors cars have water to their dashboards. I was lucky as my car is on a bit of higher ground. I hope I can get out tomorrow...if the rain stops for good maybe some of the roads will be passable by then.

Region rainfall exceeds Houston

September 15, 2008Recommend (2)

By Piet Levy Post-Tribune staff writer

While all eyes were on Houston this weekend, lying directly in the path of Hurricane Ike, it was Northwest Indiana that received the most rain fall.
As of press time, the highest inch count from the weekend storms was in Lakes of The Four Seasons -- a whopping 10.48 inches as of 1 p.m. Sunday.

Houston, on the other hand, had a weekend high of just 1.63 inches, recorded Saturday after Ike had rolled in.

"We definitely had more than Houston," said Charles Mott, meteorologist for the National Weather Service branch based in Romeoville, Ill. "How does that make you feel?"

For many, they felt outrage. Merrillville resident Rosalind Thurston, of the Innsbrook subdivision, said her parlor room sounded "like Niagra Falls," with water flowing into the home from the front and the back, due to the home's unique placement at a "T" intersection.

But while Lakes of the Four Seasons had the highest inch count, a spokesperson at the gated community's security office said there was no flood damage or evacuations Sunday.

In Porter County, Valparaiso was recorded as having the highest rain fall inch count Sunday -- 8.9 inches as of 2:20 p.m. -- Mott said.

So how did so much rain cause so much damage here, while Houston remained relatively dry?

Mott explained that Houston only had to deal with rainfall from Ike.

But Northwest Indiana first had heavy rain courtesy of Tropical Storm Lowell, which came off the Pacific Northwest, followed by rainfall from Ike and another cold front.

Until about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, "That all lead to steady rain that never stopped," Mott said, causing the rivers to "rise big time."

And from that, came a lot of the flooding troubles in the region -- including in Lake Station near Deep River, where Police Chief Mike Stills said the town was ravaged with the highest floodwater he had ever seen.

I can attest to that last paragraph!!! I can't even get out of lake station. The river has taken over everything. I'm hoping I can make it out today. I hate feeling trapped.

Either we just had an F0 pass by or an downburst. Whipping high winds in all directions, incredible hail, then sheets of rain, and now it's close to freezing cold and the clouds are just flying away very fast. It's clear and sunny now. Awesome!

I forgot to mention the magnificent rainbow that occurred after this freak weather thing. It was very intense. The air afterwards smelled and felt very different, too. Must be something about the high elevation air.

The snow is melting fast. By work, all that is left are some dirty snowbanks. It looks like the peaks are holding onto some snow, but I have no idea what the snow is like. ie is it rotten snow? The good news is temps are going to be in the 20s and 30s today and get colder by the weekend.

We're at 65 degrees right now, and it keeps getting warmer. We have long, angry red whip lines of storm still coming at us, too, then followed by cold, down to around 29 degrees or so. All this rain, followed by a freeze...HPM may need to stay home tomorrow because of icy conditions. Darn. ;)

Of course, Laurel already has tomorrow off from school. Teacher planning/ potential snow or ice day.
